This board game accompanies Creationary. I made it for the times Matt and Suzuko, friends of my wife and mine, come over for game night.
About this creation

Rewind to Christmas, 2010. Among other gifts, I received Creationary, one of the new Lego games. It's essentially Pictionary with Lego. You roll a dice for a category, build something, and everyone guesses. The game includes suggestions for points systems. It's a nice idea, but it was lacking something.

We needed a gameboard to to complete the game! I borrowed elements from Cranium and a team version of Pictionary we play in the rules I created. I also followed the basic locations of The Lord of the Rings.

You begin in a little village I laughingly call "The Shire."

You won't see any Ents, but there is a forest.

The third region is fairly bland - I was thinking of the approach to Mordor.

The path through Mordor leads straight up Mount Doom, where one player will claim victory.

Let's see some portions of a game. First, roll the dice. The dice will tell you a category. In our game, if you rolled the gray tile, you had to make up and write down an object to build. The x2 tile meant you had to choose a more difficult card. (That mainly mattered to our wives, who dreaded it!)

The spinner tells you how far you move, should someone guess what you built. We limited the guesses to 3 per person.

Make your first move!

The orange squares are all stopping points. To advance past an orange square, you have to either 1) guess an opponent's build, or 2) advance with a teammate. To pick a teammate, use the team spinner. Then, each team will have one person build for the other. The first team to guess will advance.

Claim your victory on Mount Doom! Depending on the competitiveness of the game, moving through Mordor can be tough. People may choose not to guess when you build, and may be poor teammates. It's all part of the game! However, when we played, everyone played nice. Matt won.
Notes: We've played through this game once. It was much better than Creationary alone. It is very open to modification. I like the idea of adding a build timer, but the ladies were opposed to this change.
Some other thoughts I've had: build a case or a closing top, make it bigger, use minifigs for game markers, make it fit in the box. I'm not sure I'll get to any of these changes, but let me know if you do!
I interviewed our friends after the game. I can't repeat what Suzuko said, but Matt said, and I quote, "It was a thrill ride from start to finish!"

I've recently purchased creationary. I'd be curious if you would recommend adding any bricks to the existing configuration or if you like to try to limit yourself to what was included. I'd love an e-mail back at dreinho@gmail.com |

...Wes, do you have a MOC-athalon team?
Unfortunately, I do not. Alas, I'm afraid I will not. My family size will be increasing in March, and I don't feel like I can help out a team at the moment. Next year, though! |

Sorry I'm not commenting on the MOC right now, I will later - Wes, do you have a MOC-athalon team? We have three talented TFOLs so far but no AFOLs... can you join in the ride? Possibly you could email me at: flareicious@gmail.com
We're looking forward to your response :) |

Its great but instead of your board marker being a colored cylinder it should be a microfigure.
Yep, I never thought of that. Fact is, I only gots one of them. Good idea for future versions, though. |

My wife got me creationary for xmas as well. We played it once... once. She gets frustrated easily and thought it wasn't very fair for me to play. Glad you all had fun! ~ Chris.
One aspect of my rules addressed this "unfairness" factor. With the teammate selection spinner, you are not always stuck with the same excellent or lousy builder. Otherwise, yes, better builders do better. But good guessers have 3x a better chance of winning a four-player game! |

That's probably the first time ever those two ideas have aligned. I'm glad you enjoyed viewing this. Now go make your own! |

Reading through this put a big smile on my face. Sadly, I've got no one willing to play boardgames with :(
Aww, your comment put a big ol' sad face on mine! Bright side: less board games means more MOCing! (Game night inevitably means another night with no Lego for me.) |

Now I am dying to know did you WIN the game?
It sure looks like you did.
Loved both the lava spill and the waterfall!
I just may buy this for the pieces!
Thanks for the show!
I did not win the game. I was closest to Mount Doom when Matt won, if that counts for anything. |
