The modules are stackable like big 1x2 LEGO bricks. Each module can be opened on the back side without unstacking the modules.
About this creation
A few weeks ago I read an article about Minifig display stands in BrickJournal #13. It showed a lot of different boxes to display Minifigures. For my special Minifigures I was already looking for a new way to display, so this article was just right for me.
There were shown pictures of modular boxes that could be stacked just like LEGO bricks. And there were pictures of a box built with LEGO bricks. So I decided to combine the two ideas and build a display box which could be stacked just like LEGO bricks.
I started with the biggest window brick available a the LEGO store, the 1x6x5 transparent wall element and built the box around it. The back side should be able to open, so I added some hinges below the rear window.
After building a first satisfying version in LDD, I added the bricks for the first four modules to my latest Pick A Brick order. When I got the bricks I could finally start building these things.
Four of the modules built and each with a Minifigure inside.
Top view: Two modules connected with the 1x2 plates on the top. The two studs in the middle of each module are used for the stacking.
Three modules stacked together. Jedi Knights and Sith Lords need a clamp as an adapter to hold an activated light sabre.
Front view of a single module. Who's that guy?
Left rear view. See the slider plate on the top as a handle to open the back window.
Bottom view
Left rear view, open. The back window can be opened without unstacking the modules.
An LDD LXF file of the latest version (including my LEGO Avatar) is added. I changed some minor details after building these ones: I added one plate in height just below the windows and added a 1x2 Technic brick with two holes on each side, each with a pin "with a knob". So now, there's a little more space in the box and the boxes can easily be connected on the sides, too. All the parts are currently (September 2011) available in the LEGO Shop.
This is an awesome idea! I really like these but those trans panels are not cheap :-( I've made my own take on your Ferrari TR, used the same front as you ;-)
