MO:R2 Thoy Bradley vs Chris Roach "Checkmate"
This is my entry for the MOC Olympics Round Two, Category - Build a Chess Set.
About this creation
My mandatory link to the MOCOlympics Homepage

And my mandatory link to the homepage of my very worthy opponent Chris Roach. He is very well known for his fantastic Transformers MOCs, and his entry for Round 1 shows that he is comfortable in any genre of Moccing! Heres to hoping that i've done whats needed to make sure none of you have to face him ;)

So seeing as I had to build a Chess set for my entry I thought, why not make it a bit more exciting, make it feel like a battle rather than a mind game, give the pieces character and not just static placeholders! I present to you all - my Chess set! Theme is the Kings Army vs the Undead Hordes.

This model is called Checkmate, as I thought it was fitting for the category and nature of this competition ;)
To emphasize this I have set the board up in the fastest possible way to Check-Mate an opponent - it takes 2 moves from White and two moves from Black for the White King to be Check-Mated. Pf2-f3 Pe7-e6 Pg2-g4 Qd8-h4+M Follow these moves to do it yourself ;)

Enjoy!

Now Lets take a closer look at the playing pieces for comparison sake!

First up - the Rook
This design was inspired by the classic Tower appearance that the classic Rook had, Towers = Archers!

Second up - the Knight
Also inspired by the classic Knight, a horse. Rather than just stand there looking boring why not ATTACK! We have a battle to win!

Third up - the Bishop
In the classic set-up these are tall tower shapes, similar to the King and Queen, only the Bishops have a helmet - much like the ones used in Fencing Duels. While the Black Bishop is exactly as I had envisioned the White one was originally going to have a gold cross in its hand - I only had one gold cross piece so FLAG that!

Forth - the Pawn
Nothing special here, just a minnow who can progress the ranks to become a Queen - but what if its a male Pawn?? Not now sonny...

Fifth - the King
Clothed in Royalty this guy is the objective of the game, quite often the tallest piece on the board he is hard to miss! I've gone for a look similar to the Bishop, but with some very worthy changes to the throne ;)

Lastly - the Queen! Because every Begginer in Chess loves her versatility - careful not to get her trapped though!
Sitting on an identical throne to her King, she is armed with powers beyond the understanding of the other pieces - the King is even so unaware! If he hadn't eaten so many meat pies and could move than one square at a time he might have found out what the Queen did in her spare time!

Now the family shots! Very fitting!

CHECKMATE!
4th wall: Man this was a fun category!

Quoting Chris Roach I had the peoples vote but not the judges. I knew I was dead when I didn't get Mr. Xenomorphy's vote. Great match-up! Good luck Thoy, make sure you win it all now! Cheers! Chris
Hey thanks for the awesome competition, I think deep inside we both expected yours to take it, the cleanliness was spot on. Glad this was such a nail biter! I'll have to well enough for both of us now ;)

Quoting Matt David The battlefield set-up and the excellent styling on all of the pieces were enough to give you the slight edge over your opponent's fantastic entry. Congratulations!

Quoting Mr. Xenomurphy Thoy, this is most impressive. Looking at your board, I'm instantly reminded of a clever combination of chess and Hero Quest or a tabletop game like Warhammer. This, in addition to the level of detail all your figures show, leads to granting you my vote, dear Sir.
Thanks man, your money is on the way! I'll be honest this was a vote I wasn't expecting, but a hugely helpful one none the less! Cheers :D

ur fiance?....Mel like Melanie?.....oh boy! Send my apologies! I'm in trouble now! I think that comment started a war with some of my supporters too! As for the last and final vote: I don't know which way its going to go as I thought I played this round to Mr. Xenomorphy's tastes, so I am surprised that vote went that way! So its all tied up with one vote to go! Good luck to us a both! Cheers! Maybe I should get my wife to make her own page too! nah better she doesn't see my activities here! LOL!
Quoting Thoy Bradley LOL Chris, you managed to get on the wrong side of the fence with my fiance.. Not a guy at all. It also appears that her page information hasn't been put back up since the server crash. She wasn't angry, just stating an opinion on the builds, my guess is she didn't give you the ILI because she is unfamiliar with how to rate. Anyway, I thought our second judge did the common thing, if he voted for you he would be the one causing the kick-out ;) Even if his reasons were genuine (which I wholeheartedly think they were) its very rare I see the two first votes go the same direction in a close match like this. Best of luck with Matt! I think we both need it ;) ~Thoy

Quoting Chris Phipson Oh boy, my first "vote" of the Olympics and it HAS to be a match up like this one! You guys both pulled out all the stops here. I'd love to play a game on this board man! As for my vote (and... it was "bleeping" close) it has to go with Chris. His was just a bit more "uniform" for me. This really IS too close a match to call just yet so good luck with the other judges! ~ Chris.

Judges decision is final Quad, I have no problem with Chris' feedback, and infact agree with him about the unity part. I achieved what I was going for but if it doesn't play to the judges hands its not going to get votes. All the same, thanks for the support ;)

Quoting Dave Sterling Looks fantastic! I would have like to see a little more texture/foliage between each of the squares. The open tan leaves a little to be desired. Aside from that, I love it! Great piece design and a really nice overall theme. Well done and good luck!
I'm not sure about more foliage as this would draw the concentration away from the pieces, but I do think if I had enough green plates to replace the tan the overall look would be much better, the battlefield would have had better earth tones. I had lots of brown but felt it was too close to the colour of the squares for it to be justified. Thanks Dave!

Excellent, this is really an untraditional chessboard, but I love it! Extremely clever. Good luck!
  September 28, 2011
The sheer size lends well to the feel of a grand battle you were going for. I agree with Dave in that some details in between squares would have been welcome. I also enjoyed the fact that you set up a playable scenario for us to consider, nice "move" on the presentation.

Excellent work Thoy, you just added the exact amount of extra bits to the board so that it does not detract from the game itself. The chessmen are beautiful. My favourite is the vampire Bishop. Have you played a game with it yet? I can't play chess to save my life, but my friend and I used to have fun with it in the back of 6th form maths, we created our own rules. THIS would have been PERFECT for that!

Quoting Deus Otiosus You could have done more... Like ruins between fields, and forest area, desert area, sea area... Maybe mountains - fields on a higher levle (just cosmeticaly)? The figures of course are amazing, each on their own, but they seem too different from one to the other. I'm sure it appears from this comment that I don't like the creation, but in fact I only expected more and could extract the worse part better. It's not like you failed any shapes or details, there just isn't enough - if you go for huge, you must make the scenery huge.
Its a Chess board what more do you want? ;) The idea was to decorate without detracting from the game in its classic form - I think the balance is perfect. The tan is my only qualm, would have preferred it to be green, but hey I have next to no green plates lol.
