About this creation

First in a series that studies abandoned homes. This piece is 2.5' square by 1' deep.

I am selling Limited Edition Prints of this which includes actual sections and documentation. You can see more information at http://bumbleandbramble.blogspot.com/

This is my first moc since coming out of dark ages a few months back. I chose to work in B&W to reduce the image to more of a textural study. As this was my first lego experience (since a kid) I had no bricks to start with, so buying all black and white was easiest as well.

You can see more about this and some photos of it in my study on http://mikedoylesnap.blogspot.com/

Edit:
Wow! Thanks so much for all the kind comments!! It has given me a lot of enthusiasm! In terms of being my first moc, I have to say, that this sort of thing would not be possible on my own. Flicker, MOCpages and blogs have been critical in examining all the incredible work you all do and learning from the techniques. All I can say is I am amazed every day at the work I see - astonished really. The cleverness and ease at which many build is humbling but is fantastic to learn from.

Some photo retouching has been done here to adjust for contrast, bring out detail and add background. I had a very hard time shooting this as it is high contrast: black/white and hard to hold details. Also a very old camera with low pixel and I had to get back quite a ways to shoot. :P You can see my blog above though to validate it's all real though. I'll be providing close ups soon. Unfortunately, I don't think there's much new here in terms of technique though.

Wow that's really impressive. Very realistic. Being from the Detroit area I like to think I have special perspective on the run down, abandoned, slow death of what was once a thriving vibrant family home. Not sure if you've visited Detroit, but if your doing a study, this is certainly the place. If you survive the research that is.

These projects show a level of skill, discipline, and artistic talent that inspire and humble at the same time. Your houses illustrate Lego possibilities that I would never have imagined been able to imagine previously. I don’t even think about Lego when I look at them. I think about old houses (and what they must have looked like new). Really great work! Attack!

Quoting Rocky Angelini Hey Mike did you paint any of the bricks? In some of the pics (like the door) they look like they are, but I can't tell if that's just lighting or if the bricks are painted. Just curious. Hey the Victorian looks awesome! Can't wait to see that one all completed. Cheers!
Thanks Rocky! No paint, I think just reflections you are seeing. When building I don't use any foreign materials. As for Victorian, I just finished it a few days agp and am working with the photo now. Should have that up in a day or two. Thanks for the interest! mike

Well you mentioned that there is not much new with regard to technique in this but boy what a way to combine the mundane into a fantastic creation. At first glance of the thumbnail I wasn't going to explore a black house regardless of the style but the snow intrigued me so I leapt on ....WOW a burnt out building was not what I expected and certainly not one of such accurate detail. You must have some painful photo references if you lived there at some stage but have turned a tragedy into something we have all enjoyed.

Logged into my dusty MOCpages account just to comment. This is absolutely phenomenal! The textures, colours (overal lack thereof) and emotion are brilliant. Oddly enough something that really stands out to me is the 1x2 brick-stacked... bricks around the upper right window. The use of what appears to be differently weathered bricks as well as not seeming to be quite pushed together really click (pardon the pun). Really looking forward to future entries in this series.

Perfectly captures the look of a burned out house covered in snow. Great detail and texures, the two-tone color works very well on this moc. Since someone said Poe, I'll say "Fall of the House of Usher".

I gotta admit, when I saw this I had two thoughts enter my mind. The first was "small scale with white powder used to created snow effect" and "too good for a first-timer, must be stolen". But after looking closely at the (sadly, only one) picture, I can see that it is indeed done entirely with bricks and plates, and does not use any non-LEGO elements (that I can see). I also see that your blog has a WIP photo, and that it is actually yours. So, thank you for dispelling two erroneous snap judgements.

Could you do me two tremendous favors? First, more pictures so I can absorb all the fantastic amazingness of this build. Second, more creations, so I can gape at your beautiful building skills. Third,...wait, I only asked for two... In all seriousness! What a great early build! I'm so glad to see you on Mocpages, and greatly look forward to more of your creations in the future. In summary, when I first saw the picture, I was confident it was real and not made from Lego. You are amazing!
