An entry to Ian Spacek's wonderfully designed "Lord of the Rings Trilogy Contest, Round One: 'The Fellowship of the Ring.'" It was a terribly fun build, and I can't wait to see more entries to the contest! This build represents Lothlórien, the captivating elven realm where the Fellowship of the Ring sought respite, and were given gifts that would aid them on their quest. This 8x8 vignette is based off of the book and my own imagination of the legendary haven of the elves. Enjoy!
About this creation

This Lothlórien vignette pictures a gray and stately elfish tree, with a winding wooden staircase up its trunk. The elves of Lothlórien swing through the winding vines to greet the Fellowship, and part-way up the tree, rests an overgrown balcony where the queen of Lothlórien, Galadriel, will meet Frodo, Sam, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, and the other hobbits.

Surprisingly sturdy for the strangeness of it's construction, Lothlórien features some great details, all with minimal base overhang.

Here again, along with three other new minifigures, "The Yellowship of the Ring" strikes back. Two words: elf ears.

If you have a chance, stop by Ian's contest. There's plenty of time to enter!

I had a really fun time experimenting with curvature in this build. The staircase was difficult to simulate the rounded look, and this build wouldn't have been possible without the particular tree trunk curvature that acted as the foundation for all the details, minifigs, and greenery.
I'm really pleased with the way that the sand green balcony supports turned out. It's always fun mixing up the stud direction.

Of course, the requisite Brickforge Mushrooms on the top of the "roof" structure here. Also visible in this picture are the two branches separating from the tree trunk, and another Lothlórien elf hiding in the vines. Stylized vine credit, by the way, again goes to Mr. Kelso.

The ever-so unappetizing view of the backside of the vignette. Judges: just focus on the front and sides. Kapeesh?
Legolas and Gimli

And, to close, a semi-artistic shot of Galadriel, looking out over the beautiful elven forest of Lothlórien.

In the book it says the trees ARE grey. |
|
|
OK, I've already told you what I don't like (most of which are just a bunch of stupid nit-picky things). Galadriel looks like a frog, the tree is gray, and the elves are wearing too much white (if those are too nit-picky, don't let me know). HOWEVER, I think the fact that you were able to pack all of this into an 8x8 is really cool. The presentation (as always) is really crisp, and the figs (besides the frog and the elves) is great. 97/100 |

MOST TREE's ARE GREY. 1oo/1oo |
|
|
Well, I know I have already said a lot of nit-picky critiques already (like the fact that Galadriel looks like a frog, and the fact that the bark is gray) but this is a really great MOC for and 8x8. 96/100 |

The tree: Excellent! This MOC has good chances to win! (100/100). The minifigs: Some of them don't really look like them (for example Legolas and Sam) and Galadriel could have a decal or an other torso: (70/100). The plants: They are just perfect and in harmony with the trees! I probably will never be as good in LEGO as you are now!!! (100/100)
All in all: (92/100) |

Excellent build Paul. The tree itself (particularly the top) seems slightly awkward shape-wise, but then again what you've attempted to do here with the "snotting" is absolutely incredible. The score I give you may seem strange, but it may possibly help in the long run. Your score: 98/100. I hope this doesn't feel unreasonable to you, but I couldn't decide between two different scores so I shot somewhere in the middle. |

Actually, Tolkien doesn't say his name in the book, but there is a small description of a creature climbing up the tree that Frodo is sleeping in. The fact that it is Gollum is implied. I don't think he is in Lothlorien in the movie. Oh, Galadriel says, "CROAK!!!!" |

Wow Paul, my gaze dropped when I saw this, not because i don't think its good - its brilliant! My gaze dropped because my super idea for this comp will probably not uphold to the stunning level of techniques and details you have here. A huge weldone! I think your stairs will be fine, as they are not stud overhang. Keep an eye out for my next post, it takes spiral staircase and tree to a whole new level ;) ~Thoy |

i didn't know that trees were gray! (he he) just kidding!! great job Paul!!! Look out your window. I assure you that 95% if not more of the trees out your window will be some shade of gray.

Also, how did you do the accent on the 'o' in Lothlorien? That is cool. Great work, Paul! I am sneaky. I went into my word processing program and inserted my special accented "o" into my computer program document before copying and pasting it into the word "Lothlorien" whenever it appeared in the HTML of my MOCpage post.

Um, very good but I don't think that the stair overhang is allowed. That would depend on you point of view. We'll let the judges decide about that.

FINALLY!!! Great work! As a judge, I must say, one of the best creations so far in the contest! Very creative! But I do think Galadriel looks like a frog. Oh yeah! Where's Gollum? Wasn't he in this scene? Ugh. I know. With those lips you can just see her croaking and ribbiting around the treetops. What can I say. Oh, and Gollum might have been in the movie scene, but I don't recall him in the book. I could be wrong. |

Absolutely brilliant, and probably a sure winner but if those stairs aren't 'stud overhang' I don't know what is... but 10 out of 10 for the model and I have only one more thing to say - long live the yellow heads! |

Wow. I can't think of anything else to say. This is by far the best entry, and I am timid to enter mine now. :) I love the height and the way you did the stairs.
