The Capture of Rome on September 20, 1870 was the final act of the Italian Unification(Risorgimento, or "The Resurgence)when Rome and the last Papal States were annexed to the Kingdom of Italy.
About this creation
After the Fall of the French Empire and it's protection the Pope brought a total of 13,157 Zouaves-foreign Catholic voluenteers- to protect Rome against the Italian Army of 50,000 troops.

The Pope said surrender would come only after his troops had put up enough resistance to make it plain that the take-over was not freely accepted. The Aurelian Walls around Rome was breached at Porta Pia was breached and Italian Bersaglieri troops stormed the city and captured it.

In the event 49 Italian soldiers and 19 Papal Zouaves died and until the Concordat of 1929 was signed the Popes remained "Prisoner in the Vatican" until the Vatican City-State was created.
