1/12 1997 Bentley Turbo R
1/12 Bentley Turbo R
About this creation
Hi,

At last, another car !
And no, it's not the TVR or Bugatti (aaaawww!!! ... don't worry, one's done and the other's not far off now!)

A 1/12 scale this time - same size as the TVR and Bugatti, but different scale as it's a much bigger car... the Bentley Turbo R.

Sure, not the newest Bentley - most kids are probably always into the newest they make all the time... ha ! Continental ? New Mulsanne ? Just flashy Volkswagens... This one was british-built.

It might look a bit like an expensive Mercedes w124, but this car packs much more punch with its powerful motor, and is much nicer inside and out. Maybe not the newest, and to be honest not my favourite Bentley (dark green lego is expensive and not available in many parts to make the proper vintage ones) but still one of their cars I really love.

I really like the big, imposing headlamps; and when I'd figured out how to make them in lego, I decided to make the rest of the car to go with it.

Black outside with tan interior; interior in the boot, nice big engine, working steering and rear suspension, four opening doors and bonnet, and a flashy interior. Everything except the champagne :)

It looked great until the roof went on... I can't help thinking it looks a little too squarish, though when I look at photos of the real car I think all that went wrong is my door line is a little too high... somehow I don't think it looks 100% right, yet compared to photos of the original it's pretty damn near... hmm...

Let me know what you think, if you like it :)

After a year's wait, I've finally sorted out bricklink and gotten the parts for my Bugatti (much better than this car) - so will be posting that right after this one - check it out :)

- Dan

P.S. Thanks ever so much to Stacey, who owns the Bricklink store "about town, castle and train" for getting me the last few bits I needed to finish this - it means a lot to me :)

Thanks for replying, your comment is very helpful. I'll take a look around and see if we can build it. Chris McConn is my cousin and we were discussing our idea and both decided to comment at the same time.little bit crazy.

Quoting Chris McConn Could you put up instructions my cousin and I want to make Skulduggery Pleasant Lego?
Either this is the weirdest coincidence to ever happen to me or you and Katherine are cousins and have decided to both leave me the exact same comment within a minute of each other. See my reply to her comment for your answer.

Quoting Katherine O'Neill-Robinson Could you put up instructions my cousin and I want to make Skulduggery Pleasant Lego?
Not wanting to disappoint... but that would involve dismantling the whole thing, then slowly rebuilding it whilst somehow making instructions. This would probably take days to do... and not only is the car 1000 miles away from me right now; but it is somewhat different to the 1950s model driven by Skullduggery Pleasant :) If you want to have a go I would suggest looking up some good pictures, including front, back and side-on photos of the actual car (1954 Bentley R-type continental) and, if you're wanting to make it the same scale as mine in Lego, maybe just taking a good look at how I've built mine for inspiration, and try to figure it out like that - it would probably be much easier. You could then change the design as necessary to make it more like the correct car. My big cars are built in a similar way and the WIP page (there might be two actually) for my TVR shows some intermediate steps in building a large-scale car the way I do, starting with a flat base to which the wheels, steering and possible suspension mechanisms are attached, the the interior built inside it, and finally the body around it. - Dan

It's probably just me, but the wheel base could be a bit longer. Other than that it's perfect

Quoting Fred Ottens Not bad ;-) The shape is good, everything opens, everything works sooooo... If you don't like the roof why didn't you make a cabrio?
Well, I guess I wanted to stay true to the real car - they don't make cabrio versions of these. They do of the next model up (timewise), the Azure, which is very similar looking; but not the Turbo R. I wasn't happy with the doors as this is so far the model I've found hardest to keep to scale. Everything else is right, the roof *is* the right size, but since the doors are about a brick too high, it makes the roof higher and in consequence the car looks too short - though it is the right length. To be honest I just didn't feel like altering the whole sides and door interiors once I'd gotten that far...

Outstanding! It does look a little short, but it's true that the proportions of Lego pieces themselves contribute to this when you give it as much detail as this model has.

Lovely old-skool building. Studs have been under-rated a while! I think the rear door is a bit short, but still a 5 star car. Great job

Quoting Firas Abu-Jaber May be you're right about the roof; but it looks fantastic for me though! instantly recognizable and one of my favorite cars, my favorite part is the front end, the rear lights are amazing too. And, at least, I can't see your bed in the pictures ;p Well done mate.
Thanks ! Your white background photos look so good I thought I'd have a go myself... turned out not bad; or better than my bed anyway haha :) - Dan

Quoting T.K . very nice! Could be a tad longer though.
Yeah, I do think that's the problem... it looks short. It's actually the right length, keeping in scale - I think the way that the roof is too high (because the door is too high) it makes it look short... oh well :(
