Panzerkampfwagen VIII Maus ( a german WW2 panzer / tank )
A Maus tank in 1/15 scale. 4200+ pieces, tracks only 1200 pieces. Length 70 knobs, width 30 knobs, heigth 30 bricks. Weight about 4.5 kg, has 6 M-motors, 2 batt. boxes, 2 receivers. Turret is indenpendent, no wires to the hull. Working suspension, 48 wheels in 12 bogies. Way too big and underpowered, as the real one ;) Since tracks ( 8 knobs wide ! ) takes almost all space in hull, space between tracks is 6-8 knobs only and is full of motors, gears, battery box etc.
About this creation

I found a youtube video about the only real Maus existing, saved in Kubinka tank museum:
This is what was survived from WW2. It is combined from V1 hull, which had no turret and a turret taken from destroyed V2.

YouTube: Mega tank video

Its quite difficult to make right angles to all surfaces, since mostly those are not default lego angles

The small ( 75mm ) gun. What for is this pea-shooter needed ?

Notice the Chromed exthaust pipes, which gives some sporty look. Thanks to Chromebricks!

Tank commander Darth Vader and his right hand Zurg. After Death Star destruction he bought this ;) Rebellions, beware!

Turret moved to service platform

Since there is about 1500 moving pieces on tracks and suspension, Hull sides can be opened up for maintenance

Track and suspension. The tracks are the most important feature of this tank.
Made of separate pieces with pain.
Secondly suspension and bogies close to original,
made of separate pieces with pain too...

Track and suspension, close lookup. Originally Maus was not able to turn around
in place, tracks too long and too close to centerline. And with this it is a pain
to turn around. Top speed was about 13 km/h off-road, a Cooper-test result of 2600m.
Normal soldier would outrun maus by foot !!!

Down under

The track, MausKetten, tier-10, price 82500. made of 66 2*8 elements, 1,05 meters long. weighing 0,9 kg.

All surfaces of this tank are made of separate panels that can be easily removed.
Here is turret side panel opened.

The whole turret side removed. Turret is quite full of stuff...

Turret back , access hatch to battery switch

Front hull top, access hatch to battery switch

Some panels removed from hull top

Front engine/gear access panel removed, internal parts are color coded, like gears here in red. Notice that tracks takes almost all space inside. Fitting 4 M-motors between tracks was a serious challenge. But after 10+ versions they are there ;)

Maus Control Unit ( MCU ): Joystick for turret, speedcontrol for tracks

Drive wheel and track piece

Drive wheel and track piece opened

Location of 32307 Technic, Axle Connector Block 3 x 6 with 6 Axleholes.

Size of my Maus, hull length about 55cm / 22inches

Upgraded Maus: barrels are now same colour as tank. End of the barrel now more realistic

Over the track there are some kind of "hooks". They are to install a special track pulling winch.

And a video of Maus:

Quite many people have asked FULL instructions. Here it is.

Quoting E D Thanks but your maus contains more than 4000 parts right... Do i need to custom buy every single part or can i buy a set? Thanks!
This is not a set, its my own creation. So you have to buy all the parts U don't have already. 400$-600$ only ;) At least 1 is built.

Quoting Tommy Styrvoky I think the 8:40 ratio could be changed for a 36z and 12 or 20? I don't own any of the 36z gears. It could improve the speed, also are you planning to install this into the maus ?
Hi, I'm playing with LDD trying to fit those XL-motors and still have a problem. The height of XL-motor is about 2mm too much. And i need those vertical support bars. I made another plan where XL-motors are in horizontal position, but then i had problem with those vertical bars. But research contitues ....

Quoting Tommy Styrvoky i fixed the problem with the drivetrain, it now has another 12:20 ratio in there. It could have 2 XLs and put out 240 N cm at 17.5 RPM.

Quoting guy who likes tanks Thanks for uploading the design but i had an issue with 24 pieces deleted. i'm wondering if they are important to the overall design and if they are, could you please tell us what they are? thanks :)
Looks like small shock absorber is not available anymore in LDD, there are 12 of them in suspension. And yes, they are very important to tank design ;)

I finished the XL version of the hull, it is mostly done but it will require some work with mounting the XL motors to the support structure. The power train is complete though. http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/391660 it Has 4 XL's as requested

Quoting Tommy Styrvoky i finally was able to get ldd to work but in version 3.0 and I made a physical copy of the drive gearbox and the final ratio of it is 1:5.001, 37 rpm and it has an output of 18.5 N cm, a stock Xl motor has a output without gearing of 14.5 N cm. to achieve a similar speed for rpm a 8:24 would give off 33.3 rpm and have 43.5 N cm of torque. ----- Yes, it roughly doubles the torque. Back drive-wheels has to take that torque or break... Weight distribution is another problem. Maus turret was some 55 tons, which made it back-heavy. And so it is with this. Motors should be as front as possible. Otherwise it will go nose up. 4*M = 44 Ncm. 4*L = 72 Ncm. 2*XL = 80 Ncm I was concidering 4*L too, but 2*XL goes well too. Let's see what you come up with ;) Of course 4*XL is the best choice ....

I will try to build a gearbox that can fit in the rear portion of the vehicle. Though it may take some time because i'm in the midst of finishing my tiger I and then i can use its XL's to test dimensions.

Quoting Ace Tacticz The LDD was not what I was expecting, but thanks anyway! But, so the LDD instrucions have all the "parts(panels, gun, etc)" you just have to put them together right?
What you can do, is to separate LDD-file to smaller LDD-files, like turret etc and then run building instructions for each. 99% of parts are there, at least ;)

Quoting Hansim Glck I love this thing, i'm really going to build this, thanks for building and posting it! I've got two questions: Why they motors have such different colours? Do they have different funktions or did you just do it for better view on the instruction? And the secound one: There is no discribtion of the tracks in you digital instruction, could you send the partlist for the tracks? Sorry for my questions but i love this one and i've got to have it:)!!!
Hi! motors are all same M-motors. some parts are coloured to give some visibility. Tracks: checks pictures, each track is made of 66 2x8 units, there are pictures of track details above. Two 2x8 units makes a basic set, you just repeat it 66 times and you have tracks ready! Check Soete Matthias MOC-pages: http://www.mocpages.com/home.php/103198 He has a copy of Maus done ;)

Quoting Tommy S. Yeah I have seen similar problems with XL's I will have to redesign the gearbox so it doesn't have those weak 12t bevel gears and will have to add a gear ratio probably a 5:1
The old type 8, 16 and 24 gears are weak, they just split in half when using XL-motor full torque. Newer versions are reinforced and takes more punishment ;)

I was looking at the specs for different motors and found this a M motor is 3Ncm, a L motor 6Ncm, and a XL is 14Ncm. so if you had one XL motor per track you would get double the power of 4 M motors not including the gearing. Also hopefully I will be able to use my computer this weekend and I might be able to mess around with the chassis.

Quoting Tommy S. The how much did it cost you to build both tracks in real life and I can't really run a LDD file because I can really use my computer. :( also the part you ar talking about is nicknamed the "hockey spring " and I have one in white. With the spring is it attached to the barrel or is it attached to the lower pivot.
Good! , The spring hole is attached to barrel axle. Then I angled the block for proper tension, use other holes for that. Cost of tracks? Some 1250 simple parts, about $50-$80

Quoting Tommy S. What did you use to minimize gun sway on the main gun that would be helpful for my tortoise and the price of the tracks were $825.00 because $82500. would get you a lot of Legos :)
There is a part not listed in LDD: x928cx1 Technic, Axle Connector Rectangular Triple Spring-Loaded. Its purpose is to create downward tension to barrel to make it steady.while tank is moving. Its connected to gun pivot point. Check the picture "The whole turret side removed. Turret is quite full of stuff..." its the orange 2x3 one.

Quoting Tommy S. Possibly enough room for a seperate moving 7.5 cm gun
It was originally meant to be a coaxial gun. Since 128mm was very slow to reload, designers had a ?brilliant? idea that 75mm would shoot meanwhile 1-3 shots just to annoy enemy. Or to be used for small targets.

Quoting Soete Matthias If U look the separate gearbox assembly, you see blue and green axle next to gearbox, they are motor axles. The upper blue has 2 gears But because the gear tooths are not matching, LDD refuses to put gear on place.... You will see other places too like this, so i have used odd colors to pinpoint LDD problems. I have designed the gearbox to be separate module for easy maintenance ;) I have had broken gears...

Very nice tank, one of the best i have ever seen. I am also making/upgrading my prototype tank, i am now at prototype 9, that means the 9th version(only big upgrades counted, otherwise it would be prototype 40). But it is a bit smaller, only 40cm(hull). Video: http://m.youtube.com/index?hl=nl&gl=NL&desktop_uri=%2F%3Fhl%3Dnl%26gl%3DNL#/watch?feature=plcp&v=ofiyfI1AixM I know the turret is a bit oversized, but i placed a battery box, 1 xl, 1M motor and a IR sensor in it and that takes very much space. I add 2 pics to show the wheel and track. But with these you cant build anything small ;) Drive wheel is simple, build on axle 12 length. I used M-motors, because XL's just dont fit in this tank ( its too small ) ! Gear reduction is about 1/5. Track is made of 2 2*8 units, you just build as many you need these. in the center of track are these guiding-tooths, road wheels run on sides. My road wheels are purely maus-styled.

Thanks for the comments! I knew somebody would like it ;) It took some 9 months to finish it. And its also quite fun to see it moving, not fast, but noisy when those huge tracks are rolling...

One word OMG! Okay that's three words... This is probaly the best Maus in Lego form I've ever seen. The details are amazing and the fact that it has treads and one color is a very big plus. If it was minifig scale it would be able to knock out any tank here on Mocpages. Really awesome
