This is the Imperial Class Star Destroyer Executor. It is my first captial ship. It has a little over 4000 parts and cost about $400... maybe more... hard to keep track of $$$ when you are obsessive. I looked at several other Super Star Destroyer designs starting with Lasse's and found that most looked really good on the outside but were prone to falling apart because of the overall size and stresses on the frame, and the lack of positive lock on underside panels in general. To combat that problem I used a large number of flats to distribute the weight across a larger surface internally and then used multiple brick with interlocking pins on top of those flats. This takes advantage of tolerance stackups to give the interface a tighter fit. (did I mention I am an engineer?) Very hard to install, probably un-fixable without tearing it apart if it breaks now. The engines are really neat, but they are heavy. The underside interface for the engines has gone through several iterations. I finally used a 3 point pining mechanism to insure they have a locked fit. The main frame structure now has a "Full Sandwich" stackup that is on average 4 bricks thick with dual top to bottom girder installed about every 16 studs to pin the sandwich together. I found after doing this, I could hang 10 pounds off at 5 feet (50 ftlbs!!!) with some creaking sounds.
I also made an attempt to add fiber optics to light the interior, but it really didn't have the effect I was looking for, so I stopped. With the red LED's and the rotator light I had, it looked like a portion of the executor was on fire and damaged while the red lights flickered. I was hoping more for a serene light as seen through portholes kind of look. Still a work in progress. There is an MLCAD file of this design, unfortunately, it's now out of date because of the continuing rework on the internal structure. I will try to get around to publish the drawings with all the latest mods, but I am side tracked with my latest MOC. http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/266859

For your lighting troubles, I recommend using either a white ro light blue LED to use with the fiber optics. This will give a better look to the viewport lights than red will.
Otherwise, the best Executor-class dreadnought that I have seen made from legos. |

It took about four months, but I spent about a month and a half waiting for parts to show up. I got a lot of my parts from places in the US, but I also wanted to order some direct from Lego. Both packages got stuck in Poland for about three weeks. |
