About this creation
2011 MocOlympics Round 4 Leda Kat vs the Legohaulic

Category: Is Today Thorsday Already? - Create your own version of an aspect of Norse Mythology.

I have had no encounters in my life with the tellings of Norse Mythology so was at a loss as to what to build this round. In researching the subject on google I was drawn to the name Loki

In
Norse Mythology Loki is described as crafty and malicious, a trickster and a shape-shifter.

However attempting to create enough passion for this subject in such a short amount of time felt to me a far cry and not really very do-able. I wanted to pull off a moc I could be really happy with and not just try recreate some image I saw on the internet... play to my strengths said those voices in my head, where does your passion truly lie? Movies.

In the 1994 movie The Mask Jim Carey plays a timid man whose life is changed after he stumbles upon a mask possessing the powers of the Norse god Loki. Under the influence of the mask he becomes confident and unruly.

Ok, now I can have some fun with this category!

Here I have chosen to re-create the Coco Bongo scene because it is full of colour, music, dance and shows off Loki's mischief in full glory.

I took the cue from the bright green of the Mask's face to colour the scenery. Keeping the stage, palm trees and bandstand from the original source material to help fans of the film recognise it I then let my fingertips loose with the decor of the club to add as much vibrance, colour and style I could pack into it.

And here is some fun with the shapeshifter Loki from the movie, when the baddies fire shots at him, the Mask changes shape at will to escape the bullets:

"Ole!"

"Thank you very much"

Bonus shots:

The band.

The cast at the Coco Bongo

Cheers for checking this out and thanks judges for all your time and effort and best of luck to all in the MocOlympics.

And the fan boys go WILD!!! I was pretty certain I commented on this....musta been in my head. Just like you're always in my head since June. In a very "CLEAN" way. ;) Excellent job! I don't think you have enough lime green tiles though! Glad you were able to use them at least once. Great job on taking down a powerful opponent, and good luck in the next round!

This build shows the raw talent you have not only building with Lego, but your talent in choosing colors and creativity. I love the cowboy version the best with the bowed legs. The mask was one of my favorite movies when I was younger and this brings back great memories. Great job and best of luck to you Leda!!!

My God, Leda - this may be your finest Lego moment yet! Absolutely LOVE the color work. How you managed to incorporate so many different colors and patterns while making it all work, I'll never know - But it TOTALLY works for me (and I'm SO picky about stuff like that). Insanely brilliant creation!

I haven't had time to really keep up to date with all my favorite builders, but now I'm actually going about and commenting, I can say that I really couldn't have judged this category if I were a judge. You and the Legohaulic both took, I think, very different yet equally wonderful way of expressing this category. The photography in both builds is superb, and while the Legohaulic's has gravity and a neat wing feature, yours has some really neat lighting features and humor. However, with the judging over and done with, congratulations on progressing through what is probably the closest round in the Olympics thus far, and good luck in round five!

Quoting Mike Johnson Have all the private giggles you like, I'm more than happy to oblige! By the way thanks for the promotion in the furry kingdom. The last person around these parts to do that was our dear old Hansi who who dressed me up (in fig) as a "party sheep" at the Hard Knocks Bar trying to dodge Kelso's "basestar." What a time that was!

Thanks mate, congrats to you too. Me you and Thoy all in the top 8, excellent huh. We gotta keep the down under from falling off the map! I felt the same as you when I saw your name next to mine. I believe I actually said the word "yikes!" and I don't believe anybody but cartoon characters actually say that word... judging by your entries so far you have some mean talent for details and I think your round 3 in particular really showcases your excellent ability for sets and stories too. You are going to be in your element this round. I wish you the best of luck.

Quoting Mike Johnson Or maybe it's just me since helping people get rid of rats is what I do for a living.
I'm a bit strange I know I must be because when I read that I suddenly had visions of a man dressed in a cat outfit with painted on whiskers and a pink nose sitting at his computer. Hehe, I seriously can't shake that vision! Whenever I see your name now I'll probably have a private giggle I think...

It's great to see everybody's favorite (or more importantly my personal favorite) lego gal come through again in the battle for the best! By the way I think your kitty has the right idea about about showing appreciation. The only appropriate response would be to build a rendition of your feline bearing gifts in lego form for all of us to behold. Or maybe it's just me since helping people get rid of rats is what I do for a living. Any hoot, congrats and salutations once again! Now on to R5.

Quoting The Colonel . Man I love this movie! Son of the Mask was a bit weird, but nothing can top this classic! Jim Carrey is one of my favorite actors, along with George Clooney, Anthony Hopkins, Jack Black, Owen Wilson, Jackie Chan, and more! Now favorite actresses... let's just put Rachel Wize in for now. When the MOCO's are over, can you do a request if possible Leda? It's a Disney movie and my favorite movie of all time. Road to El Derado. I don't have it, and Disney channel will never show it! *facedesk*
I agree with most of your favourite actors but would replace Jackie Chan with Will Ferrell and I think Rachel Weiss is probably my favourite actress too. I only really know her from the mummy movies, but I think she is both gorgeous and funny. As for El Dorado, I'm sorry but I haven't seen it. And it sounds to me like its hard to find... my favourite Disney film is Beauty and the Beast.

Quoting Matt David "Kiwi's don't have any hands so you're ok. They do however have very long beaks..." Is this another of those NZ-American translation quirks? Like where I have to go the New Zealand version of Wikipedia to discovery you're talking about a flip-flop?
Yes probably. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiwi A kiwi is actually a small flightless bird... hence the no hands thing and long beak thing. And a flip flop is a jandal, and kiwis wear jandals in the summer.

Crazy good stuff -- you've made me realize there IS a good use for lime green. The set looks marvelous with the patterns you created, and the bullet dodging is much more entertaining to me than that stupid "bullet time" crap from the Matrix or whatever that cruddy film was called. The bandstand (particularly the drumkit) is a knockout!

Well, here I have a guy that I have bought Lego off of, through Nannan’s charity auction, because I respect his building so much vs. a gal that I have engaged in a collaborative build with for BW (against said guy). Well, if this doesn’t and a confounding layer to this vote. Two builders that I respect and like; although, I have known Legohaulic for much longer. I have been thinking about this all morning until I finally managed to get out of the ER three-hours late. They are both dang clever builds: Leda’s lateral thinking and colour choices vs Tyler’s parts usage and power functions. This is not an easy decision to make. I won’t go on about 49 vs 51 or some such, as it is really 50/50 for different reasons. I will have to go with my gut on this one – lateral thinking wins the day. Leda has my vote, and as such, will be moving on to the next round. Congrats Leda! Lee.

Quoting Mr. Xenomurphy Congrats, Leda, you got my vote in this round, though it was close. Your ingenious use of extreme colours is impressive, dangerous, but very close to the movie (if I remember it correctly). Nice table design, by the way. The bullet pics are a fantastic addition and gave me a good laugh.
Thanks Xeno. Those tables were a happy accident actually, a few weeks ago when my niece was visiting, my Harry Potter spiral staircase suddenly somehow fell apart... and while making this moc I was rumaging through my unsorted collection of mess that I keep pushing to one side to deal with later when two of the sections just happened to be lying side by side like that on the bottom of the box and I thought "Oooo! Cool design! Where can I put that?"

This is a tough one, mainly because the entries are so different. Your take on the category was a big surprise. I had forgotten all about the movie, and the connection to Loki. Figures that you would make use of that little tidbit of info... Anyway, there are many clever aspects to this build, and it'S all quite interesting to view. "Get to the point!" you say, fine! This is one fantastic build my friend! I have to agree with your own comment about stretching the category - I did that with my R3 entry and though the judges didn't like the idea as much as my opponent, they still judged based on the building skill and flow in the build. It is Legohaulic your facing and I don't envy you at all, but I think you have really stepped it up this round and will be on a much closer level to him. I really hope you get through mate! ~Thoy

Legohaulic posted so early last round and it was the most impressive thing I've ever seen made in such a short amount of time... he's making me sweat this round, waiting to the very last moment perhaps I don't know. Quoting Popcorn . Ha ha! That's plain awesome! I received this same category in the MIT, and this gives me some ideas. Thanks!
Haha, pleased I can be of some help but don't get too carried away until we get the judges view on this, it is quite a category stretch I think...
Quoting Christopher Baldacci Wow! Super job! How did you do those lights on the front stage? They really make the whole thing pop. Also, using a ski for a chello bow was a really creative idea. the figs are Awesome and I like the wide cowboy legs technique. Sweet photos and stunning build. But where did you get all those lime green tiles! They rock! Great job! Legohaulics going to have to bring it.~Christopher
Thanks! There is a hole in the wall behind the stage so I could slide in three mini LED lights (2 white, 1 red) and the holes in the technic bricks subsequently lit up. The trans green tiles on the floor are lit up from underneath. Those lime green tiles I got in Chicago, PAB cup full of em. Finally found an occasion to use them!!! I love them, want to cover my walls in that colour, it makes me so happy.
Quoting Yuri Fassio Fantastic, I swear I could almost hear "Hey Pachuco" in the background!
I was dancing to that constantly while making it. Actually I'm dancing right now. That beat just gets the body swinging!
Quoting Riccardo Zangelmi it is very 80's disco, and I love that period of a thousand lights and extravagant hairstyles. Legohaulic is one of the best to build Lego for me, but you Leda, you're very good, both in the building, which in the photograph. And, anyway, will this challenge, you win! I hope you can go to the next round ... my best wishes. Richard
Thank you. I agree, Legohaulic is one of the best builders around these parts and when he reveals his epic creation I will shrivel up and die inside a little, but at least I am having some fun right now enjoying this moc and people's reactions to it.
Quoting Tyler Halliwell Very nice job. You found something that had to do with Norse mythology that fit your style. I didn't think that you could bend this category to your will, but you did. Excellent job and good luck.
Thanks Tyler, I hope the judges see it that way.
Quoting MortalSwordsman . The lighting effects used are much more subtle than your other entries, but add to the scene perfectly. I love the mix of colours and the minifigs. Good luck Leda :)
Yes I tried to tone the lighting effects down a notch in this one and focus a bit more on the build. Trying to show some diversity. But of course, I can't escape it completely ;) I just love light!
Quoting GINGAH TOM THIS IS SO CCOOLL I WANT TO KNOW HOW U DID IT
Hehe, which part?
Quoting DeTomaso Pantera I'll be honest this is not your neatest entry, there is a little too much going on and that half wall doesn't really need to be there. I don't like to be critical but I feel this may help you if you (hopefully) progress. Best of luck Leda you've got me wanting to see more :-)
Critique away my friend. A little too much going on is an understatement ;) That was exactly my intention when building this, I wanted it to be flashy and gaudy and headache inducing, you know that style of club, one can't say it is pretty. As for the wall, I can see where you are coming from there, but I disagree. It is an internal build. There are no exteriors to this set and I have pulled out in a couple of photos simply to show the scale and dimensions. But with internal sets like this they don't need to view well from afar, there needed to be wall around the stage and band on both sides so no matter where I placed the camera the room was complete. Thanks for your comment I like it when people pay enough attention to my creations to have some solid advice for me. I appreciate it :)

Wow!

A wonderful creation, my friend, for a theme so awful. The main character Leda is fantastic, and even the 'setting, it came very well .. it is very 80's disco, and I love that period of a thousand lights and extravagant hairstyles. Legohaulic is one of the best to build Lego for me, but you Leda, you're very good, both in the building, which in the photograph. And, anyway, will this challenge, you win! I hope you can go to the next round ... my best wishes. Richard

Funny movie and this makes me want to rewatch it. This is actually quite hilarious to those who have seen the movie. The band and their instruments are perfect and the decor is lovely.

Very nice job. You found something that had to do with Norse mythology that fit your style. I didn't think that you could bend this category to your will, but you did. Excellent job and good luck.

... I love this scene (in the film) and your unique take on it. The glowing floor and steps are excellent. And the shapeshifting Loki is hilarious. The lighting effects used are much more subtle than your other entries, but add to the scene perfectly. I love the mix of colours and the minifigs. Good luck Leda :)

The wall is fine, its limiting the area to give space to the other opening. The building is amazing and the colors are as well. Good Luck!

This is awesome I LOVE all the crazy colours and your lighting skills especially the green glowey tiles and technic steps! I'll be honest this is not your neatest entry, there is a little too much going on and that half wall doesn't really need to be there. I don't like to be critical but I feel this may help you if you (hopefully) progress. Best of luck Leda you've got me wanting to see more :-)
