The Tower of Babel, built with obsidian stone from the ancient Sumeric mines of Ur-safel-kanim. The building was destroyed in an earthquake (6241 BCE) just 2 years after its completion leading to the modern day Tower of Babel myth.
The model is based on recently discovered architectural plans. (See the Archeological Journal of Ancient Artifact's January issue for more details)

Exceedingly gothic. I could well imagine this as the home of humanity's greatest tyrant or darkest religion, or both. Very grand indeed.

@mister bones, your view of Christian beliefs is very skewed, most Christians believe that the earth and creation are about 10,000 years old or more. It really all comes down to the argument of "are the days of creation that are referred to in the Bible literal days or a longer period of time?" And at everyone else hating on the Christian belief of Babel, The Holy Bible is the only solid piece of evidence given in that time period, some might say that the layers in the crust say it dates back farther then how the Bible lines up with it, but giant floods(Noah's Flood) and volcanic eruption can cause massive amounts of sediment to form rapidly, giving the appearance of many layers of crust. BTW the creation is excellent I just don't agree with the description that's all. |

The parts you used are so "common" and the result is so "uncommon"... WOW!!! Tremendous work. The design without the texturing could be quite simple but the final result left me speechless. I learnt a lot today, again. COngrats for the quality of your pics, too. It is hard to get good pics with black bricks. At last (I say it here), your software about spheres inspired some French guys and I'm using one of them right now. Thank you SO much for helping us -little builders- to improve our technics. Respect. |

That something was 100% bull
Well Arthur after making a mistake like that (which I do all the time as well) you took the corrective steps to fix it. Top marks for that. Also as far as getting "carried away" with the intricate detail, I definitely believe you did a fantastic job. It is perhaps the best non-sci-fi greebles I have seen in a long time. Next time just get your facts right though...;) |

Sorry. Real sorry. But I made the entire thing up.
This will make it sound worse: I had never intended to build the Tower of Babel. It actually started out as a black gothic castle that was sort of modeled on Vlad the Impaler's (whom Dracula is based upon) castle (I think its Hunyard castle?) I was going to call it Dracula's castle. (Thats why there's lava/fire inside and outside the MOC). As I built and built and built the entire thing got out of control. It turned into an exercise in making the most intricate patterns within the smallest spaces. The name was given post-build. When I posted it I realized that I needed to write something. That something was 100% bull: the obsidian mines, the city, the journal.
For the record its not the first time I've done this. The spaceship I built, some of the mosaics, etc. are complete falsehoods. I suspect that it won't be the last.

Whoa... nice build! I do understand those who are claiming offense at your write-up though... you are, of course, entitled to your own beliefs, but labeling a bible passage as nothing more than myth will garner some angered responses. Still, slightly insensitive write-up aside, this is a great build, and I'd love to see more like it. |

This is an aesthetically perfect MOC. Kudos on the build. But, I strongly disagree with this--"The building was destroyed in an earthquake (6241 BCE) just 2 years after its completion leading to the modern day Tower of Babel myth." Just because the Tower of Babel was destroyed by an earthquake does not mean that the earthquake was not the calamity described in the Bible. God could have used an earthquake to punish the incredibly wicked people living at that time. How do you know it is a myth? |

Although you say that you didn't mean to insult anyone's religion you still called it a myth, you could have just left that part out! And I totally believe in the biblical story. And BTW to all you out there saying that it looks too modern a lot of archeological finds suggest that humans started out advanced and became less advanced. Read this article he explains it.

I was just thinking that I had too many black bricks since they are beginning to overflow the drawer they are in. Then I saw this, and after I huddled in a corner with my blankie for a while, I realized that I don't have anywhere near enough black. Excellent work!
I had been saving up pieces for this project for close to three years. There are parts from pick-a-brick Orlando, Legoland California, Legoland Windsor, just to name a few places I've travelled to in order to get quantities of parts. |

What a beautiful piece of art. This goes so far beyond a MOC that it must be deemed art. You Sir, are a genius with the brick. 6241 BCE huh? Well, I know folks that would tell you nothing was here more than 6000 years ago because the bible says so. They also think the dinosaurs existed alongside man, if they even admit they existed. But enough of that nuttiness. I am going to finish this comment so I can look at the stunning creation you have made again! |

I think you meant to say:"If you AGREE it would be best to say "story" rather than "myth". I have built cathedrals, temples, mosques, and shrines. I build them because they are architectural wonders. I build without regard to religion and/or the meaning behind the building. Sorry if I offended you. It was not my intent. BTW: Please cross check my facts with your spiritual advisor and get back to me on the validity of what I've written. |

Mighty darn fine.
He's talking about the Christian fable of the tower of Babel.
A meeting place for all the people of the earth, supposedly god destroyed it and split the people of the earth and made them speak all different languages.
When in reality it was probably built by slave workers, and people saying it was god destroying it in anger, are just living off the reality that these people had no clue what a fault line was, let alone where it could be.
As the mine for the obsidian was relatively close by, they would have easily put it on a subterranean fracture.
Nature beats God any day. :-D
Very nice representation, and amazing use of parts and techniques. |
