Playable Hogwarts
Through all the many generations of Hogwarts Castles that have been produced by LEGO, there were really none that I thought were truly playable on a huge scale. I made this one for my little 9 year-old cousin who is a Harry Potter crazed fan. I deliberately did NOT use tiles on the floors so he could set up scenes he wanted. I also left rooms pretty bare so he could set them up the way he liked. I did make the stairs movable, and the front of the castle swings open in three sections so he could get in and play with all of it. I brought it to his house a week ago and stayed for 10 days. Needless to say he was really bummed when I had to pack it up and bring it home. Hey...I need the parts!

Wow, that is awesome now that you mention the stairs, I like how this works. BTW I just noticed that the windows in the great hall are on a side wall and not behind the headmasters chairs, but not like it matters I wouldn't be surprised if it was a function thing for playability, anyway, as I said earlier I think it is incredible.

Quoting Matt Garner This is a truly outstanding MOC; one that I only DREAM of making. Just one quick question: in the Grand Staircase bit, did you make the stairs rotate and move? If so, how did you do it? :)
Thanks. Yes, the staircases both pivot and line up with the other side. I used a Turntable 4 x 4 x 2/3 Top with Black Square Base part on the underside of the 8 x 8 plate and built up plates around it to make it look like a normal 8 X 8 brick. It holds just fine. I was actually kind of surprised when it worked. Thanks for asking! :)

Quoting chase muller This is...well...It needs its own word to describe how awesome it is, seriously nice job, the Harry potter movies are cool, but a bit too unrealistic, anyway this is still incredibly accurate to them and I especially like the easter egg Admiral Ackbar in the window. Maybe you should add Dumbledors office.
Thanks! I did have a place on the back for Dumbledor's office but ended up making it the room of requirement instead so my cousin would have a place to change around the way he wanted.

Quoting Caleb S where did you get the paintings on the wall?
Made them by setting up some scenes with minifigs, photographing them, then photoshopping to make look a little more like paintings. Then I printed them on a textured paper that looks a little like canvas, cut them out and made the frames.

Personally, I think Harry Potter was one of the most over-dramatized stories/movies ever. I cannot stand Harry Potter, the books, or the film adaptations. However, I have inevitably seen all the LEGO models and commercials for the films, and must say from a purely LEGO standpoint this is breathtaking. Everything about this is accurate and stunning, to a degree where I can give this five stars (heads) even though I hate Harry Potter. You are the first person to do that, FYI. So kudos to you. Quoting Henrik Hoexbroe Epic build! Lego should have launched a series of modular castle-sets, in order to achieve something as playable as your creation!
Yes, my point in building this. This one comes apart in four sections one end to the other: Great Hall, Portrait Hall, Clock Tower/ Stairs, Grounds/Bridge. And the front facade opening on each section is what made it really playable for my cousin. He loved that.

About 12 years ago the Catholic Church came up with 3 buzz words to challange us and call us into action (It was a major part of the bishops massisive fund raiser.) they were: time, talent and treasure. These are the three words that came to my mind as I enjoyed your entry: PLAYABLE HOGWARTS as I ate my supper (ironic because you begin with a banquet of LEGO food). TIME - a moc this size took hours, days and weeks to accomplish---trial and error, editing, changing and a steady hand! Talent in the way you researched all the LEGO offerings to the pop culture HARRY. TALENT in the way you looked at the movie making either mental notes or pen & paper notes! TALENT in the creativity you used (plus the talent of making your 9 year old cousin happy) in the details! Then finally TREASURE all the bricks in this must have cost a small fortune! so (lol) I understod your last comment --- "I needed the bricks!" (lol) I thought to myself I wonder if people out there realize the expense of being a LEGO Fan!
