2011 MOCAthalon entry for category "Old Master" by team "Moist Towelettes".
About this creation
Moist Towelettes entry for "Old Master" in the 2011 MocAthalon.
Leonardo da Vinci's Leda and the Swan (after Cesare da Sesto's copy from the lost original).
Next to the real thing. The referenced work is executed in brunaille, which combined with the dark shading is brutal to do in Lego at small resolutions. A larger rendering was contraindicated by the time constraints. The chief pain is the lack of brightness resolution near black (unlike white which has very light gray, light gray, tan, and dark tan within a stone's throw).

I extensively used two tiers of plates in an effort to bring in dark brown and old brown,
at possibly small resolutions which are not made or accessible in those colors. Large plates of the rare colors are placed below and are selectively covered by small plates
of common colors. Needless to say, making a change requires a lot more shuffling, and my fingers hurt now. So thanks for THAT Hans. (Teach me to listen to you and join the MOCA.)
Note this is not the entire work, shown below. For this entry, I zoomed in on the content most appropriate for this community.

This was indeed produced by hand, and, as with my first mosaic, I did not enjoy it. Never want to do another. I went for this category first to get it over with, and hopefully enjoy the rest of the month. Grrr...
Muchas gracias to the judges and Sterlings for organizing this finger numbing shindig.

With apologies to Cesare da Sesto, I'd like to correct my comment below. If this painting is darker than Da Vinci intended, it is almost surely because of time and suboptimal storage conditions provided by its caretakers over the years. |

As brilliant as the original! Simply: Score = 5 |

Nice one Tom! Did you consider framing it with tile or plate?, it might have put it over the top. I'm sure you won't need it in terms of score, just wondering. Great subject matter. |

I'm not a very big fan of classical art (I'm too stupid to appreciate it:), but I gotta say, this looks absolutely beautiful! BTW, don't listen to anyone talking about PG-13 stuff: this is not some vulgar creation; it's ART! |

Your mosaics are unmatched for accuracy by everyone except maybe Sean Kenney himself.
Now that comparison is a compliment, and I thank you kindly. |

The swan is Zeus in disguise, and he only pursues the loveliest. One of their 4 offspring is Helen of Troy. You know, the one the unit of beauty, the milliHelen, is named for. (A milliHelen is the amount of beauty required to launch 1 ship.) |

You can't get much for perfect than this in creating a mosaic, extremely accurate. I've never seen the painting, so I entered the page with a really different idea of what it was going to be. |

This painting is the reason I am called Leda. Thank you so much for turning my favourite painting of all time into a true masterpiece in my favourite medium of all time Lego. Stunning work, if only we could give higher than 5... 5 very well deserved points. Now go dip those precious fingers in some warm oil and look after them! |

Agreeing with W. Mark down there that it does seem a little dim. Any idea whether the actual painting was a fresco?
I did not take the time now to read the full story, but it does seem interesting. The original, which was a painting, was lost. One never knows what happened in translation by the copier, who I'm sure was also a gifted painter, if not a master. |

Great work Tom. Agreeing with W. Mark down there that it does seem a little dim. Any idea whether the actual painting was a fresco? That might explain the dimness on the actual painting. Excellent work over all. The texturing on the face is really nicely done. I must say that you beat me to the mosaic. I have been working on one for a couple months now. Leave it to you to beat me to the punch. Fantastic work. |

I should clarify that while it seems tan would suit Leda more (both hue and brightness), tan and dark tan alone are not enough resolution. The grays have more flexibility, but also impose on the outcome.

It does seem a bit dimmer than the original, but otherwise every detail seems perfect.
That was required in order to equalize the contrast between the lighter and darker sections. A fundamental limit of low res lego mosaics. |

You may want to make it PG-13 for the holy rollers though. Don't want to see this beautiful MOC suffer from lack of tolerance.
This CFOL, at least, has a respect for art. This is a wonderful mosaic conversion of a great painting. It does seem a bit dimmer than the original, but otherwise every detail seems perfect. |

That is something I would do if it was not the MOCA. Putting things "over the top" is the least of my problems here. I have been explicitely warned to tone back my builds here as a strategic, resource allocation, matter. Thanks for the comment. |

Actually, right now, I cannot imagine a bigger fool than myself. I am also going to rarely break form and be serious for just 1 moment. I will definitely NOT PG13 a classic work of art. If this is done for me, I will delete my account. I am actually presuming that Sean does not need me to make this point or be patronising about it. Apologies in any case. |
