LDD model of the famous building in Gran Vía street, in Madrid.

About this creation

I built this model in LDD because I don't have enough pieces, and it is shorter in lenght than the real building.

Here you have a little of its history:

The "Edificio Metrópolis" (translated "Metropolis Building"), is a famous building, French-inspired, and is located on the corner between Alcalá street and Gran Vía street. It was inaugurated in 1911 and was designed by Jules and Raymond Février for the insurance company "Unión y Fénix".
It was built on the free terrain in the construction of Gran Vía street, when the "Casa del Ataúd" ("Coffin House") -named that way because of its narrowness-. Over the ground floor, the upper floors are decorated with columns that serve as a pedestal for allegorical statues of Trade, Agriculture, Industry and Mining.
The circular tower is topped with a slate dome with golden scale. Originally it stood the symbol of the company (A bronze statue of the phoenix on which was a human figure with a raised arm, representing Ganymede).
In the early 70's, the company sold the building to its present owners, the insurer "Metrópolis". The new owners decided to take the statue to their building in Paseo de la Castellana street. Finally, the statue was replaced by another one which represents the Winged Victory; the original phoenix is located now in the modern garden "Edificio La Unión y el Fénix Español".

WOW! That is a real difficult building to build in ldd with a lot of ornaments. I think it looks great.

Quoting affliction . This is gorgeous. I'm so glad you decided to post the LDD file so I could look closely at the details. I love how you did the windows. The internal structure of the dome is giving me a headache, though :P. I'm a little surprised LDD was cooperative enough with all those angles for you to actually finish it.

Thank you a lot!! The dome is built as a penthagon, and I made its curvature with headlight bricks attached to the curved slopes. :)
