My two entries to the MOC-off with Ben Cossy. Theme was to create two very different toa. My theme: "Beauty and the Beast". Say hello to Ia and Ahryz, servants of the Shadowlord!
About this creation
Name: Ia Gender: Female Race/Species: Ce-Matoran (G1) Occupation: Servant of Korrothis Title(s): Toa, Archon Prevailing Element: Shadow ("Dark" Psionics) Alignment: Lawful Neutral Affiliation: The Weave, The Kratoka, The Kranui Typical Tool(s): Trident, Mask of Spirit, Elemental Wings MOC Status: Disassembled
(Blackmore’s Night - ‘The Circle’)
Ia began life, as all matoran do, in the depths of the Shadowcaverns - the great tubes and machinery keeping the Matoran Universe functioning and "alive". From the Birthplace, she was transported to the Northern Continent and was more or less the first matoran there. She was one of the first matoran to be created without direct input from the Great Beings, and she proved to be both wise and intelligent, serving the role that turaga later would when the first of those came to be.
This history, and even her becoming a toa, are however lost in the haze that plagues all matoran, where memory rejects old information for the new. She knows that the Kranui, Nivorn, whom she now serves in Korrothis itself, chose her, but the details are lost to her forever. The gain of her powers was in fact a highly traumatic event. She was caught in a volcanic eruption, and a slew of hot energised protodermis enveloped her as it burst from the ground beneath her.
Her native psionics powers are both changed and augmented by Ia's close relationship with the shadowlord. Her body is darkened, slimmer and more agile and many of her psionic abilities accompany shadow powers as well. She is famously able to fly using wings made of pure shadow, and even extend them to form a shield around herself in times of need. Her trident is not so much a weapon as a tool to focus her powers through. While dark, her use of psionics is by no means evil, and in fact the strict code of an archon makes a normal toa's tactics look hedonistic by comparison.
Ia was sent out to assist the crew of a ship called The Tomorrow in the same year as Gringat and Xalos joined the council of Korrothis. Skilled in the use of her Iden, she was Nivorn's insurance against something going horribly wrong on its voyage - the first space voyage ever attempted by matoran, to Bota Magna. Her Iden allowed her spirit to take direct control of the ship, and this did happen.
It is unknown quite what happened to Ia and in fact the rest of the crew of The Tomorrow as well, as forays into the jungle of Spherus Magna have not yet located the site where The Tomorrow landed. Of all the known crew members recorded, it is theorised that Ia probably didn't die of the soulplague, but that doesn't rule out beasts, rahi and battera, or the actions of the Cult of the Neverending Night... but the most popular story is that she is living with Ahryz in the forest, and never has to come out.
Name: Ahryz Gender: Male Race/Species: Onu-Matoran (formerly), Hordika Occupation: Servant of Korrothis Title(s): Toa, Archon Prevailing Element: Shadow Alignment: Chaotic Neutral Affiliation: The Weave, The Kratoka, The Kranui Typical Tool(s): Crushing Claw, Mask of Silence, Rhotuka Spinner MOC Status: Disassembled
(Blind Guardian - ‘Mordred’s Song’)
Ahryz was released from the Shadowcaverns on the Southern Continent. He thinks there might have been a mistake with him because he was the only onu-matoran in the small fishing village he called home. In fact, he was the only male. The rest were all ga-matoran. ...Not that he was complaining. His work seemed to be half flood-defence building, half boatmaking and half pandering to the other matoran on seemingly useless tasks set for him.
Of course, after his area received a makuta "guardian", things went downhill. Some of the girls went missing and Ahryz, being a big, strong onu-matoran man, went out in search of them. They were dead, and the feral visorak that were busy wrapping up the leftovers for later had a good time of attacking him, too. They were full and sluggish, so he managed to kill them, walking away with but a scratch on his arm and the only living girl left carried unconscious over his shoulder. When he got back, the turaga gave him something - a toa stone, and said something about knowing he would be the one.
It was a disaster then when so soon after gaining his powers the venom kicked in and turned him into a hordika. The early hours of the next morning bore host to a massacre of hung-over matoran, and Toa Hordika Ahryz sat, hunched, in the centre of the village square. He stayed in the dead village for some weeks, gradually succumbing to the beast within him, killing any travellers passing by, any rahi in the forest, just wishing solitude. It is Ia that found him, sent by Nivorn to investigate the disappearances.
Ia's psionic abilities managed to subdue the Hordika side of Ahryz, forcing his old self to the surface. His condition was incurable, the venom being so advanced and him being so inexperienced. He was a full hordika, therefore a dangerous rahi, and therefore any toa should have killed him, but Ia, instead, brought him to Korrothis, and gradually trained him and suppressed his hordika side until he was in full control of himself again. Almost.
The two also found, weirdly, that they quite liked each other. Ia saw a beautiful mind in Ahryz, and Ahryz found pretty much everything about Ia beautiful. While Nivorn couldn't allow him high status in Korrothis, he was allowed to stay as a lay member, and in hope he trained hard to try and do something better, something to atone for the disaster that had befallen him before. After several years, one of Nivorn's archons retired, and Ahryz was allowed to take his place.
Since as an archon, Ahryz was basically new to the whole powers thing, he still concentrated most of his shadow abilities through his physical attacks, and through his rhotuka spinner. Like a Kahgarak, he was able to fire leeching rhotuka, and even rhotuka that opened portals to the Zone of Shadows, although only small ones that allowed energy from that realm to be used by him. His main weapon is his vice-like claw, which while perhaps not the sharpest or fastest, can cut through almost anything if enough force is applied for long enough.
When Ia was sent to assist The Tomorrow Ahryz pleaded that Nivorn allow him to go too, but there was no place for him on the trip, and the risk of having a hordika there was too great. He continued to do missions, a lot of them concerning the Brotherhood's misuse of the visorak, which he was of course immune to.
On Spherus Magna, one of Ahryz's first priorities was to find Ia in the Great Forest. He never came out again, and nobody knows why.
-Fourth Wall Commentary-
Well then. Phew! Hats off to whoever read all that. There's a reason I generally post my MOCs individually, but Cossy's MOC-off had me do this. The idea behind it is to create two toa that are very different to each other, like fat/skinny, tall/short, ranged/melee, red/blue and so on. He went for "Brains and Brawn", and I chose "Beauty and the Beast".
Ia is a BRCII character, and The Tomorrow is a real MOC made by BARON229 which, sadly, no longer has any pictures. But it was an AWESOME MOC.
Inspiration for Ia comes from many sources, but the greatest are Tsuki, and Cristou, the former just in the construction of the MOC and the latter inspiring the character herself right from the beginning. She uses Xinlo Olnix's foot design, my female body skeleton, and the rest is just stuff I came up with on the spot.
Ahryz is a completely new character made simply because of the MOC-off. He proved to be fun, and it was a challenge making him look like what I'd imagine a full-blown hordika (the Toa Metru didn't mutate fully) to look like while still keeping recognisable traits, like the weapon arm and spinner and face shape. I also kept a motif of the visorak on him, as you can easily see. Perhaps not as easy to see is the repeated 'mandible' placing on some of his armour, and the face which is similar in shape to a visorak's, while also resembling an existing kanohi mask (Chirox's). That face was TOUGH to get right. As far as I can tell, I haven't copied any designs from elsewhere here, although I have recreated the wings I used on Tazzuk and improved the design somewhat. Inspiration-wise, the visorak and hordika are a direct influence, and so did Gideon's Rakala species to a certain degree. Also maybe not inspiring but definitely giving me hope was Raudr's Nokama Hordika Revamp, which was posted while I was still working on Ahryz, and was feeling a little stuck in a rut with him.
Also, let me assure you they are both shorter than Gringat, even if Ahryz looks taller than he's meant to be.
Allow me to give this pair its 100th like! :D Great work here Mr. Gringat! I really like these MOCs. The Chibis look good to :). Could you do me a big favor and give me a few thoughts on this MOC? Here's a link: http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/360219
Stunningly beutiful mocs, they are definetely one of the best creations I've ever seen. The desighns you used are incredible, I can't tell you how much I love these toa. I'm going to have to fav you right now! :)
I nearly NEVER comment on Bionicle MOCs. Not because I don't like Bionicle, the early ones were fantastic, but I just have a lot of interest in that are. When I do comment, however, the MOC is epic! This is no exception. Beast is great, with lots of NPU, and beauty is a beauty. :) Good luck, I'll have to go see what Cossy wrote up... Keep on brickin'!
I'm not sure about Ia, but I definitely like Ahryz. The Wings are what really made the Moc stand out, but it is one of the few Mocs that actually has an authentic dark feeling to it. Would I be able to use that wing design if I give credit?

I Must Say, The MOCs Are Very Well Made But The Wings Are What Made This Stand Out So Much, They Look Very, No, Extremely Natural And Detailed, Very Nice Work On This.
Fantastic! I like Ia's body design very much, and also the nice part uses on her staff! An the color sheme was very well done, too. Ahryz has so many great details! It's a very interesting idea to use those inika-thornax-storage-pieces for leg armor. Overall they have a excellent appearance!
Whoa!! This duo is fantastic!! I haven't heard the name Ia in a while... It's a shame, really...but I digress (Oh! And the Tommorow is high on my list for reuploading. Expect the pictures back soon!). There's not much buildwise for Ia, especially compared to the Hordika in the room. :P All those greebles, the wings, the custom head, the asyemetry. Simply awesome.
O.O !!! The se two are epic. I like how you made Ia's skirt and how you used those Exo Force pieces for wings or whatever they are. Ia's staff also looks great, makes me think about getting some 3.0's. As for the other guy, he is VERY good. Great use of the Visorak from the '05 playsets, also, that wing design is so effin great! I think I like your entries more than Ben's.
Everything about Ahryz, seriously. What stands out to me most are his wings, face, feet and thighs, wondertastical. The themes you chose for each figures fit perfectly, the story was a bit confusing at times but aside from the wording of a few parts it flowed well and was short enough to be readable, but long enough to get attached to the characters. Ia has a very clever design as well, i like her stomach and chest greebles, as well as her legs (do i spy kai heffernan's design?) All around very nice build and story, a wonderful mix i must say.

excellent job gringat! I love Ia's look reminds me of a pixie or a fairy
Gringat, you're one of the most awesome MOCists around this page, your stuff is always mindblowing amazing! The idea of using system pieces for Ia's wings (which are also transparent, which makes them look like fairy wings) and the skirt is awesome, and Ahryz comes with an gorgeous amount of greeble (his legs are my favourite part of them). All in all, great work!
Monarth: "An element of my liking... >:)" Yeah, awesome and interesting designs you have there. I love Ahryz' almost half-dragon appearance, though the eyes don't feel to work. The upward position of them is just slightly awkward. The wings are epic on both of 'em :)
Ia: Her build is a nice design. The use of windshields as wings is an interesting idea. However, it does clash with the use of trans blue, but the addition of trans black on the trident did help that. The chest greebles are well done, adding spikes and such to give it that darker look, however the use of silver does irk me to a point, I mean it works well with the clever weapon, but it does clash with the color scheme. The use of dark blue wings as a skirt is something seen before, but it works marvelously, despite the fact it looks like it hinders the hip joint. The legs as a whole do look great, the combination of HF/Bionicle/Technic works well. The arms could have been better in design, but considering the MOC is female, I understand. The head design is a good fusion, however I do not think the mask fits with it well, but considering it matched the color scheme, it is okay. Overall, a 7.5/10.
Ahryz: This creation is nothing short of a masterpiece. This all reminds me of Gringat’s personal rendition of Makuta Tazzuk, and went back and fiddled with existing designs. The head is rather striking, using clever techniques, and the use of trans black eyes is subtle, but a nice touch. The use of glow-in-the-dark Visorak in the build is genius for a foot design! Also, the wings are simply orgasmic, I really wish I could use a design myself! If I had to be nit-picky, the asymmetry does bug me, but it is a Hordika. Overall, a glorious build! 9.5/10.
Both did a fantastic job, but I believe Gringat is the winner. It was close, but I feel that Gringat had some better concepts, and filled out the theme of different Toa better. I love all the entries, and thank you both for letting me judge, great job!
Sorry to say, I'm rooting for Ben Cossy ! But I do love these creations ! But yeah, beauty and the beast is a great idea ! I love the skirt and wings ! the weapon is truly creative and well, your style of weapons ! I just don't like the lower legs and feet. so I say 4.5/5 on 5. For the beast: Well his back-story is really cool ! He is extremely impressive moc ! I must admit the Zamor extensions on the legs, mini visoraks as toes, and the wings are extremely well done and creative!(and I'm jealous of that epicness)Not soo sue the head fits a hodika look, but it is amazingly well done and thought out ! Good luck in the moc off, and although I am rooting for Ben, I do believe you have a chance of winning ! Talk and comment with you soon. Chopperskull.
Oh curd... Well I'm dead :D Anyway, amazing work! The Beast, is just amazing! The wing, the head EVERYTHING! is beautiful! The greebles :] Also the Beauty is amazing! Like you said I love how she has more "build" beautiful than actually beauty, amazing work ;) Good luck friend, even though I'm a dead man :D
To answer various questions, the parts on Ia's trident are the new HF3.0 weapons, and Ahryz's wings are my own design. Also I only have two vezon capes. Had to mine them from other MOCs during the build. A lot of my other MOCs have suffered a few minor injuries for these two. :P
Very well done; Cossy will have a tough two entries to match! For Ia, I like her torso a lot and the wings and staff are both done nicely, but I feel that the legs are a bit too simple. Ahryz totally takes the medal home though. I like the Visorak around his body, the use of the zamor chambers as thighs, and that wicked weapon he has. His wings are also very matching to his personality. Great job, and good luck!
Now Ia is nice (i like the weapon) but Ahryz is AMAZING! Those upper legs are great and the wings are nice too. So is...well... EVERYTHING! Nitro and Shadowflame look cool to. You really nailed Shadowflame!
