This is my entry into the 2011 MOC Athalon.....category is:
12. Are you not a little bit old for this?!:
Build a model which features one or more Duplo-elements - these elements have to be an essential part of the build and the more elements are integrated, the better! (No size restrictions)

In a remote location, a Pelican is in the hangar for repairs.

Master Chief had called in for reinforcements. A pilot known as Commander Phipson of the 182nd Clone brigade, 32nd squadron taskforce, reinforced was called in to fly the lead Pelican.

Unbeknown to all, Phipson was a rookie who had never flown an aircraft a day in his life. While flying to the rendezvous point, Commander Phipson couldn't help but moon his wingman in-flight. Unfortunately this led to his demise as the aircraft went nose first into the ground.

The maintenance crew struggles with repairs while the relief pilot oversees the maintenance actions.

With the hangar roof removed.

The crew in action replacing the cockpit. (AKA I didn't have the exact color pieces that Chris used in the OG, hence the backstory).

Check out those Snap-on tool boxes! (I actually own a blue one, but most recognize the red as being the ultimate tool-box color.)

Taking a tool out of the drawer.

This is just a separate pic to show that the Duplo Pelican is real and fully built. This is as much a faithful reproduction of Chris' build as possible which can be found HERE
Commentary:
First of all I would really like to thank my team for putting up with me. I really do have the greatest team in the MOC A's because we support each other fully no matter what happens through out the month of March. It's great to be back with Josh and Hans, and I'm looking forward to Louis and Andrew blowing your minds shortly.
Big thanks goes to Hans who immediately befriended me upon his arrival to the pages....your friendship means a tremendous amount to me. It's so great to see you become one of the great builders of our community...keep it up man!
A HUGE thanks to Josh who has been holding it down for our team this year. You're an excellent builder, and I look forward to watching you grow continuously through the years!
Another HUGE thanks to Chris who puts up with miserable BS to put these things together. Too much drama goes into these comps....but we all appreciate you sticking through it for us.
Yes I am DRUNK. No seriously, go look at Hans' MOC if you don't believe me. Here I am
True story: As I was building this, I stole my daughters' bucket of Duplo to recreate the Pelican. My daughter Kairi saw it in the living room and said, "HEY! That's my LEGO!" I told her not to touch it, as I was building something and would give it back ASAP. I went and got my other daughter Caelin from the Jeep and let her go inside. I went and checked the mail and came back in......only to hear a large rattling and the Duplo bucket to be missing!!! I was like "Kairi!!!! I told you not to mess with Daddy's build!!!" I went in and rescued the bucket of Duplo and scrounged whatever I could of the build while she cried. She got in trouble for this build. LMFAO.....how sad is that?! :P

So it's not enough to fend off the kids from using your Lego, but you have to go and steal theirs? How much further can you fall? |

Who knew that Phipson's most popular moc, and arguably his best, was crafted in Area 51 itself. Funny stuff. |

Nice work. I've hidden the build that I'm doing for this category so that my kids don't find out. But since they are always "decorating" my minifigs, I think its a fair trade for once. God bless all the parents who toil to make great builds while fending off the curiousity of their kids! |

Stormbringer pointed out that he didn't think the Pelican is connected to LEGO, but it is. If you notice the dark bley 2X2X3 slopes are actually the jack-stands that hold up the aircraft. You can see one jack-stand clearly in the pic of the maintenance personnel grabbing a tool, as I had to remove the Pelican to get a clear shot. There are a total of 3.....2 for the wings, one for the rear. |

Quoting Stormbringer .
So you are allowed to combine Lego and Duplo (not connected together of course).
Actually the Pelican is connected to the jack-stands. Sorry, I didn't point that out in the story and I don't think I got a clear shot of them.

Quoting A Monkey
On their spare time, the engineers at Area 51 pick flowers and tend to the garden.
In Hawaii I worked on a flight line where you could walk outside and a few feet from the hangar jump into the bay. Of course there were sharks, so it was ill advised. I've worked in quite a few hangars world-wide, and I can assure you that flowers right off the tarmac isn't all that odd. LOL |

Yes, you are too old for this, but you're in good company. Great build, and ticklishly funny homage to the second greatest build here (after The Hand, of course). I guess that makes you the drunken clown in our sandbox. |

Stealing your daughter's bricks - shame on you. I hope she steals your booze in return, hahaha!
Now back to your entry. Great idea to integrate DUPLOŽ as something strange and alien into a regular MOC. Best idea for this category so far. |
