Last year's Champion, a ninja from the Water School, escorts the eight fighters who have passed the qualifiers. This year we have top ninjas from every one of the elemental schools, along with a martial arts sensei, a female ninja and a mysterious evil fighter.

The battles also serve as display events where kings and generals look for recruits to their ranks among the contestants. Personal conflicts stay outside upon entering the Arena complex of the Fire Temple. Sworn enemies stand side-by-side orderly in the presence of Emperor Akao.
