Welcome to one of my largest and most complex creations to date. The League of Explorers is an 18 by 34 diorama featuring an abundance of interesting details and techniques. Based on my own imagination, this particular build took over a month in planning and sketching, as well as over two weeks in construction. So please enjoy scrolling through the following photographs, and be sure to rate and comment!
About this creation

Established in 1587, the League of Explorers has been home to some of the most prominent European Adventurers of the 17th and 18th centuries. Housing famous artifacts and relics from across the globe, the society is also the site of planning and preparation for ever ongoing expeditions. Stepping into the society, you are greeted by the crackle of firewood and the rays of colored light shining through the stained glass windows.

An artistic shot displaying the warm interior of the League of Explorers.
The inspiration for this creation came mainly from a long staring contest with that globe element. The last time we had one of those contests this happened, but quite honestly, that piece deserved better than what I did to it last time.

The diorama is divided into three main sections. This first section is where some of the greatest expeditions have been planned and mapped.

The society's servant, Figgis; smartly dressed and bearing wine and cheese.

A rack of broadswords on the wall just because it looks cool.

The epaulette-wearing head explorer, Sir Regis Ogel.

The center parlor where tales of high seas and far away lands waft to the rafters.

Two candles, a ship in a bottle, and several prestigious trophies rest on the fireplace mantle below a somewhat familiar painting.

Fireplace tools.

Bundle of wood.

Small bookcase/table with the globe centerpiece and wine glasses.

My custom-designed armchairs.

Sir Augustard Kcirb.

The third section of the League of Explorers houses the relics, artifacts, and trophies discovered on many of the expeditions.

A bear's head and a chest of pirate gold.

Sir Hansimmons Duts.
The creation dis-figured, and removed of all removable objects. I sort of played doll house with this build, but it does create a dynamic feel.

My SNOT rugs. This was the first time I have experimented with sideways cheese wedges. I was very pleased with the result.

To add more realism to the diorama, the rugs are actually raised 1/6 stud distance off the floor, and are friction-fit into appropriately sized holes. The ratio for the rug technique can be found here.

And finally, all of the minifigures together. I had a lot of fun on this build, and I hope you enjoyed viewing it as much as I did creating it!

Hey Paul! It was great to see/talk to you on Max's birthday! Skype kind of blows me away...but anyway I'm revisiting this creation to study the fireplace (hahaha). Epic. Oh and by the way, dates for judging week #3 for the "LOTR Trilogy Contest #3" are September 3rd-10th (that's right, I finally posted them). It really was great to see you! We need to get together in person sometime though! Thanks for letting me know about the judging dates. I have not been paying as much attention to the thread as I should be. I can't wait! |

I still think the idea is cheesy, but it is incredibly executed! The stained glass windows are my favorite, though the swords on the wall are cool too. I don't like the pharaoh head dress, but the roman helmet is great. I WILL PROVE THAT PUREST CANDLES CAN BE CREATED!!!!! |

Not a bad build, to bad you used "brick arms" though. |
