MO:R5 Thoy Bradley vs George G "Un-leaded Zeppelin"
This is my entry for Round 5 of the Mocolympics. Category: Mash-ups!
About this creation
"Unleaded Zeppelin"

Okay, so for round 5 of the MOColympics I have been pitted against the last standing TFOL, George G. George is fairly well known across the pages and made a statement or few with his very popular mocs ' Single Pane Starwars Funnies'.

Well this category, Mash-up, is perhaps my hardest category yet to compete in. Quantity of bricks doesn't help you here, quantity of Lego theme is what you need. So lets have a look at the themed sets I own: Kingdoms, Atlantis, Prince of Persia, Pirates, Pirates of the Carribean.

So what mash-ups can i make? Pirates of Atlantis basically means Atlantis. Pirates and Kingdoms, well thats a boring mash-up. Prince of Persia and Atlantis, sounds like Atlantis again... Then I thought, Pirates of Persia! Sounds boring eh? The theme works and it even has a good background discription.
So the theme is set in Persia and the Pirates are after Gold, Black Gold! In the desert there is no water to sail ships. So in the air they have to be. Prepare for the unveiling of my proposed set "Un-leaded Zeppelin".

Ideally the ballon would be made from 5L axles and #3 Technic Elbows, with a material wrap for the covering. This would make the baloon much lighter and perhaps even make the ship Swooshable!

4th wall commentary: As said, this category has been a challenge for ideas. Considering the 'vast' range of mash-ups to choose from (note the sarcasm), I think this turned out really well. There are a few other ideas for sets in this theme, such as Oil Drilling Yard, Mini Pirate Blimp, Anti-Aircraft Cannon Base, Blimp Loading Dock, Oil Tanker Hi-jack. I'm sure there are a few more that could be thought up. Due to the category i'm not overly confident with this entry, at one point the air baloon part fell off and crushed the ship, this made me temporarily question my build and tempted me to start over from scratch. Once the baloon was put in place the model was actually quite stable :) Good Luck to George and thankyou to all my supporters! ~Thoy

Quoting Sebeus I WOW, that's pretty awesome :p I love the big balloon, you should definitely get more into pirate ship building, I'd love to see an elegant galleon from you, or maybe you're more into the real warships such as frigates and ship-of-the-line's ;)
Cheers Man! I would like to make a few more ships, I think I'd rather work at a real minifig scale hull rather than the 16wide Lego hulls. I'm still working on a custom hull design in my head :)

Very nice mash-up and great idea. I would maybe prefer seeing a bigger balloon above the ship with a more specific shape. Wonderful idea anyway.

Quoting Gabriel Thomson Ah, such a shame you got knocked out! Certainly you can hold yr head high though, with 5 excellent rounds under your belt. :) Now we can both cheer on Leda i guess, hey?
Yea man, but hey that's the way the game goes. I'd love to see Leda win, she could use that bridge :) Makes a far bigger difference to her collection than it would to mine. I'd also like to see her have to take on George in the final :D

Quoting Mr. Xenomurphy Judging is not getting easier from round to round, Thoy, especially not when I have to deal with so many fantastic creations. Your amazing zeppelin ship reminds me instantly of the brilliant movie "Stardust". And though I really like the pattern on your ballon, the general mix of colours, the shape of the ship with all the little balconies (just to name some of the things I like), my vote goes to your opponent this time.
Your right, I don't understand why your comment was moderated either... About the vote, as much as it pains me you made the right choice. George received my vote from when he uploaded.

Quoting Matt David Well Thoy, I went back and forth with this one. Your ship is amazing. It's unique in every aspect. Unfortunately i had to give my vote to your opponent. Thanks for sharing this amazing creation with us.
Thanks Matt, though I must point out that when you write two separate things on two different creations for judging it does not come across as consistent, the reason for giving a vote should always be noted on both models, this is consistent judging. I do agree with your decision to give George the vote, his build was phenomenal and fully deserved the win :) Thanks for the compliments too, Thoy

Quoting Dave Kaleta Mr. Bradley, You build is quite beautiful. I don't fault you in the slightest as to the themes you chose or the bricks. The engineering alone is outstanding. This is a difficult match-up to judge, really it comes down to personal preference for me; I'd rather be playing with your opponent's build (for me, the hallmark of a great set), so he earns my vote. Thank you for sharing your take on the category. ~Dave
Dave, I applaud you for simply saying "I like this one more", that kind of honesty is what is needed sometimes when you can't split two builds from each other. Fantastic consistent judging across both our Mocs. Thanks :)

Quoting George G. I knew the results would be close but I thought they would swing your way at the end! I hope we can be chums though, maybe join forces in the MOCAthalon!
Mate, I knew you had this round from the moment you uploaded. Your model was far better explained and the colours much more eye-catching and vibrant, i'm pretty sure all those who said this would be close were just trying to let me down easy LOL. You had a great build and fully deserve this win. Go forth and conquer!

Really cool zeppelin you got here. I am a big Led Zeppelin fan. I really liked the colors you used to make it look more persian, but the theme seems basically the same as steampunk. There are some things that set it apart though, such as the colors, the use of Potc figs, and the pirate details like rum and swords. Nevertheless, this is still a great moc. I especially like the hull design and the captains cabin. Good luck!

Quoting El Barto ! No theme bias whatsoever, Dude. And I'm a huge Led Zeppelin fan, too! I just preferred the contrast he created between two very different themes. To my eye, it has more to do with the parts and color variations, and the blending of specific recognizable Lego sets. But it's still early, lots of judges to go!
That does me just fine :) Seeing as the only clashing theme I own is in overpowering colours this category was never going to be friendly to me.

Quoting Tom Simon That looks pretty good to me Thoy. In the last pic, is the balloon propped against your chest (I'm assuming that's you), or are you supporting the whole thing with your hands only? And what is the illusion commented on? I'm not seeing what you mean.
Yea its leaning on me, the balloon made it very top heavey. The 4th pic down gives the illusion that the hull bubbles outwards about 16-20 studs from the bottom of the pic. The 3rd to last pic makes it appear that the balloon is much further forward in front of the hull than it actually is, kinda makes the hull look like its only 12 studs wide. Thanks :)

Quoting Stuart Lucas Woo, this is a beautiful build and the theme certainly works for me! Whether or not you progress I hope you don't have to dismantle this any time soon. The PoP dark tan colours and curves work really well for a sailing ship style build. This one really is too close to call!
Lol its been taken down already, well mostly. In the chance that I do get through I like having the collection organised before the next round starts, gives me less time breaking and more time building :) Thanks

Quoting Chris Phipson Both of your theme mash ups were right on target! Concept alone wasn't going to be enough to win this round so it comes down to build. While George has an astounding entry, I think on the build side you got him. You have my vote! Good luck with the other judges! ~ Chris.
Thanks Chris, when George uploaded his entry I knew this would be close, his build really is a step up from his previous entries.

Quoting El Barto ! This is a massive build, Dude! Looks great with all the details around the ship, but I especially like that balloon. But I'm sorry to say my vote goes to your opponent. Good luck with the other judges, I know it will be a close one!
I read your comment on George's entry, not sure if your implying that my theme mash-up was not as much a mash-up as George's based on the themes used, would you mind explaining a bit further as I think the two influences in my build are very obvious. I don't mind your vote going to George, I agree he put up a really great entry and its got me on edge, your reason just seems a bit based on theme favouritism, which depends entirely on ones collection make-up.

Quoting Deus Otiosus Magnificent zeppeling, but the baloon doesn't seem to have the apropriate shape...
I agree, but that the best my bricks would allow. Ideally the balloon would be 1.5*width of ship and 1.5*length of ship, it would also prefer a more parabolic like curve at the ends. (Built out of bricks man that would be heavy! LOL)
