This is an 1888 Clapp and Jones First Size Steam Fire Engine. The firm of Clapp and Jones was among the leading builders of steam fire engines in the late Nineteenth Century. In a factory in the City of Hudson, New York, along the Hudson River, Clapp and Jones built over 600 steam fire engines that went to fire departments throughout the Northeast.

About this creation

Mertilew R. Clapp and Edward D. Jones built their first steam fire engine in 1862. Clapp previously worked for the Silsby Manufacturing Company of Seneca Falls, New York, when that firm built its first steam fire engine, “The Neptune” in 1856.

Clapp and Jones Steam fire engines came in six sizes. First size weighed 8500 lbs and could pump an impressive 1000 gallons per minute. Second size weighed around 6000 lbs and could pump around 800 gpm. Third size weighed around 5000 lbs and could pump around 700 gpm. All three of these sizes were horse drawn.

Fourth size steamers weighed around 4000 lbs and pumped around 600 gpm. Fifth size weighed around 3000 lbs and pumper around 500 gpm. These two sizes were available as hand drawn or horse drawn. Sixth size steamers were hand drawn and weighed around 2500 lbs. They could pump around 400 gallons per minute.

In December 1891 Clapp and Jones merged with the Button and Blake of Waterford, New York, the Ahrens Manufacturing Company of Cincinnati, Ohio, and the Silsby Manufacturing Company of Seneca Falls, New York. The new company was named the American Fire Engine Company. At the time it was the largest builder of steam fire engines in the world. It was the forerunner of American LaFrance. BFD552@Gmail.com.

Believe it or not, this was the most difficult model for me to build. I have been working in this for most of the year. This required the most research since I really knew nothing about steamers. Fortunately, I live close to two museums with Clapp and Jones steamers so I could study them close up.
