A day on the Demeter
This is the kind of ship I always wanted to build when I was but a wee lad: lots of minifigs and lots of cool features and playability. So here it is, in a short story format...
About this creation
Remember that last image here? After some months of gathering dust, I finally got around to making something with that box of assorted white and blue pieces. I built this all in one day. A particularly rainy day.

Down on the barren surface of Yotytiis II, a reconnaissance vehicle makes its way...

"Demeter, Ground One here. Scanner's picking up a signal. Looks like a very rich seam of some unknown material. That stuff is dense!"

"Transmitting the data to your ship now for analysis."

Somewhere in orbit around Yotytiis II...

"Analyzing data. Wow, this is some interesting stuff! Could be cummingtonite, or possibly bastardane. Or even some compound we haven't seen before."

"Ground One, this is Demeter. Data is scanned and high density is confirmed. Could be interesting. We're setting a course for your location now."

"Search light on. Landing boosters on!"

"Extend landing feet. Landing in 4, 3, 2..."

"...1! We have touchdown."

"Ladies and gentlefolks, another happy landing for the Demeter."
"Shut it, Michaels. Becks, give me a status report!"
"All systems nominal, sir."

"Okay people, let's get cracking! I want a full exploration team on the surface in ten. And someone wake up our little princesses...and that one other dude. On the double!"

"Tyler, you man the scooter. And keep your eyes open!"

BUUUZZZZZ!
"Oh, hell. What now?"

Eight minutes later...

"Come on, people. Assemble below the hatch. But don't stand in the way. And stop fidgeting with your instruments, Reed... I saw that, Reed!"

At the same time, on the other side of the Demeter...

"Scooter's good to go, sir!"

"Alright, go check out the location."

"Hey Ground One, could you point us to the spot?"
"Sure thing."

"Ooh, this looks interesting indeed! I'm taking a sample to take with us."

"Report in. What does it look like, Michaels? Are we happy?"

"Very happy, sir. Looks like a big chunk of arsole crystals."
"Good. If that's true, we will contact headquarters and a mining division will come here. Mark the spot."

"And bring me a piece of that stuff!"

"Okay, return back to the ship. Our work here is done. Great work all around, people!"

"Transmit data to headquarters"

"Okay, that was a job well done, people. We've earned our existence once again!"

"Someone clean up that mess in the hallway!"

Well there you have it. As I said above, this is just the sort of thing I wanted to build when I was younger, only to be stopped short by a tremendous shortage of parts ;). This is also why I wanted to keep that classic space feel, without limiting myself too much to the classic colour scheme.
I particularly like the interior, with all the computers and the working hatches and scientific area and sleeping quarters. And I'm also rather proud of those landing feet, although they may not look like much. They fold inside the ship almost completely, and when they're folded out, the ship stands very sturdy. I could even build the ship while it was on its feet, with no extra support.

Oh, and one more thing. The silly names for the chemicals actually all do exist. Just don't comment solely about the chemicals. I no, rite.

++++BONUS IMAGES++++

Hephaestus. A pink ship!

I don't know what happened to it either. But this is about as far as my pink/purple collection reaches.

And to quote Monkey Island: "But it's....pink"

Very Cool! I know what you mean about playability. What good is making something if it falls apart when you touch it? I really love all the little details that make it really come together. Like the folding landing gears, fold at hatch door, and all the interior stuff. Just Brillant!

I really have to get better at checking the pages more often cause I miss great stuff like this all the time. Great ship and the story was an awesome bonus! Nice interior as well, it's a real challenge building both the ins and outs of a ship. (BTW pink ship FTW!)

It's nice to finally be able to build what you always dreamed of when you were a kid, isn't it! The exterior of the ship is a little bulky IMHO, but you have to love that detailed interior. And like others, my favorite is that Recon vehicle. It's just beutiful! Well done!

Quoting Dan Church Great build! I love how the style has a mixture of old and new parts. I also noticed the yellowing of some of the moon plates, and I just happened across a blog post at the Brothers Brick that show you a way to bring them back to the original grey. Here's the link if you're interested. http://www.brothers-brick.com/2009/08/30/how-to-clean-yellowed-lego-bricks-to-make-classic-space-sets-look-new-news/
Thank you! I saw that post, then forgot all about it ;) About the old and new parts: this MOC all started out with the big cockpit panels. They were a side order by some bricklink order (you can imagine how that works), but I never got around to using them. This is actually the very first time I've used those parts.
