My Classic Space Chess Set

My take on this topic was quite simple, a simple black and white chess set wouldn’t do, so I though what could best represent the strategic yet fun game of chess: good vs evil and man vs machine! So I pondered obvious themes such as Transformers, man vs food LOL! .... and then I thought good old classic space vs evil robots would make a great theme for this challenge. So back to my childhood I went to bring the strategy of chess and the fun of Classic Space Lego together for this MOC.

I chose clean lines, playability, a compact design and general nostalgic fun with Lego over an overly complex build which may have distracted and detracted from the chosen theme. The chess board is mostly studless and uses only pieces that were available in the classic space era. Instead of accessing my complete brick stock (herein lies the challenge), I limited myself to classic space era bricks only! (This may help or hinder me, we'll let the Judges decide as I believe I raised my level of difficulty by limiting what parts I could use). You will notice some of the details are that of the common sets of that time. Like the black and yellow striped details on the wings / chess board, classic space insignia, booster rockets and arrow pieces etc. The board is a functioning classic space cruiser toy, complete with working cockpit for a driver, where classic Lego astronauts and evil robots can settle their differences aboard its back in zero G.

You can see this project in more detail on my youtube channel: click here .

The Playing Field (Chess Board):

The Players (The Pieces):

Kings: Lego White Astronaut with Classic Space Flag Vs. Blacktron Commander with Robot control console.

Queens: Astronaut on Rocket Sled Vs. Sentient Robot Sidekick on Rocket Sled.

Bishops: Rockets / Missiles.

Knights: Laser Assault Towers.

Rooks: Radar dish installations!

Pawns: Classic Space Astronauts vs evil remote control robots.

Judges, fellow MOCers: Enjoy!...and please excuse my poor photography skills!

This brilliant. Firstly Classic Space (hooray!). Secondly I can imagine the whole set flying through space, playing games as it crosses the galaxy. Totally Chris Foss or Peter Elson, especially with the checkered pattern. I think that the rooks are my favourite pieces.

I'm staying for now....its sadly entertaining, I'm just trying not to put my two cents in. I was half kidding about the splinter group, although probably a good idea as the group is way off topic. No fault of anyone but those who cannot follow the rules.
Quoting DeTomaso Pantera I'm still in love with this MOC! Did you leave MOC Help? I'm up for being a MOD in a splinter group if you are? It might be more hassle than it's worth though lol

When I First Looked At This, I Have To Admit, I Felt The Pieces Were Too Simple, For Someone Of Your Skill. But Before Jumping To Conclusions, I Read Your Comments, And It Made Sense That You Were Indeed Intentionally Using Classic Pieces And Thus The Limitation Was Self Applied For A Challenge Aspect. So, With That In Mind, I Must Admit The Board Is Stellar, And The Pieces, Considering The Limitation You Placed On Yourself, Are Actually Very Well Made, Considering You're Making Chess Pieces, Which Should Be Nice But Not Crazy Complicated As They Have To Fit On The Board With Each Other. So, It Was A Crazy Idea To Limit Yourself For A Competition, It's A Shame That Aspect Wasn't Enough To Win You The Round, But The MOC Is Very Nice Nonetheless. Good Work.

Sadly That's The Nature Of Risk Taking. I Hope All Of The Judges At Least Took That Into Account, If Were A Judge I Would Have Given You Bonus Points For Sticking To A Theme And Limited Parts Set In Order To Achieve The Look You Aimed For. This May Have Lost A Round In A Contest, But It Certainly Wins In The Long Run. Also, I Have To Admit, It's Rather Weird Having This As Your Most Popular MOC, Not That It's Not Worthy Of The Spot, It's Just The Fact It's Not A Transformer.

So its all tied up with one vote to go! Good luck to us a both! Cheers!
Quoting Thoy Bradley LOL Chris, you managed to get on the wrong side of the fence with my fiance.. Not a guy at all. It also appears that her page information hasn't been put back up since the server crash. She wasn't angry, just stating an opinion on the builds, my guess is she didn't give you the ILI because she is unfamiliar with how to rate. Anyway, I thought our second judge did the common thing, if he voted for you he would be the one causing the kick-out ;) Even if his reasons were genuine (which I wholeheartedly think they were) its very rare I see the two first votes go the same direction in a close match like this. Best of luck with Matt! I think we both need it ;) ~Thoy

Quoting Mr. Xenomurphy Chris, I'm sorry, but my vote goes to your opponent, although I'm a huge fan of the classic space series, but that's not enough. Maybe you shouldn't have limitted yourself by using classic parts only. Tough decision, but not usefull in a contest.

As I said I can respect ur opinion, it justs comes accross angry or something. cheers Chris
Quoting Mel Bradley Not cool, you should check my page to find out who I am. If you want to be petty and break it down the boards are only bricks too. You didn't get my point, in an active game Thoys pieces are much more recognisable, and his board has the messy look any battlefield would - perhaps the judges should consider what he was aiming for too. You don't have to like my opinion but at least be mature about it.

what r u his brother. LOL! By the way you could not have read the description detailing why the limited parts were used. It was all to get the basic retro feel! You've missed the point but judge one has already got it! And I wouldn't says miles as neither of our pieces are any more than minifigs on a few bricks! The boards are in my opinion the true artistic points of both works!

I think you two are going to have the closest match in this round. I am absolutely in love with this chess set! The board itself is so rad! The pieces are really cool as well. The cool thing is you both did something completely different and in different eras. LEGO should take some notes from these sets for their series of games. I would buy your's in a hearbeat!

Hmm, first comment got swallowed by moderation... due to my description of the task ahead for judges lol. Man you have picked the task of modifying the board too, and the complete opposite era in time! I think we both nailed our mission :) Good Luck Chris, this really is up to the judges(poor them)... ~Thoy

WAY COOL! I love how the board is actually a spaceship, and all the neat things. Imagine a rocket (Bishop) hurtling towards an unprotected little spaceman (Pawn)! Out of 5 stars, I give it 8!

Gosh we have both taken to the idea of 'Make the board a feature'. Other than that we went for completely different ideas and IMO nailed them. Sucks to be a judge on this one! Good Luck Mate! (vote Pedro) ~Thoy

Oh wow. While I never really had or played with these old Lego 20 century sets. I see they are still epic. Nice job. I give it 10/10.

Dude! This is classic...space! (groan) Anyway, I love that you used only old-school pieces and that they're not all worn out and chewed up (like my old pieces). The board as space shuttle is a great touch. Good luck!
