Hadron Industries Mk-IX Riot Control Unit
A crowd-dispersal mecha designed by Hadron Industries. Built for the MO 'Beat the Judges' side game.
About this creation
With the realization that hitting people on the head repeatedly with a wooden baton doesn't work all the time finally struck, the police forces of the world realized something had to be done about rioters. It was generally decided that most civilians had lost a total fear of regular officers, so they decided to build something they would be afraid of...

Weighing in at approximately at approximately 15 tons, this massively-mini mecha is no lightweight. It can reach speeds of thirty mph on open terrain, and can swat aside barricades with its massive forearms. It boasts two manipulator claws for capture of a riot's leaders and six gas canisters for mob dispersal. Truly, this crowd-control mech is a force to be reckoned with.

The mech has a rather solid and sturdy frame to protect its pilot should it be knocked down or encounter a rogue mecha of any form. However, this unit was not built to handle other mecha, and should not be used for such purposes.

The rear of the machine is relatively unarmored, but is still protected from thrown projectiles and most forms of shrapnel.

While the left shoulder is bare, the right shoulder has been fitted with a spotlight. This is not standard issue, but helps to demonstrate some of the mechas modular nature.

The Mk-IX is mostly humanoid in nature.

The large bubbled canopy provides the pilot with a panoramic view of his surroundings, and shows the rioters there is a human being inside. While this may seem trivial, it prevents the mecha from being portrayed as a faceless entity of evil and helps keep it from becoming a symbol of oppression. Note: If it becomes a symbol of oppression, you should probably look back at what you've been doing with it. That kind of thing is generally important.

A pair of headlights are mounted just below the cockpit to illuminate the pilot's field of vision.

While relatively small, the mecha's legs are armored to protect them from rioters.

However, there are still hydraulics exposed to the elements. For this reason, we advise against taking the Mk-IX into a hostile crowd, as a collapse could result in massive collateral damage.

It should be noted that they thigh portion is relatively unarmored. Again, keep the mecha out of hostile crowds unless it is absolutely necessary.

In order to aid the apprehension of suspects, the Mk-IX has long arms that end in hands capable of lifting a human being off the ground. This makes them ideal for following the shield line and lifting marked suspects out of the crowd.

The Mk-IX's forearms are heavily armored so that they may be used for clearing barricades or reaching into a hostile crowd to capture a suspect.

Because they are not expected to be in danger, the upper arms are relatively unarmored. They will stand up to all projectiles, shrapnel, and most forms of small arms fire.

As said before, the rear of the machine has lower armor, and should never be presented to the crowd unless it is absolutely necessary.

Armor plate on the back of the hips.

The pilot sits in the units torso, behind the bubbled canopy. The interior is sealed against gas attacks, so it can move through areas that have recently been hit with tear gas or pepper spray.

Speaking of gas attacks, the Mk-IX mounts six gas canisters capable of holding any type of standard gas round. These are mounted just alongside the cockpit to allow for easy aiming. Note: Never fire gas rounds directly into a crowd, as this will most likely cause a panic. Instead, use them to form barricades and to keep a crowd from entering certain areas.

You Have the Right To Remain Airborne: We Have the Right to Reintroduce You To Gravity.

Fourth Wall:
I have to say I'm extremely proud of this. Maybe not some areas, but I really like the overall design. I'd also like to say that I did some research into police riot-control tactics. Seeing as the goal is to disperse the crowd as peacefully as possible, I decided to build a mech that actually fit in. One of the most important things for crowd dispersal is intimidation, and I don't think many things are scarier than officers in full riot gear backed by a mech.

And thanks for looking everyone! Drop me a comment if you have the time.

I see a lot of mechs but this one sticks out. It's very clean and compact. I like the feet - very creative! For some reason I like the cabin even though it's nothing fancy. Great job overall!

Greebly wonderfulness in a wrong-doer intimidating form! I really love the way you've thought about how the function should influence the design, and all the detail you put in. Too bad you can't enter it in the Survival Contest as well, I'd have scored it very highly :-)

Now THIS has stompability up the wazoo... The joints are really good, as with a lot of other mechs of yours I have seen. The joints on this are a source I drew inspiration from on my 'Beat the Judges' entry.

This, sir, is a win. I wish my country's police had some of these. That way they'll be feared and respect by criminals.

Thanks! I'm still pretty surprised I managed to beat Yuri.
Quoting Master Shifu Leo J Very nice! Diggin' the gas canisters. It gives the front part an 'aggressive' look.
Thank you! Intimidation factor is pretty important to the design.

Quoting Alex Fojtik Definitely one of your best! The mech itself is well formed; I like the slightly angled torso cannons the best. Also the futuristic police uniforms are very well thought out. Good luck!
Thanks man! I'm quite happy with the overall shaping myself.
Quoting Minifig Maniac Gah! This is awesome! Roger Brickjet is right though, This WOULD get crushed.
And look bloody stylish while doing so.
Quoting Hans DendauwNPD You have a great knack for greebly mechatry. The feet are great, but those legs look a little too weak in knees:p I would definitely avoid large riots~H
I find your choice of words amusing. However it depends on what you're referring to as the knee. Some bits of the leg are quite sturdy, others not so much...

Quoting Ben The Lego Builder Wow! This is really nicely detailed, I like the addition of the shield pieces.
Thanks! Where would the riot police be without shields, right?
Quoting Scott Aldridge Awesome mech, I like the hands and some of the nifty details, such as the six gas canisters. :)
Thank you, I really like those hand designs myself.
Quoting Waffles . Yay, gas spreading mecha! I wan't to remain airborne without being introduced to gravity. Let's just say we've had a "falling out." =) ~Waff

Quoting Giovanni Seynhaeve This is a building style that is completely out of my field. I really should look into this in time, cause it simply is amazing! Thanks for the good pics, they really show how it's done.
Thanks! If you need any breakdown pics or things like that I'd be happy to help.
Quoting A minute ago in the store across the road Great mech, the police force would be much stronger with that at their sides! Cool design too.
I know I'd sign up to be an officer if they did.
Quoting haran banjo COOL!!!!

Quoting Roger Brickjet **** this is hard! I honestly don't know how to make this a fair judging, I'm torn between favouring a non-bionicle or massive features, both great builds... Ok, I took a few minutes to look them over again and...no, wait...no, this goes right into my heart in a childish way, I can't help it. I think it's the pose in the main pic, but also concept and story...sorry Yuri but my vote has to go to Ribbits. Of course where both mechs to battle it out - this would get mashed :)
Thanks for your vote! I really appreciate it! And I totally agree, it would be an epic curbstomp should mine face his in single combat.

Thanks for the support! What I think pushed Stuart's build ahead of mine was his atmosphere. He managed to set his up masterfully.
Quoting Perry McShane well done, some of the joints look a bit weak though, maybe beef them up?
I considered adding some kick-arse shoulder pads and things like that, but I really liked the way it looked with the clips. Plus those clips are actually alot stronger than they look.

Thanks! I love those troopers too. I just wish I had the money to build more...
Quoting Yuri Fassio Wonderful mech! Good luck!
Thanks Yuri! Your mech is gonna be tough to beat. Good luck to you too!
Quoting Eric Mickle This is a briliantly designed exo-suit. But I must warn you some things look too fragle to survive a fight. You may respond to that by saying, its Lego foo! Plastic dont fight, I would agree with that statement though. >Eric
Actually, I already explained why. I stated pretty early on this mech exists solely to disperse crowds, not fight other mechs. It isn't built for a stand up fight, it's built to scare civilians away and support the officers on the ground.
Quoting Mudskipper 4 *whistle* "Don't worry, I have no plans of starting any riots." Yes, exceptional build, great presentation, and good extras. This is a great mech!
Many thanks citizen! We're glad you approve.
