To be, or not to be... Gray that is...
So, that's the question. There has been a lot of debate over whether snowspeeders should be gray or white. Well, I say either, or possibly both. Allow me to share some observations that have drawn me to this conclusion.
About this creation

First, the ILM model used in the film with the orange markings appears to be a dirty white, or is that a very light gray?

This is a movie still, and it appears to me that both are that same dirty white. The one with the gray markings is supposed to be the one Luke is piloting.

But wait, when he crashes, it does appear to be gray. And where did the dark gray marking go?

So, with that in mind and wanting to make another snowspeeder anyway, I made a gray one with a few alterations to the original one. And I'll apologize now for my sky being wrinkled. I didn't feel like getting the iron out.

I changed the blaster tips, convertors, and figured out how to add upper air brakes. Some of the changes were necessary because parts I originally used on the white one didn't come in gray and I wanted both to be identical.

A few minor mods had to be made so the air brakes would work properly. Notice the slight alteration to the 1x2 grille piece to allow the flag to lay flat. Also notice the dark bluish gray 1x1 slope pieces.

And with a quick change of a few slope pieces, it can be easily modified to which ever version you like.

The 2x2 tile on the front can also be easily changed to match the preferred movie version.

A detail shot showing the air brake closed and the necessary mod to the tile.

More construction detail of the underbelly.

And the final side by side with a wrinkled sky. So there you have it. Have I answered the question? Probably not. But I have one of each to cover my butt no matter which side of the fence you're on. Or in my case, straddling the fence. I just have to watch out for splinters.

Quoting T. Young Hey I dont know if I have commented here before but I would like to use some of your ideas, with a few modifications. I will give you credit for the inspiration. My snowspeeder had just fallen today and I decided to rebuild it a bit. So I will give you credit for the ideas. I really like your design.
I appreciate it. Of course you may use my designs. I'm glad to be able to inspire others. As long as you mention my name, you can use any of my ideas. I do the same thing.

I think that they are dirty white, yet that crashed one does look grey... so I don't really know what to say, what I can say however is that I really like your snowspeeders ;)

Very good debate. I say they can be either. Anyway, you put a superb amount of detail into both!

Both models are just about perfect. I don't think someone could wish for any more from a Snowspeeder. I imagine they would be white, because that would make good camouflage on Hoth. But since the Rebels aren't exactly the wealthiest people they might use grey. Who knows?

Quoting Jhayk' Sulliy That's a very good question. And the stills just raise further questions! In my mind, the Rebels would have just been using whatever they could get their hands on. It's not exactly like they could go down to any Air-SpeederMax, and buy whatever color they wanted. No, they had to buy off blackmarket, and then upgrade where they could afford to. So it could have easily been both, and that's what I'm going with: both!
Good point. I completely agree!

Quoting M<0><0>DSWIM ! Both versions are vast improvements over the original set but, OBVIOUSLY, the Snowspeeder is light gray, just like practically EVERY ship in the OT:)
I'm wondering if that has to do with how they had to film the models in space back then. The original BSG series is the same way. One of the few times you see something different is the cloud car against a blue sky. If that had to be filmed in space it would have probably been gray as well.

great design here dude, I like when someone can accurately resemble a model, in as tight a shape as possible, this really is one of the cleverest speeder designs I've seen...

It probably seems grey when it crashes because a light environment can make a shade seem darker than in a darker environment. It's probably the offwhite, but against snow white, it would look like a darker grey. Either way, it looks good to me. ^Blub^

Quoting E.K.O . Nice work, I just think they are a bit studdy, you should have added more tiling.
I needed the studs to hold everything together, and I thought adding tiles on top of what's there made the wings too bulky. Anyway, I think seeing studs is what Lego is all about! :) Thanks!

Quoting Christopher Baldacci White man. You gotta go with the white. It's for camoflauge. Any half-blind AT-AT could snipe a gray speeder out of the air!
That's exactly what I was thinking, if you're flying around in snow, you want to be white!

Quoting Elk Guard They look great side by side. I am partial to the gray one. Have you considered bley?! :)
Thanks! It is actually a combination of gray and bley because a few of the parts don't come in bley.

First, they are both awesome creations! Second, white seems logical thinking of camouflage. So, Id prefer the white one. The rest is all a standard movie inconsistency, imo. ~Marc

I think the white works best, especially since they were called Snow Speeders. Snow, polar bears, wampas, all white. Nice work!
