This is my MOC of Airwolf, a state of the art mach 1+ attack helicopter. It is from the 80’s TV show Airwolf. The LEGO model has opening doors retractable guns, retractable landing gear and detachable ADF (All Directional Fire) pod. The cockpit seats 3 Minifigures, is incredibly detailed and has a Dominic Santini Minifig at the radar station and a Stringfellow Hawke Minifig at the flight controls. The only flaws are that the ADF pod doesn’t retract (I would have made it retractable but I couldn’t figure out how to), the tail is red instead of Black/white (Fixed! See bottom pictures), and the part the guns and wheels retract into is 2 studs too long (it was necessary to fit both parts). Other than those flaws the chopper is an exact replica of Aiwolf in LEGO.
(Notes): After these pictures where taken I have replaced the in air refueling hose (It’s that thing on the left of the nose) it looks more authentic now. I have also lengthened the tail by two studs, it was too short before. I have updated pictures below documenting these improvments and many, many more!
About this creation
Airwolf MK I
This is the first build, the one in the picture above is at the bottom.

Updated pics:
Airwolf MK II
These are the latest pics of my Airwolf MOC, I have done some modifications to the tail and completely rebuilt the rear end of the main body.

This is my vavorate pic of the choper, it just looks so epic in this shot.
/ / / / / / / /

The guns also do not fully retract, just the holder for them does. This is because the gun barrels are too long to retract, they solved this in the show by making them telescope in and out but there is no way to do that in LEGO (not this small at least).

Update:
I have just finished completely rebuilding the tail and rotors of the copter, they look way better now. I will post pictures soon.
I also have an idea to make the ADF Pod and Guns fully retract, I will make a prototype of this in the week or so and if it works add it to Airwolf. Here is a pic of the new upgrades taken at the monthly WAMALUG meeting I attend: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=4943186 I did not take it, I will try to take my own soon but I've been busy lately.
Updated Update:
OK I have taken some pics of the choper with modified tail and roters. I hope to find time to modify the weapons too.

It still looks just as epic now as it did before
/ / / /

Update, again:
I finally got around to replacing those blue windscreens with trans-black ones, but like I said I am not going to post new pics just for that. I probably won't modify the guns any time soon either, in order to do the idea I have I will have to spend probably a week taking the whole thing apart and I don't feel like doing that any time soon (plus I'm not %100 sure I can do the mod/get it back together again). I think I will add a new page when I do finally do all that instead of adding to the bottom of this one, I think that will work out better.
!!!Newer version!!! Airwolf V4

Very nice, the detail you have done with the availability of parts is fantastic. Bet you would like to create some of your own Lego parts that would make this look even better than it already is!
Maybe, I'd go for more of the parts they already make; I have so many but never enough of the right ones! Most of the time I just wish they made parts in colors like orange or chrome. Thanks for the comment, I hope to return the favor soon but I'm very backlogged on returning comments right now. |

I think definitely a new page! My builds evolve over time too - and when they have evolved enough, they become 're-makes' :-) This is a very accurate and well detailed scale model of an iconic helicopter. The window placement is great, a very original idea. The overall shape and look is great and a lot of work has been put into all the fine details. Brilliant!
I hope to get it done over the summer. I recently took apart the sides to see how I could change the guns, my idea should work, but I need to order more small plates in black and white (for this build anyway, I'm out of 1x3 plates in every color!) I still don't know about the ADF pod (I have an really cool idea, but haven't taken the bottom apart to look at yet). I really wish I could round out the corners on the front of the roof too, but not sure how to do that yet. This is one of my hardest MOCs, tied with my P-38 for time consumed, though still 2 years behind my train and that still needs work! Thanks for the lengthy comment, I love those! |

I like the KA-60 because it was in Metal Gear Solid 2 when the russian terrorists took control over the tanker.
Still have yet to play any of the Metal Gear games, but I have heard they are really good so I will probaly buy one of them sometime. |

theres nothing to improve scott. You could almost make a KA-60 helicopter out of this.
More likely a Bell 222, that's what Airwolf really is, they modified a Bell 222 to look like an attack helicopter for the show. The reason Airwolf's guns retract is so that it just looks like a civilian helicopter for undercover missions. It does look sort of like a KA-60 too. |

The windshield is really cool on this, the angled pieces look really good. Helicopters aren't exactly "easy" to make, and this build captures the look very well. My only complaint is that the colors aren't balanced. You have a lot of white in the back and in the main rotor, but there's none in front. Try to get more white towards the front of the chopper, it will look a lot better in so far as color balance. Otherwise, great work.
Thanks for your comment, I know the colors are not perfectly balanced, it is from a TV show, I probably could improve on it but I wanted to replicate it exactly. |

Excellent work, great detail, love Airwolf! The one thing i would consructively criticise is the blue windscreen, really dislike that colour, but that takes nothing away from how cool this MOC is! You should be proud!
Ha! Hadn't even noticed they were blue, just saw they were the same color and through them on. I think I have some trans-black or trans-brown ones, I will swap them for those. When ever I get around to midifying the guns I will add new pics. No scince adding new pics just for new color windsheald. |

hey there,
i love the show and I think this is a perfect representation on the actual chopper. just ine Question, Can you possibly tell me how to build it or can u email me the instructions (if u have them)
thanks
Sorry, but I do not have instructions for it, I built it out of my mind. As for how to build it you can try to copy the design from the pics I have up. I have the chopper from a lot of different angles so you could probably do it, but if you need pics of a certain part of it and I do not have them up, just ask, and I will see if I can take them. Also it would take forever to explain how to build the whole thing, but if you can be more spacific on what parts you need help with I could explain those. |
