About this creation
Welcome to Brickvention '11, Melbourne, Australia! Allow me to show you guys around. We had double the number of FOLs displaying this year compared to last and there were many amazing creations. Let's get stuck into it :)
(Where possible I've tried to cite the builder's name but alas I've missed a few so if I've left anyone out or if there needs to be any corrections let me know).
Ahh, the serenity of setup day...

No screaming kiddies and irate parents...

...yet

The build in the bag finalists.

Timed sort in progress.

Peter's crazy skyscapers using crazy (rarely used) parts and colours.

Kevin's chainsaw which was a commission work.

Centuri Chan's (yes, I thought that was the coolest name I've EVER heard too) chessboard,

and sushi sculpture.

Ricky's mountain military base, complete with train.

This massive pirate-themed table was a collaboration. oh look, a lonely pirate ship is being chased by many imperial flagships!

Hah ha- that rockwall won't save you brigands!

Oh noes! I mean-IT'S A TRAP!!

Rob's groovy pirate base:

Sue Ann's Creator houses layout:

This awesome castle layout won Best in Show. It was by Kevin Hall.

You see it here unpopulated with hundreds of minifigs (I took the oppurtunity to take pics during set up time).

Paul's huge spaceships. Commence drooling!

This one in particular was a humungous hit with the kids on public day. It got many "WHOOAAAA!"s...

Aaron's miniland-scale Ninja ambush:

David built this cool space tower (which I failed to capture completely in one shot) part of which hung over the edge of the display table. His style is cool too; he explained to me he doesn't start with an overall plan but the creation just grows as he builds it, ending up with a flowing and organic structure. Way cool.

Sue Ann's Fabuland display! Impossiblee to feel sad looking at this :)

See the bird in the plane? I HAD THAT!!

Tim and Mike's "Ararat 1972" train and town collaboration (winner best collab in show). Two things here: note the black vertical backgrounds that help the buildings to stand out? genius. Also, the trains here and elsewhere at Brickvention were SERIOUSLY COOL! I think I might be turning into a trainhead...don't tell anyone though...

David's model of the Titanic engine room with Power Functions and schematics.

Aaron again, this time with his working water features:

Part 2 coming soon. Stay tuned!

Yes he used a small pump to move the water and built the Lego creation around it :)

I noticed that the interior of the building you guys held this in looks very ornate with nice woodwork on the inside. Is this a special town hall or a hotel?
Spot on man, I forgot to mention it was held at the Melbourne Town Hall. Heritage-listed building.

I went to this, spent an hour and a half in line, but it was great and so worth it, so packed inside though, this was the setup day so there was very few people there, on the public day it was so packed you could hardly move. |
