A brief (yeah right) history of the middle ages.

ok everybody! its nice to have built this... I had serious builders block until last night at around 10:30 I realized that i had a Nat. Geographic Atlas on the Medieval World. then it hit me: build something from each chapter or so. all my info is from there. :)
first we can see the fall of the Roman empire to the Vandals (Germanic Tribes). this was the Official "Start" of the Middle Ages.

secondly we see King Justinian of Byzantine with a soldier celebrating the completion of the Church of Holy Wisdom in 537 A.C.E. I included a miniature to show you what it looks like... it really is red!

third, we can see a representation of "The Black Death" or Bubonic Plague. the plague was carried from the Mediterranean to Constantinople and then brought everywhere by trade routes. the poor soldier is asleep and the rat has carried an infected flea in!

next, we can see Muhammad giving his "Farewell Sermon". I really don't like how the sun came out on this one but its the best I've got so whatever. also , I chose not to actually make a Muhammad figure due to fears of insulting Islam. At this time christianity and islam were very big. thus the crescent and cross on the sides. SO i guess Jews didn't give much thought to it yet.

on our fifth floor we can see a mini-castle. this is supposed to represent the first building of castles in Western Europe (France, Spain, etc.) in about 800 A.C.E.

on our next floor, which actually happened in 721, prior to the previous floor, we can see Duke Odo of Aquitaine routing a Muslim force at Toulouse. this was the first recorded victory over Muslim Invaders.

Next we can see a viking. I'll just call this viking time:
1. in 842 and 851 vikings attacked London
2. in 841 Dublin is founded as a Viking base and slave market.
3. in 860 over 200 viking ships poured into Constantinople
blah blah blah blah blah. Vikings. that's my point, friends.

Nearing the turn of the millennium, we can see Germany's Henry I defeat and convert the Wends, pagan people of eastern Europe in 929. Germany also defeated the Magyars (Hungarians)at Lechfeld in 955.

Next we can see When the Church started prosecuting Heretics, near 1000 A.C.E.
We can also see the beginning of the First Crusade, represented by the soldier there.

Next we can see Henry V of Germany, who became the First Holy Roman Emperor. we can also see the truce between Saladin and King Richard the Lionhearted in 1192. King Richard died in 1199 during a siege in France.

Finally we reach the Renaissance, where many painters became famous. we also see Jon of Arc here, and we also see an early cannon, which was first used in 1326 by Florentine.

History lesson much? hahaha, well I hoped you enjoyed it as much as I did building it!
Oh and here is some of my favorite figs and 2 fig less versions of layers:

Excellent build and a fantastic idea -- I may steal this and do a "history of Glomshire" version just for fun! I love how you picked a pivotal moment from each chapter to present. It's brickhistory! (Ok, please don't kill me for that one, I just had to say it.) Well done!
hahahaha thank you! you have no idea how much your comment means! thank you to everyone else as well and thank you to the judges for the scores and for hosting this amazing contest! |
