Krym Swarm Viper
This Vic-- I mean, Krym Swarm Viper is an agile but lightly armed air-to-air, air-to-ground and ground-to-ground unit.
About this creation
swarm [swawrm]–verb (used with object)
to swarm about, over, or in; throng; overrun.

The Krym are often called a cowardly race, as they prey on those with less technological might. However their tactics are difficult to repel even for the most advanced cultures. They tend to infiltrate only a few units at first, just to test the environment or get a feel for how alert their target is. Once the decision is made through, they pour every available unit onto their prey with the intent to break them completely. The Swarm Viper is the main offensive unit during these operations, and they move like a plague; cascading into enemy territory and invading everywhere they can fit, eliminating ruthlessly. (As always, click on a picture to see a bigger version.)

This color scheme has become well-known to victims, and many militaries even program their sensors to look for it. Why the Krym use such a bold red is unknown, it can only be guessed that its meant to instill fear or respect. Some humans even say it's meant to be blood, staining the metal itself.

Its not a particularly fast unit, but they are incredibly agile and flexible in dog fights, making them deadly to unaware pilots. Their exact method of propulsion is unknown, and best described as " a hum that cracks your teeth."

The initial configuration of the Swarm Viper is familiar enough. A cockpit, two wings, a tailfin, and forward mounted weapons. The wings carry one missile pod each, with 11 seeking missiles per pod. The original inspiration for this is from something I made years ago but never finalized. As I was remaking it, I realized its flight mode would strongly resemble a Vic Viper, so I made sure to add a tail-fin, and thus the Swarm Viper was born. Its shape is deceptive though...

...Within seconds, any Swarm Viper can switch to an active-ground mode, allowing it to mop up ground forces or enter structures.

I think it looks like a mix of a bulldog and a poodle, the front arms those of a brawler and the wings/legs making it look like it would bound across the ground with ease.

The head is decidedly alien though. I took inspiration from the Combine Gunship in Half-Life 2; its a mixture of machine and crustacean as far as I can tell. The mandibles would be pretty useless but I figure they help with the scare factor. I kinda wish I could have hid the ball-joints better.

The 'hoofs' can rotate to form claws, and at any time the arm can be brought up to wield rapid-fire plasma cannons. To deal with size constraints, their output is considerably less than in other units like a RED-SHIRT, but they still match the output of most flyer units.

I imagine it kind of bounding and hopping around. It would look awkward, but that instability belies it's ability to turn on a dime and attack hidden targets. It's flight systems are always active as well, providing instant lift-off on demand.

The cockpit was the biggest pain. I was determined to use one of those bubbles as the canopy, but mounting it so that a minifig would actually be inside it was tough. I finally settled on this clip arms & classic bar plates setup, and it holds the dome quite well. It doesn't seal perfectly, but otherwise I'm pretty happy with it. I imagine I'll use this technique later on.

Now you might be wondering how such a cute little space fighter/mech might face off against a dedicated mech platform. Well, a group of them (as they often travel in) would have little trouble with a lone mech. But on it's own, a Swarm Viper would need one good opening to get the advantage.

Ah, here we go. A Titan 4-eyes has been caught unaware on patrol, and this SV has taken its chance. A veteran pilot might be able to break free in time--

But this one isn't so lucky, so the T4 switches immediately to it's chest optics in hopes of getting a bead on the enemy. This pilot has forgotten an important rule of mech combat though: the entire vehicle is a weapon.

This move often catches pilots by surprise and increases the SV's attack range considerably. This was really tricky to do! Yes, the SV is doing a handstand without any support, but whenever I moved it for the second shot, I'd have to spend awhile rebalancing it. So while it's possible its far from easy. The result is devastating though:

With this one move the SV gets inside the enemies defenses, and can either stun or cripple it. In this case, the T4's cockpit has been crushed, leaving the pilot either dead, or unable to operate the controls.

A quick inspection confirms the Krym as the victor, but there is one final insult for the conquered:

Thanks for checking out the Krym Swarm Viper, and I hope you liked all my babbling too. Please check out my other MOCs if you want to see more, and you can view the brickshelf gallery here.

Really solid design. I really like the whole transfermation from a ship to a ground fighter excellent build.

Again, thanks for the compliments guys! It has been awhile since I finished anything, mostly because of moving and not having a good place to do the photos. But trust me, I've got plenty of ideas and hope to be accomplishing a bit more now.

It's been too long since (a) I was last on here and (b) I commented on any of your stuff, so this was really a treat. I love the form in either mode (especially the slight upward angle on the rear section of the Viper sells it for me, I don't know why), but that it can transform so solidly is pretty epic in something that size. The cockpit idea is excellent too, and though I've wondered about that part myself it never would've occurred to me to bracket it in like that. There's probably more I want to say, but at the moment I'm a little crunched for time. Awesome build, and very intriguing theme you've established here.

good to see you back and bricking! thanks for all the E-mail tips, the mech is coming great, and this one certainly looks like a good fighter, kinda reminds me of those Gekkos from MGS 4: Guns of The Patriots, looking forward for more, ~ Sidewinder.

Thats an awesome build man, loving the transformation action you got going on there. Also nice technique to cup the dome in for a functional cockpit.

I thought you'd built a very nice viper and then, unexpectedly, it transformed into ground mode and I was blown away! Very, very cool build.

From the main picture I thought it was a spaceship. But when I opened the page, it turned out to be a 'robot in disguise' :D A very awesome construction!

Man, there is a just a slew of great creations floating around the 'pages today. This one is superb. The MOC itself excels in form and color scheme wonderfully. The presentation including the transformation is top notch.

The ship rocks! But man I wish I knew how to do that transforming gif thing! Not that you'd get that epic effect you do with this ship, mine hardly move, much less transform.
