8/20/10 – Welcome back my dedicated followers! The theme for this entry is “It’s About Friggin’ Time!” or maybe “What the Hell Was I thinking?”…you decide.

“About Friggin’ Time” would certainly apply, given that my last entry was April. Since then, work’s had me in a dozen different states, including Montana, Florida, Illinois, South Carolina, intoxication, confusion, and the great state of panic. And if work wasn’t enough to delay progress, I also had to go into the mid-section of the SHIP, tear it down, and then rebuild; adding an additional eight inches of hull length. I said something to Phipson about adding inches, and got the usual remarks.

Personally, I’m choosing to go with “What the #*&@! Was I Thinking” because at about a third of the way through this undertaking, I’ve already used more parts than the entire Invisible Hand project. I mean, how did that happen? I could’ve sworn, when starting, that the ships would be about the same size! Pssssshh!!! Now I certainly AM swearing, as the BL orders have been flowing like the Nile, and (to stick with the water analogy) my bank account is making that sucking noise you hear when the bathtub is finally drained of all its water!

But, anyway - enough of my whining. Let’s get to what you guys are here for…

Here’s a shot of me finishing up the aft section. With the additional hull length added, she’s now hitting right at the seven-foot mark. Okay stop looking my skinny, hairy arms. C’mon, look at the ship…foooooo-cus.

The Halo Encyclopedia came out just in the nick of time for me. While it still didn’t provide any rear shots (Shut it, Phipson!) there was at least this excellent side-view provided. It finally gave me a proportional guide, and I quickly realized that what I had for the SHIP’s length wasn’t going to cut it.

…I stomped around, cried a little, swore a lot, kicked things, blamed it all on Sean Kenney (it’s ALWAYS his fault!) and then after eating a gallon of Hagen Das to make myself feel better, I finally settled down to reconstruct a portion of the hull. The shot you see here is the added section. And despite my little temper tantrum, it actually turned out to be a great addition, with some of my favorite textural details on the angular walls, and a pretty sweet looking unit sitting atop the deck.

So here’s where we left off last journal entry, and the additions to the second level of the upper deck.

A little more G n' G (greebly goodness) for ya.

Full shot of the aft portion that I’ve just completed. I know I’ve spent too much time working on this when someone asks “how’s it hanging” and I think they’re asking about the ship. But to answer the question; short, shriveled, and to the left.

Oh wait, sorry...we were talking about the ship. Right, then. The unit under the arrow is hollow, and the rear wire is stored underneath within the hull. When it comes time to hang the ship (which is SOON!), the wire will extend through a small hole in the top of that unit and attach to an overhead support. Initially I was pretty confident about two wires being enough. After all, they worked well for the I.H., but the darn thing already weighs as much as the Hand did, and I’ve still got a long way to go. May have to invest in some more wire!

Now I’ll show a little mercy by playing the quiet game. Meanwhile, you can check out some additional views and details…

And because we AFOLs always like to throw it down on the table and measure it out for the sake of bragging rights, I leave you with an unabashed, obnoxious, Lego-maniacal pic of my latest pile of BL orders. This is in preparation for work on the ventral portion of the ship. But, the sad thing is; as much plastic as we’re looking at here, it won’t even come close to being enough, which brings us back to where we started… “What the Hell Was I Thinking!”

Until next time, my fellow, Legonians. Thanks for stopping by.

I am still in awe of this... Anyway, people seemed to want more greebles on the Halo Destroyer that I posted the other day. So I did the only sensible thing; destroyed the moc and started from scratch on another Halo build :-) I will post it tomorrow or the day after depending on when I get a break from work and can get some pictures taken. I am looking forward to being done with school so that I can start to work on some truly impressive builds. I don't think I will ever be able to create anything like this though.

Now, while you're still gnawing away the bones in your fingers, would a suggestion for a third uber SHIP be accepted? Tough, here it is; the USG Ishimura from Dead Space. If you've played that game (doubt it...too busy with the EoC here), then you should, like me, think that the Ishimura is quite, umm... inspirational. Just consider it, please!

No Problem! Wait, what? You think that's just wrong? Huh? Oh, you do, huh? Hmm.... well @##$%&%%$^@#*$#^&$@!!! Oh, sorry. I didn't really mean that... (Yeah, and we will never forgive you for working, and spending time with you family! Never. TRAITOR! Your family is your LEGO's, that SHIP!) *sigh* Anyway, seriously? This beast is AWESOME! I could NEVER hope to have even CLOSE to the amount you AFOL's have... Here I'm struggling to even build a tiny little AMP Suit! Anyway... great job, can't wait to see it finished!

Quoting Dominick Sinclair YAY!!!!! I can NOT wait to see this complete. Are you going to put it in a huge Halo battle with the Covenant? That would be pretty awesome! And also, is this minifig scale?
You and me BOTH! Still a LONG way to go, but at least I'm back to work on it now. Not planning a battle or anything at this point. And as for minifig scale...well, my ship is about 7 feet or so, and fig scale would be aproximately 188 feet (or a bit more than half a football field long), so I'm gonna say...um...no - looks like I'm juuuuust a skosh shy. ;-)

Oh, I'm sooooo sorry! What was I thinking, you know, working, and spending time with my family and all! Please forgive me, I'll get right on it! Sorry - couldn't resist. Okay, annoying sarcasm aside, Yes. Absolutely. Working on it right now, in fact. I've started the bottom portion, and just this week had to go back and re-work the aft portion of the top half. One more BL order to receive, and the top half will be hung to get it out of the way, and allow space for the bottom portion to really get rolling.

Quoting Matt Hanson Wow Jason D., no need to shoot Mark down now, the man is a veteran ship builder and I'm sure he's got the weight thing under control. Didn't you see the earlier journals? Do you know how much force it takes to snap a 2x4? Vision is important to an artist. Mark, I see this SHIP flying proudly one day, finished, in all it's grey glory.
Heh-heh. Thanks for the vote of confidence, Matt. Yeah, the weight isn't a huge concern with the kind of interior I've built. It's transporting the thing that scares me...that, and every overzealous 6 to 8 year old at Brick World! "HEY KID - NO TOUCHY!!!

When this is done i think we might end up seeing you next to a mountain of grey bricks crying, saying WHHHHHYYYYY! Wont it be too heavy to hang? I can picture it bending and breaking in two just from its weight. Nice detail, just dont want it to end up on the floor.

Hi Mark, your doing a great job, just noticed a tiny flaw, the side elevation from the Halo Encyclopaedia is missing roughly a centimetre because of the separation at the book spine, I dont know how closely u were following the image but its shorter than it should be, still useful for detail tho. Potentially cause problems further down road. Cant wait to see it finished, also these ships briefly appear in the Halo Legends anime shorts if your lookin for more pics, good luck :D

my guess at ;what was i thinking,#1 i ll build the biggest lego ships on the planet!spare no expenses.a la hamond from jurassic park!#2 with each ship i ll get better, and one day the phone will ring, and georges[lucas]will want to see me for a buisness proposition! #3disney will want to have it as a permanent show,in cooperation with lego! i could fill your page with ideas,so to all the people here who associate the dollar value of a massive visionary creation with a limit of creativity freedom,i ll say this, take $3000 buy yourself a nice used car,and never take a chance at anything, and stay unnoticed. or take the same money on a lego creation, put in a lot of work, and who knows,it s art at this level, now,do you guys get it? good show mark, and no regrets please! you re the captain of this ship! just lead it strait to succes, you know the way!

First of all, you're mad to have even started this, it's gorgeous. So, if I'm right, the "Eye" currently weighs almost the same as my 2 1/2 year old daughter (15 Kg). I think at least three wires are needed. When we put my girl up on display we actually use 4 wires, but we're like that :-D

It’s far enough along now that it’s really starting to transition from early WIP to huge impact MOC…and it’s only a third of the way there. Love the shapes on the reconstructed section…amazing work all around, Mark. Sooo…when’s it gonna be done? ;-)

Wow, this is looking fantastic so far! The greebly bits are looking good as is the shaping. Those bricklink orders rival some builders entire collections. Not...ahem...mine. Mine is plenty big. I'm not worried...

Mark, you are one of the first members of MOCpages that I discovered when I joined over a year ago. I didn't comment on anything until I started posting pictures of my work. You and some of the other masters here, Sean, Chris, Mark Stafford, Brian Kescenovitz, and Sir Nadroj to name a few (there are too many to list them all) are the ones who've influenced me the most. Your work on this S.H.I.P. is just amazing. Every surface just explodes with tons of detail. I can't wait until you publish photos of the final installment. Regards, Eric.

Unbelievable. You have captured the exact look of this ship. I have no idea how you have the patience to build that, I would have gone insane….er, trying something on that scale. Bravo Sir, bravo.

You have a lot of time. Lego, caffeine, and take-out filled time. Well spent time. Spent on this, massive, gigantic, colossal, prodigious, enormous, gargantuan ship of doom!! This Phoenix Class colony ship is kicking your butt isn't it? At first, I was unsure of how you would make the large upside-down antenna part but, if you hang it by strings, oh man I could imagine it crashing into pieces....Anyway, 5/5! ~Stay green my friends

It's a good thing most of your work is in lego, otherwise I would say you were a maniac. Now you're just crazy. In the good way. Keep up the great work. And those brick link orders are probably the equivalent to my whole brick stash. So yea. I will now die due to overexposure to awesome lego building. ~Waff

Gee and I thought I was a masochist for all the self imposed torture I put muyself through with my piddly little builds! Here's one other question ponder once she's finished, what the heck are you going to do with this beast once it's finished?

You know what people like you need when they make things like this? You need a save button. That way, if you screw something up, you can just save it and open the previous file. And then work from there. And if it gets destroyed somehow, (Cats for example, love to /chew/ on LEGOs, and they tend to knock things over... A LOT!), you can just open up the file again, and pretend it never happened. Too bad life doesn't have those types of buttons :S

Wow, TMI. Anyways... your attention to detail here is somewhat frightening. Your amount of funding is also frightening. The size is frightening... it's scarily big, and shockingly good. I'm not really a fan of HALO MOCs, but when you do something this stunning with LEGOs, I can definitely ignore that. Wow, 5/5.
