The Black Pearl, the Queen Anne's Revenge, and the Flying Dutchman
About this creation
Remember those first ships we all built? The square, chunky ones that couldn't possibly float in real life? Cos let's face it, everyone who ever owned a Lego set owned at least one pirate set.
But not necessarily a pirate ship. Those big fellas with sails and all were too expensive. And the natural order of things states that, when one builds ships and watches Pirates of the Caribbean, the two shall come together...

The Black Pearl! I worked hard on this one, as the Pearl has a very distinctively shaped bow and cabin. (I actually did this last of the three, to get an idea for scale).

The Queen Anne's Revenge. I'm pretty sure the real thing never looked like it did in On Stranger Tides, but it was still a challenge to replicate scale and majesty of Blackbeard's vessel...

And finally, the Flying Dutchman, ghostly vessel of Davy Jones (I LOVE that minifigure). The colours on this one were a challenge as I didn't have much dark tan and I didn't want to make it all grey... but if there's one model where you can get away with a mix of shades, then this is it.

I had so much fun creating these that I can see myself returning to the pirates theme very soon... oh, it brings back those memories - Captain Redbeard, King Kahuka... the Black Swan and Jack Peppermint... indulge me rambling. All will be revealed :-)

Great work, Grey man! Making mini versions of the ships was a great idea, I love the mini dutchman! In case you forgot, your entry for The Great Hobbit Contest is due in 12 days.
I had forgotten... I might have to drop out of the contest as I've no chance of finishing it by then... exams :-( |
