The Royal Army needed a new reconnaissance vehicle and a new IFV to replace the aging Warrior and Scimitar platforms. BAE was tasked with the designing Sabre IFV/Light Tank. The vehicle would have two different configurations; each with its own mission task.
The IFV variant is capable of carrying 7 passengers plus a crew of three. It is armed with a 40mm Bofors, a 12.7 mm coaxial machine gun, and dual wire or laser guided ATGMs.
The light tank variant has a crew of 3. It is armed with a laser dazzler (which is capable of finding the location and distance of shooters and to blind commanders of other tanks) and a 105 mm gun. The gun system will be using very little conventional tank munitions, and will only carry 5 SABOT rounds. Its main armament will be "sniper" ATGMs. These have a range of nearly 2 miles, and the concept is similar to that of the Sheridan and M60a2.
