MocOlympics round 2 Cody G vs Magma !
My entry to the second round of the MocOlympics in the category of "Dystopian Microscale". Enjoy!
About this creation
2011 MocOlympics
My noble opponent's homepage.

When I was given the category of Dystopian Microscale, I was exceedingly happy. I've done a few microcities before and, being a high school student, I have had a fair share of dystopian novels shoved down my throat. The only problem was deciding which classic novel I should base my city off of. For those of you who know me, it should come as no surprise to you that I decided to bend the rules a bit and make three cities in one. I present to you, the horribly messed up metropolis of Tributopia!

The first district of Tributopia is a tribute to one of the most popular dystopias from George Orwell's novel 1984. The entire feel of the novel is rather grey and colorless, so the district follows the theme.

Shown here is a clock tower and some apartments. Secretly, the tower is also a huge telescreen that looks over much of the city. Big Brother is watching you.

The Ministry of Truth, where Winston, the protagonist of the novel works.

This building is one of my favorites. It is kind of foreboding, but isn't that impressive. That kind of sums up the whole society in 1984.

More dystopian buildings. I got that odd train joint piece (on the left side of the photo) in a big bag of legos that I got from a secondhand store. It fit perfectly with the 1984 feel.

Winston used the train to get away from the city sometimes, as a means to gain some private time with his... squeeze.

The next district is from Ayn Rand's novel Anthem. It is rural, low-tech, and collective. Everyone in the book is supposedly equal, so I decided to make the buildings identical.

Farmland. Anthem takes place in the future, but in a sort of dark age. No, not just away from legos, but away from all modern technology.

The main character in the book, Equality 7-2521, runs away into the forest because of his need to have his own, non-collective personality. Anthem has a strong emphasis on the importance of individuality.

The last district of Tributopia is based off of Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, which takes place in a powerful city where the people are uneducated and ignorant.

The buildings are all tall and grand, but very similar, which reflects the lack of creativity that the people in Fahrenheit 451 have.

The protagonist, Guy Montag, is a firefighter, but not in the traditional sense. His job is to burn down houses that have books inside of them. In this society, books are considered dangerous objects that must be destroyed.

The houses are also similar, except for the fact that one is on fire. Knowlege is a heavy burden when those around you are ignorant.

Another shot of the smoke, which I enjoyed building very much.

Montag escapes the city by crossing a river. There he meets a group of people who, like him, discovered the importance of books and knowledge and were thus exiled.

Well, that's all! This was a challenging build for me, seeing as I wanted to follow a theme rather than build whatever I wanted and come up with some BS explanation as to why it is a dystopia. Hopefully the judges appreciate that. Thanks for viewing and cheering me on, and don't forget to let me know what you think!

Quoting Mark Kelso Congrats on the win, Cody. Just to finish things out here, you've also got my vote. I love the concept here - terrific! The MOC as a whole, is also very cleanly built, with nice parts usage, and well presented. A win well earned. See you in round 3!

Quoting Leda Kat =^..^= I am envious of anybody who can pull off a really good micro city build. You have done three! Well done, each third has a distinct design and shows you obviously paid a lot of attention to those set books at school.
Thanks, Leda! Glad to hear that paying attention in school served a purpose. :)

Cody, Even without the literary connections, you have created a well designed mircoscale environment that projects a feeling of dystopia. But, you really did put a good deal of thought into this and have earned my vote. ~Dave

Ah, 1984, one of the most depressing and boring books ever written.... Brave New World was much better... still, none-the-less, a great creation... I rate your creation "Double plus good" :P...

Ah, dystopia... My eighth grade english teacher was obsessed with it. Dystopia and Edgar Allan Poe. Wonderful, nice teacher, morbid and creepy taste in literature. Anyway, I love the different sectors. "Tributopia" was a referance to the Hunger Games, I assume? I love the smoke. Very greebly, yet, um, smokey. Kind of "billowing," I guess. Fantastic creation, I'm rooting for you, Cody!

Quoting Master Shifu Leo J Man, that's deep! It almost gave me a headache comprehending it. Now I gotta read those novels. Urgh! Great entry! Good luck!
You too, those novels are some heavy material. Not literally, because they're all pretty short books, but those authors don't need five hundred pages to confuse the cuss out of you.
