Deep Armageddon colossal fireball impact from outer space!!
The observatory of Doctor Tremelo S. Hopper, Calamitown, June 1977.

*Knock-knock* Oh Doctor, are you there?

Ah, it’s the lovely Cherry Splendour, my favourite student! How are you my dear? What brings you to my lab tonight?
Why I’m fine Dr.Hopper. I was hoping you could give me some advice though on something uncomfortable that had me a bit concerned?

Well I’ll try my dear but you realise I’m not that kind of Doctor? I told you before about going to all those parties and…
Doctor! I didn’t mean like that! I was doing my astronomy homework and I noticed something strange in the sky – I was hoping you could take a look.
Of course my dear, we’ll get the telescope fired up! Where are my lab assistants? Caesar! Paisley!

Yo Cherry, what’s happening sweet thing?
Never mind that Caesar, where have you two hippies been? What’s that burning smell? Get the telescope working. Paisley, Cherry has some coordinates for you to compute.
Sorry Doctor, we’ve been, er…. playing Frisbee!

Wow Paisley, is that like, a new computer? That’s super funky!
I know. Doctor Hopper got us one that actually fits inside the room!

So my dear, what am I looking for?
Well Doctor, I was looking up from my loft at home and I could swear I saw something moving in the sky.
I’ll take a look dear, I’m sure it’s nothing….

By William Herschel’s harpsichord! It’s some kind of gigantic flaming heavenly body hurtling through space!

But Doctor what could it be?
I don’t know. An asteroid or meteoroid burning up as it comes into contact with our atmosphere? I’ve never seen anything like it, but I know one thing…

…It’s heading right for us!

My lord, it looks enormous and devastating.

Quickly, we’ve no time to lose. Paisley, call Mayor Shyster, he needs to evacuate Calamitown right now. Caesar, get my bag. Cherry, we need your boyfriend – Burt Squarejaw!

Did somebody call?
Squarejaw! Glad you’re here, that’s an extraordinary coincidence that’s saved a lot of time and exposition. You need to get us to the Air force base at Camp Upcreek. They may just have the firepower, a fast plane and a reckless yet heroic pilot to intercept that thing before it smashes into Calamitown. I just don’t understand why nobody had noticed it before now and raised the alarm. Still, to the car. The streets could be thronged with panicking people and we need to act fast!

Paisley, did you get through to the Mayor? I hope this isn’t like that time I warned him of the inferior flammable materials in the construction of the new prison and he still insisted on holding his opening night barbeque and bonfire! We’re still looking for some of those escapees now…..
No need sir, the Mayor’s here!

Surprise! Happy Birthday Doctor Hopper!
What? Do you mean there’s no giant flaming meteoroid hurtling through the atmosphere to destroy us all?
No! It was all a ruse to get you out of your lab for beer and pizza! The only thing flaming is the tennis ball that Caesar and Paisley soaked in gasoline and set alight for me to dangle here.

Oh that’s what the burning smell was! I thought you two hippies were smoking pot. You nearly gave me a heart attack. Alright, you got me. Somebody pass me a beer and a slice.
You can relax and enjoy your birthday Doc. We knew we’d never get you out of your lab without a good disaster. But you can take one night off from preventing the destruction of Calamitown can’t you?
Yeah Doc, like what’s the worst that could happen?
Eight hours later…..

Durrrrr, *Cough*

What’s that noise?
While in Calamitown…..

Aaaaah! Why couldn’t Dr. Hopper stop Mount Krakanut from erupting and the lava flowing under Calamitown?

And where is the Mayor in this time of emergency?
Oh my legs…..

4th Wall/ notes
This had to be set in the seventies, the glorious age of disaster movies and excuse to use my afro hairpieces.
I had a couple of false starts this round. I tried unsuccessfully to make a tornado that I was never happy with (shape good = flimsy, sturdy = looked rubbish, etc.), briefly considered a volcano, then thought of an asteroid collision and stuck with it. Then Heath told me he was doing asteroids too (actually, he said “I’m doing asteroids too ya *&!?%$bag!” What a charmer, eh?), so I had to put a twist on things.
Speaking of Heath, he’s been telling me he’s been playing a lot of Fallout and other stuff rather than building this week – I suspect he’s playing possum, but regardless I know i’m in talented company in this final four. Good luck to Heath, Gio, Dave and of course me!
Thanks for looking.

Brilliant work here Stuart, and a funny story to boot. The meteor and the old-school tape-drive computer were highlights. Rock on Stuart! |

A total win ! It's on the level of the best storywriter/builder like Chris,Hans, the Emperor... Very funny jokes and the narration flows very well. The jokes are understandable even to a french like me lol
And the choice of the year 1977 is a good point (I was born that year - which was a kind of disaster for the earth xD)

Quoting Awesome Builder
AWESOME COMET! can u pleez send me instructions at john.w.hastings@gmail.com
Sorry, I don't do instructions per se. Generally, the comet is a bram sphere (google it - there are lots of guides and instructions out there)which I faded from yellow, through orange to red. Then I built the tail shape up as a tall irregular pyramid in red. Finally, I added orange studs and flame pieces to break up the tail shape. A word of warning - it weighed a ton and I hadn't considered how to suspend it in front of my background. I had to do a quick re-build of one side to attach it to the backdrop. Good luck!

Excellent job my friend. I had hoped to face Batman in the final round, but a bout of procrastination helped to secure my end. I don't blame my illness fully, as if I weren't playing Fallout I would have had the set pieces built up as I envisioned long before Saturday's "Heath Flor's takedown". Last year I was knocked out in the first round.....this year I made it to the final four. No shame in that at all. Hope to see you win fine sir, as I will be cheering you on from the side! You MUST take down BATMAN!!! No pressure. |

Too late here for my vote to count, but you've got it nonetheless. Great story telling, and even better MOCs and presentation. Heath did VERY well on his, too, so it was another close one in my book, but apparently the others agreed. Congrats on the win, and now...buckle your seatbelt, Dorothy! |

I love how you built that computer! And my favorite minifig is the mime skeleton. There's just something about mimes that make you want to choke them out! LMAO. I was wondering how you were going to pull off a twist, but as usual the master story teller shows us how it's done. Good luck with the judges buddy....though I'm sure you won't need it! |

'My lord, it looks enormous and devastating'; if I had a nickle for every time I've heard THAT...LMAO I know, I know, I'd have a pocket full of lint=P Yeah, I was wondering about ol' Squarejaw's knickers in that shot; the combo of lighting and the yellow building DO make him appear to be nekkid. Loving the asteroid, lava scene, and well posed party 'aftermath'. Good luck, guvnuh, and congrats on a great build.~H |

Too much man. ;^} Love the lab equipment. Sure the telescope, but especially the mainframe. Nice appearance of your opponent in statue form at the end. I'm also wondering what brought to mind some of your references. Were you: listening to one of the symphonies, just thinking about Caroline in a free moment, or wiping Uranus after a good dump? |
