Appa
Appa is Aang’s skybison from Avatar, the Last Airbender Cartoon series.
About this creation
Long ago, the four nations lived in harmony. Then, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked! Only the Avatar; master of all four elements could stop them. But when the world needed him most, he vanished… A hundred years passed, and my brother and I discovered the new Avatar: an airbender named Aang. And although his airbending skills were great, he has a lot to learn before he is ready to save anyone! But I believe Aang can save the world!!!

I only recently discovered this cartoon series and have devoured the episodes! When the news hit me that it was to be turned into a movie, by none other than Muh Night Shyamalan, I was overjoyed. However, seeing the movie quickly cured me of that blissful feeling… The movie is pretty damn sucky! So be warned about the movie, but do go and see the cartoon peeps!

By becoming a fan of the series so late, I missed LEGO’s official releases and improvised the characters… The stubby figure up front is Aang, the Avatar.

In the saddle is Katara bending the water from her hip flask into a water axe, and Sokka is ready to hurl his boomerang!

I started building Appa with its nose: I have precious few bricks in this grey-blue shade, but they are the perfect colour… Then I remembered the Sarlacc from Jabba’s sailbarge (#6210); I could use those bricks for Appa’s cheeks! That pretty much defined the scale Appa would become! A little bulkier than other Appas here on MOCpages, which are aptly minifig scaled (the way a car holds one minifig), but an insider may know that Appa can easily fit Sokka in its mouth!

Building the head was a real pain; too many stud-inversions, tricky angles and too many features to have to incorporate! After that the body was a piece of cake to put together: one hump, two stripes and six legs, ha!
Photobucket

Under the tail is the biggest asshole ever! I´ll spare you the close ups… The thing is, once I set my mind on building the tail on this big ´wheeled´ hinge, it had to remain that; a hinge. And when the tail is down, it nests partly in this recess

The last challenge was building the saddle. As you may have noticed, the saddle is a loose structure resting against Appa´s hump, making it fragile and hard to create the desired angles and retaining a slender look. First choice was to make it in dark brown, but after a frustrating hour or so I discarded the idea and went for dark bley instead; it was tricky enough without confining the available bricks to just a handful…

You may be seeing this MOC again as I am toying with the idea to build an Air temple next. Or maybe the walls of Ba Sing Se… I am not sure yet, little help please?

Have fun!!!

I really dig your take on the Sky-Bison, it is instantly recognizable. You should try another Avatar model, maybe a diorama to give Appa somewhere to roam...or just as likely sleep.

I was a huge fan of Avatar, with good reason of course, and this is quite wonderful! Loads of character in this build, you really have captured him very nicely. That's Appa alright!

Quoting affliction . ... if you watch closely, Appa really changes scales drastically depending on which studio was animating the episode...
Haha, that's rich!
Quoting affliction . ...the eyes are a little big and (I'm nitpicking) he should have 5 stripes, the tip of his tail should be brown...
All stripes are accounted for, including the fifth on the tip of the tail... (Only in-frame on the second to last photo..) You're right about the eyes though! Once I set my mind on using the arches I have absolutely failed to notice it... Thx for the add!

Awesome Appa. Nice to see one big enough to swallow Sokka, makes me wish I'd done mine larger. Although, if you watch closely, Appa really changes scales drastically depending on which studio was animating the episode. I like that you included the angled parts of the saddle, but the eyes are a little big and (I'm nitpicking) he should have 5 stripes, the tip of his tail should be brown :P. You should post this on the avatarspirit.net forums, they'd eat it up!
