Built for the Brick Architect 2010 Competition, here is my vision of the Minifig scale all-action house.
About this creation
This is a house built in the modernist style and lived in by an active family. Where are they then ?

A-ha! Well, on these warm summer evenings (like the ones we've all forgotten about round about now..) they like to open up the doors and mess around in the garden. Dad stokes the barbeque while Mum enjoys a glass of wine. Their daughter tries to have a swim but her little brother is being annoying..
'Stop scaring your sister and put that scooter away!'
Meanwhile the dog is having a frolic on the lawn.

It all looks so peaceful from the front. If you can guess the artistic influence of the front door design without scrolling down, award yourself some points (it's not Piet Mondrian.)

This is a family who like their 20th Century art. Dad takes a break in the lounge. On the wall is a print of 'Yellow Red Blue' by Wassily Kandinsky. Stand back and squint a bit. It is. Oh well, please yourselves..

Every house should have a glass staircase..

The rear doors all fold back to reveal the lounge with TV, sofa and a fantastically uncomfortable designer chair. You'll need to be a committed Modernist to sit on that. The lights are from an old 12V train set.

A view of the house from above. The design is my own, but anyone who knows their 1930s Modernist architects can spot the influences..

And a view from the rear now that the family have gone back in and closed the doors. That boy still hasn't put his scooter away and they've forgotten the dog! Poor little guy.

The fully furnished lower floor, with bookcase, TV, sofa, chair, Dad and boy in the lounge and a kitchen with sink, cupboards, worktop, cooker and fridge. By the table there's a Rothko print. Dead easy to do!
The front door design is a simplified version of part of a 1920s film set designed by Robert Mallet-Stevens. But you knew that..

The upper floor, with three bedrooms, office and bathroom. The boy's room is tidy for once..

The roof and upper floor module (with all the lights attached) you can lift out. Notice the shirts hanging in the parents' wardrobe.. finally a use for old 'hands in pockets' Minifig torsos!

Some overall views of the house. Apologies for the variable condition of my white bricks. Some of them are 40 years old..
Yes, that is a palm tree.. err.. if you like trees you've come to the wrong guy! Try the creations of Tom Simon or Thoy Bradley for arboreal magnificence. Both of my green pieces are in this picture..

As you were, people!

Building this was fun and I hope you like it, especially if you're judging!

Reminds me of Miami! Great design, and any MOC with a babe in the pool gets high marks off the bat! A lot of really nice touches in here, namely the wiring, scooter out back, pool, use of what looks like Storm Trooper Heads for knots in the palm tree. Excellent work! |

It's so neat, tidy and very modern! The interior details are great. Two storey houses are tricky beasts, but you make it look easy mate! Excellent Work! |

It's quite uncommon to see a really well-designed house on MOCpages, especially one which put a lot of cool vintage parts to good use. And any MOCs quoting Kandinsky is a winner in my book :-)

Very cool design, and I love the lights! I like shiney and bright things.....now, are those Lego lights? They look like them.
Yes, they're from an old 12V train set, no 7740. Thanks for the comments. |

wow! i did nt expect this! i love it nick! it s quite simply beautiful and ambitious, i don t know much about architecture style, or notorious architects, but, it s superb! the interior, the lights, i love the small red windows, they re no longer availlable now, i d love it if you could use all glassed windows, but, i guess you don t have them, a shame! you re a great house designer as well, you re really filled with talent are nt you! great work! the wiring was a bit distracting, but, for a first attempt, it s understandable, now, i don t know what to expect from you anymore, truly exiting! excellent work nick!
Thanks Frank! Happy New Year! |

Nice one Nick. Love the glass front with the light behind, and the door (the influences I learned about here, thanks). But I thought pools were being phased out in this greener, leaner world. There are some items missing: is someone very prompt about removing the dog's grass grenades, and as before, the garden has been left too sparse given the condition of my back. I take it from your generous comments you are leaving that to me and Thoy? I am skeptical about the glass staircase. I recently saw one of those on House Hunters International, and it made me cringe. Particularly with small kids around. Now that you've mastered the Rothkos and Kandinsky, can we expect a Jackson Pollock from you next? (And to make it authentic, I assume you know how you must place the parts for that.)
Thanks Tom. Yes, he's a clean dog isn't he? As for greenery, I will leave that to you and Thoy. Now, to pick up some small multicoloured pieces and fling them around.. |
