A mighty and evil toa of Iodine responsible for the deaths of the Air and Ice Lords of Korrothis. He is now banished to the Pit, but after the breakout... Find him. Quickly!
About this creation
Name: Varrix Gender: Male Race/Species: De-Matoran (G1) Occupation:Servant of Korrothis, Pit Prisoner Title(s):Toa, Archon Prevailing Element: Iodine (Air) Alignment: Neutral Evil Affiliation: Himself (Although supposedly Kalmah) Typical Tool(s): Halogen Jets, Dire Mace, Tank Shields, Mask of Charisma MOC Status: Disassembled
Varrix was chosen and given periodic elemental powers by Lord Reglas using the Soulforge in Korrothis. His element is Iodine, a heavy purple gas that sublimes difectly into black crystals, with no liquid phase. The gas is toxic, deadly, and highly reactive. He had come from a home island which was later overtaken by the Brotherhood of Makuta under Teridax.
When his home island was overtaken, Varrix was not allowed to go to fight and save it, being sent to a critical deal in Xia instead which needed his abilities and mask (to assist in negotiations). The toa that were there failed. This made him resentful of his master, the airlord Maelestrakk, and gradually Varrix plotted against him.
Varrix was good friends with the Icelord, Azmyrus, who had been the turaga of his old village and felt a similar loss. Varrix and Azmyrus supported one another in their grief... and secretly agreed to plot against him. Varrix was the driving force on the old man, eventually manipulating him to kill Maelestrakk in cold blood before commiting suicide. Varrix wasn't suspected, and in fact the entire plot went without a hitch. After the two lords died, a double Tempesta Magna wracked the Matoran Universe as the Air and Ice elements went haywire. Matoran died in the hundreds.
When Gringat and Xalos restored the Weave and were installed as the new Air and Ice lords, Varrix entered Gringat's service along with the other five archons of Air. He was a faithful archon - that is until Ia, using her Iden, encountered the spirit of Azmyrus still haunting Korrothis after his suicide. Varrix was discovered, trialed and swiftly sent to The Pit.
The Pit, currently submerged in the water ocean surrounding the Matoran Universe. Varrix's mask was equipped with a rebreather so that he did not inhale his own toxic fumes in battle. It protected him from The Pit's mutagen.
Varrix immediately sought out the matoran so as to serve as a toa to them, but they did not trust toa criminals. He instead found an ally among the Barraki warlords - Kalmah. Varrix served as a lieutenant. He earned the nickname "The Toa of Blood" due to the iodine constantly dissolving around him in the water, which turns blood red, and also his ruthlessness in taking down the other Barraki armies in their macabre wargames.
When the Toa Mahri arrived in The Pit, Varrix was wise enough to avoid the toa team in case they were archons from Korrothis sent to destroy him. Using his mask of charisma, he convinced several other members of the Barraki's servants to bring him the mask of life instead of giving it to their masters, that he might finally reclaim his home island by force. He had been fanatical about this ever since it was taken over. Fortunately, this never happened.
When Spherus Magna reformed, Varrix was quick to re-enter the ruins of the old Matoran Universe and seek out his island. He was killed by a horde of Rahkshi that had been created there in the old makuta labs.
Varrix is a personal favourite of mine. He has purple. And spikes! Not to mention a new torso design using HF bones (which you also saw on Ahryz, but Varrix was built first) and most of all a custom mask! They never did make a mask of charisma for the official storyline - just used Tahu Mistika's mask. Blegh. He actually stemmed from more tinkering in trying to make a new Hynak head for Arrukhan, another evil MOC who is a serious contender for self-MOC status should I ever be able to build him. Ended up with Varrix instead, but I love him too. Only part I'm not exstatic about is the thighs, but, meh. Can fix those later. :)
Iodine is a halogen, one of group seven in the periodic table, and an element I've had to study extensively last year in Chemistry. Basically it reacts the same way as chlorine, fluorine and bromine. It's a black crystalline solid at room temperature, but turns directly into purple vapour when heated without being a liquid. Solutions of the stuff vary from yellow to brown to red to purple. In pure water it's red, which is why a lot of trans-red is on him. Tried to keep the spiky black look to him, hence all the skrall parts and claw parts, but also to give him tubes and a tank for the gas part. He's bulky because Iodine is a big atom - in fact, it is the largest element in use in the human body. It's found in the thyroid gland, helps to control metabolism. Only some bacteria, which have tungsten in them, have heavier elements.
This is absolutely spot-on. Right up my alley, far as style's considered, as well. Great proportion, sinister effects w/spikes and bulk in all the right places. Color scheme also far better than I'm usually able to pull off - I have trouble abiding, and brick attrition plays a part too :( Yours is just a bit of Amazing, though. Thanks for the Chemistry bit @ the end, too - a lil' trivia can go a long way. Cheers!

BTW wondering if you wanted to go on a head to head periodic table moc off?
-Hrm. I'm thinking... radioactivity. I need to get your Skype contacts! :D

I really enjoyed the educational bit about iodine.
-Lucky for you (and others) I'm currently editing the page with a video from Nottingham University. They've made a video for every element, and the Iodine one has some cool reactions!

My only complaint would be the back of the upper legs right at the very bottom, seem a bit bare, I'd like to see some more greebles there. Anyway other than that, a perfect build ;)
-Funnily enough, I was thinking the same last week, and shoved some small black plates in there.

You know, maybe you should try a Toa of some kind of molecule, like a Toa of Acetate! Or of Plastic (isn't that ironic)!
If you look at the biographies of Toa Tallus, or either version of Toa Kana/Brogas, you'll find a character called Alkanus who was created by them. He is a toa of hydrocarbons, which means plastics, petrol, tar, sugar, carbohydrates, DNA... and I've wanted to build him for ages. The plan is to give him chains, flames and a MOTORBIKE. Still haven't gotten around to it though.
I swear that you use some form of magic to build. I cant believe how amazing this is. The purppe and black work fabulously in the way you've mixed them, and using Iodine creates an intriguing flavor for a character. Amazing work, Gringat!
Fantastic MOC! I always liked black and purple MOCs. Great work on the body, I also like how you used both the old purple and the new purple from the Alien Conquest sets. The only thing I really don't like are the red Bohrok eyes on his arms. Also, haven't seen a MOC using a Squid Launcher used on a MOC in a long time.
Just insane! Possibly my favourite MOC I've seen from you! I'm amazed with what you've done with his head, not only have you built an amazing custom mask but you built it around a dang Metru head! I don't think that's ever been done before (Properly). The shields on his arms and his overall look and feel is amazing! Just epic! My only complaint would be the back of the upper legs right at the very bottom, seem a bit bare, I'd like to see some more greebles there. Anyway other than that, a perfect build ;)
I love the custom mask and the whole complex body build. but what i really like is the Black and Purple color combo which are my favorite colors since the two contrast each other. So great job.
And awesome background.
Awesome Moc! I love the colorscheme. In my opinion, it has just the right amount of purple. The Torso is also great. Now I'm going to try to experiment with Hero Factory skeletons more. Overall, this is a great moc. Keep it up!
