Brickworld 2011: Behind the Fellowship.
Behind the scenes of our collaborative Lord of the Rings build for Brickworld 2011.
About this creation
Disclaimer: I have been stranded in Brisbane Australia for 3 nights now (and it is looking to be at least another night) because a giant ash cloud from the volcano in Chile is hovering over New Zealand making it too dangerous to fly... I'm tired and miss my kitties, therefore I absolutely cannot be bothered looking up the correct spelling of all the LOTR place names that I am about to mention. If you take offence by this, get over it.

This is a behind the scenes of the rise and fall of the Journey of the Fellowship. Brickworld, 2011. I will be doing a proper post of the actual builds soon.

Day 1. The map of Middle Earth goes down first... after we figure out which way it goes. The artist behind it, Mark Kelso (awesome job Mark!) had to even be called up and asked which way to place it, once down though it proved to be that extra special edge that our entire collaborative layout needed to bring the crowds in.

Next, the rebuilding begins. Danette Jones, wife of the lovely (don't believe the rumours) Dr. Lee Jones gets right in the thick of things and helps out with rebuilding Kelso's broken Minis Tirith. All along the front of the table you can see Kevin's packages of his destroyed Baradur and sitting alone in the far corner is Kevin himself, behind Dave Sterling's Minis Morgual just building and rebuilding till it got done. What a trooper. He was definitely the man of the year at this event and deserves a medal and a really big drink.

Shannon Ocean put so much time and effort into rebuilding Kelso's exhibit that he can almost claim the build as his own. You are awesome Shazza! And it was fantastic to not be the only one there with a down under accent. Great to meet ya and sorry you had to leave so early.

Lee Jones reconstructs his impressive mines of Moria and the Misty mountains behind it. WOW what an amazing builder he is, and a real sweetheart too!

Batman himself, Mr Dave Kaleta putting his Rivendell together. That was an enchanting build full with fantasy and jaw dropping beauty. I just couldn't get enough photos of that one, there were so many little details that needed to be explored.

Minis Tirith taking shape. Kelso built the bottom half, and Chris Phipson the top. The merge of the two were seamless, like it was built by the same person. They must have had their Jedi mind force turned on full to achieve that kind of perfection.

Heath tries to make head and tail of Kelso's Minis Tirith... he wants a drink... and Kevin just keeps building in the corner.

All that colour is the inside structure of Kevin's Baradur, having personally helped dismantle this thing, I am so amazed at the level of skill used in creating it.

The next thing to figure out is how to connect the dots...

Here we have those responsible for making my time in Chicago the most fun I've ever had.

Tyler Haliwell's impressive rendition of the battle of Helm's Deep on the left, and Dennis Price's beautiful Edoras.

The first section of Chris Phipson's awesome Isenguard is placed while two of Tyler's ents watch.

Unfortunately two of our team couldn't make it, Kelso and Mister Bones. So here we have Dave and Dennis trying to rebuild Bones' Osgiliath. I think they had fun... I supervised.

Ooo! Hey look, my little township of Bree and the inn of the Prancing Pony won Best Small Building. (I will do a proper post of Bree soon)

Kevin's Baradur won Judges Choice, along with his Cookoo clock.

and our entire group layout won too!!!

After the public left on Sunday it was time to get smashing!!! Dave's Rivendel was first.

Kevin lets out some of his stress!

Bags and bags of black bricks.

Sterling is having A LOT of fun methinks!

Brilliant!

You guys are awesome! Can't wait till next year!

Someday I will get around to a driver's license and some cash, and you'd better be at Brickworld the year I do! (In the meantime, I'll just enjoy the bricks at home.) Glad to hear you had such a good time!

Meeting you in person was certainly a highlight for me. Hopefully next year I'll have my life better organized so that I can spend more time with people like you who have traveled from around the world to be in Chicago. An absolute pleasure to be part of the experience with your illustrious company.

I think your last picture captured the experience the best.....LAUGHTER! That's all we did for nearly a week! It was amazing to have so much fun with so many friends in such a short amount of time. You are all family to me, and I can't wait to see you all again next year! You're a very lovely woman Mills, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart. ;) It was an absolute pleasure being with you! I hope that you make it home soon, I know the feeling of being away too long and it's not fun!

Behind the scenes! So great, I'm very surprised about how many pictures were taken, even without my knowledge... who wonders, I was building! It was great to meet the person behind the name, okay we had our differences in communication, but next time you'll be prepared ;-) - Kevin

Quoting Hans DendauwNPD Great to see yet another perspective of what was obviously a famous time had by all. So, you will be making the trek again next year? I really hope so, I'd hate to have missed you by a year =P Also, did everyone on the team get a little trophy or was there just one? Sorry for all the questions, we've missed chatting with you(those of us not lucky enough to meet you). Hope you make it home soon, safe and sound!~H
Yes, sorry I haven't been around much lately, I've had quite a bit going on, I've missed you all too. But BW has revitalised me and filled me with inspiration so I will be back up and running with full force as soon as I can! As for the trophy, it was just one for the entire group, but Lee is going to build us all one each so we can have a keepsake.

I would give a lot to have been there to see this thing in person. Congratulations on the awards! I do have a question though, how exactly do you rebuild a disassembled piece built by someone else? Do they send along instructions of some kind?

It may be a little stressful to rebuild some of those large set-ups for the event, but (in my experiences) the builder seems to memorize every detail. >Eric
