A CC-standard build, based off of the classic American diners and Art Deco movie theaters of the 1930s and 40s.
About this creation
It took a several months and a lot of bricks, but I finally finished my latest modular buildings: The Galaxy Diner and Empire Theater. Based on the classic American diners and Art Deco movie theaters of the 1930s and 40s, this takes up two baseplates with the diner being 8 studs narrower than a typical modular and the theater being 8 studs wider. The theater is loosely based on the cinema from 10184 Town Plan, but made to look more at home in New York instead of Miami Beach. The names were also chosen to be of the era and are not named for any specific buildings.
I'll start with the diner. It uses red and dark red for the stripes along with a lot of light bley rails.

The large skylight at the top allows in a lot of light.
Despite being small for a modular, it is still quite roomy. There is a full kitchen and seating for 16 minifigs - 4 at the counter, 4 along the windows, and 8 in the booths.
Moving now the the theater. This uses a lot of colors, the predominant ones being white at the base, medium dark flesh for the upper levels, and a mix of blue, medium blue, and dark blue for the detailing.
While the diner was a very straight forward build, this uses SNOT techniques everywhere. I needed a lot of jumpers and the new bricks with a stud on one side. You will notice that the two medium blue columns are cranked at 45 degree angles, and the cheese slopes on either side of the main sign are held together by Technic bricks and pins hidden by white tiles.

The back is definitely the back - I put all my focus on the front. This shows the balcony off the third floor and the spotlights at the top for special events.
This originally started as more of a mod of the cinema in the 10184 Town Plan. Both the ticket booth and marquee show definite inspiration from that while the rest of the building kept growing more ambitious.
The first floor contains a concession stand with popcorn kettle, soda machine, shelves for candy, popcorn warmer, and butter pump. There is also a fountain and two restrooms.

The second floor is unconventional in terms of how it handles the third floor. It was a pain to try and break the front facade due to all the SNOT work, so only two walls come off initially.
I have a bunch of Harry Potter minifigs after getting Diagon Ally for parts, so I made them into 3D posters. You can see a drinking fountain under the spiral stairs and the theater screen and curtain.
The third floor is for the projectionist, and contains the projector, a couch and table to sit and relax while the movie is going, and a door out to the balcony.

I love everything about this whole thing. The realism of the diner. The stack of red cups at the counter. I love that triangular colorful design on the top of the cinema. And bunch of other great details. |

Love all of the colors! The seats in the diner were great and I loved the checkered floor in it! The rounded shape really gives it that "diner" feel. I loved the exterier of the theater! Great usage of the 1x1 cheese slopes and the pattern of the colors was perfect! The stairs were great! I loved the foutain and the bathrooms! Great job on the acual theater part and the projector room. There was so much detail! I usually don't give comments like this but this seemed to deserve one. Great job again! |

Just beautiful! I'm a big fan of the art deco style, and this is just plain FUN to look at! The details are wonderfully rendered! My grandfather and 2 of my uncles were projectionists, so this hits home! Very, very well done! |
