The Den

Here is my LEGO den, my Fortress of Solitude, if you will. As you can see, it looks as if a tornado blew through it. I recently acquired a large tub of LEGO and, due to work, only get in sporadic sorting time. Plus, there are so many new pieces to my collection that I get distracted with build ideas and setting aside parts for current projects...

This is my make-shift/ghetto photography station. Two dinner trays, white fabric backdrop, styrofoam frame-in. Can you spot all three UV lights? Ooh, look, yellow!

The shelves. These used to house all my Star Wars sets, before I discovered The Pages and tore them all down for parts. It is now the home of my containers. Usually. As you can see, it looks a little bare...

What IS up there. Left tub has ALL my classic gray, except what little hasn't been sorted from the new tub and what's in a bead container. Same for the tan. Yellow (how'd that get up there?), blue and red have a bunch more that needs sorting, but we'll get back to that later.

Classic dark gray. That is a pillowcase holding my unsorted, little pieces, as I do not have a bead container for them yet. How ghetto is that, man?

AT-AT legs and Hyper-ring, the last remnants of my SW stuff, and my MOC Athalon Crab-Mech. The Crab Mech is the only old MOC still intact. I'm keeping him around for that day when I get back to doing some Atlantis stuff, if that ever happens...

Speaking of Atlantis, my sub that I had 3/4 built before the MOC Athalon, only to be raped and pillaged for parts. Not to fear, the acquisition of so many new black pieces and the fact that I loved the design I had going, guarantees that it WILL be revisited. Whether it remains a sub or becomes a spaceship is yet to be determined...

The bead containers. One for every basic color, tiles, technic pins, wheels, etc. 20 compartments in most, a few are 17 and one is 8. I use them for all small and specialty pieces. The great thing about this is their portability, as I often build in the living room or even my bedroom, using my portable table. More on that later.

My Clonies and some Stormies. A Tauntaun, a Dewback and whatever the hell that stupid lizard thing is called. Jabba is back there too, but the fat ass lizard is blocking him.

My Confederate army; far cry from 6200. My Castle folk; Eggy would probably laugh until he cried...

Baseplates. Three green 32x32, one blue 32x32, one green 16x32, one green 16x16 with driveway pattern.

Instruction booklets. I sure wish I had them all, but I lost quite a few over the years.

My not-so-portable table. Really it's just a giant 'catch-all' for misc. pieces I can't decide what to do with. Rarely is it clean enough to actually BUILD on.

Hey, look, it's the Mech that I've been tinkering with for months now. Someday I might actually be happy enough with it to post.

Some more stuff underneath. All my lime and orange, all my green except for what's in a bead container, my animals. 5 horses, 2 octopi, 2 piggies, 4 dogs (3brown, 1 dark blay) handful of scorpions and spiders.

The portable table. As I mentioned, I often like to build or sort in other areas of the house and this is what I use. This way I can be in the same room with my wife and she can feel like she's not ignored. However, having a giant tub that you're constantly sifting through will get a shoe or some blunt object thrown at you. Just a little tip from Uncle Hansi...

The Tub. Back when my SW stuff was up, all of my extra parts, in containers, would fit in here. It might be safe to say that my collection has tripled over the last year, possibly more. DON'T TELL MY WIFE!!!

The tub full of LEGO I purchased, the remnants. It was FULL, now down to just some misc. stuff and partly chewed pieces. Not just teeth marks, mind you, but CHEWED! And NOT by an animal. A little part of me died each time I found one...

Just for Yuri, Bionicle! Until I purchased the tub, I had less than a dozen Bionicle parts. Some great pieces that I can't wait to toy around with.

My unsorted red and blue from the tub. Probably increased my collection by 50% or more in each of those colors. Score!

All of my white. This is probably about two of Nannan's multiple piles of white that he posted on Flickr and easily my second largest amount of one color.

My largest quantity of one color: black. I LOVE black.

More black.

The one color that I have two bead containers for and could use a third. These are usually PACKED, which tells me I have some sorting to do...

Back to parts. All my brown.

All my greenery. Not a lot there, making it hard to diversify the shrubbery. I have some more flower stems coming, but only about a dozen...

Hinges

Technics pieces and unsorted pins.

Wheels and other car parts. The orange Mars Mission stuff is newly acquired and begging to have something built around them.

Most of my beautiful trans pieces. Ain't they purty?

Ahhh, my favorite, my minifig collection. In the middle is the container with the gang.

My Star Wars figs. Except for the Clonies, Stormies and droids still on the shelf.

My second favorite, fig accessories. This is what playtime is all about!

The two books that I own. I bought the Star Wars book for the Luke fig through Barnes&Noble online for $12.99 with free shipping. How'd that happen? The sticker book was given to me by a co-worker. It's pretty cool and something I would never have bought myself.
Fourth Dimension Commentary: Well, that's it folks, at least those of you who stuck in there this long. With my one year around the corner, I figured it was time to do SOME kind of documentation on the status of my collection and give myself something to refer back to in a year and see where I'm at. To say that my collection has tripled or more since joining MOC Pages is no joke, it really launched me head first into this magnificent hobby! Man I love this place! Keep on brickin' on!~H

Dude, i have so much more sortign to do >_< If I sorted I would add another third to my collection, or more. My word, I absolutly HATE sorting, ALthough, doesnt it make you feel all cheery after 2-5 days of sorting, your all done, and WHAMO you have ALLLL these pieces to build with (: Oh I love that, i love how you have the same amount off yellow in THE SAME EXACT container as me, ahahhaha.
Depends on which container of yellow you're referring to; there were two, three counting the bead container:) Amazing that this was only two months ago...I now have nearly twice that amount of yellow, along with a plethora of new goodies that I picked up at yard sales. Throw in the new Star Wars sets I bought and...it's been a good summer. Now I'm waiting, impatiently, for the series 2 mini-figs. ~H |

Hey Hans, if you are curious about a somewhat- close guess to your collection count...(instruction booklets are useful for a bad memory :P).
Hey, my memory is just fine! What were we talking about? Oh yeah, piece count. I really have no desire to know how many pieces I have overall, nor the time. Between sorting, photographing and keeping up with MOCpages, when does a guy have time to actually BUILD anything? Besides, putting a number on it just gives my wife ammunition...and my memory is just fine.~H |

Oh I feel SOOOO much better now having seen that. So I'm NOT the only one who doesn't keep my collection in tip top shape at all times. My Godzilla ruins are pitiful with only partly sorted colours and a few big boxes that I dive right into and swim around in for about 3 hours every time I need a particular piece and emerge out of breath and triumphant when I actually locate it. Oh, and my lego table hasn't been clear enough to build on in about 3 months, so I just been using a piece of cardboard on the floor! Great post! You have a great collection. |

Nice, I've always wanted to throw a grenade in my collection and see how the room looked afterward. Kidding aside, you have some nice stuff to work with and I am really jealous of the amount of space your family lets you have. The pillowcase full of small parts was my favorite. What treasures are inside, I wonder?
Grenades are always fun. The pillowcase...holds nothing more than unsorted dark gray, but I like your thinking. As for the space, I DO consider myself lucky to have so much of it. With our oldest daughter out of the house, I finally got somewhere to display my stuff and get away at the same time! I also have a TV and DVD in there, so I can watch/listen to sports or a favorite movie while I build. Like I said, Fortress of Solitude.~H |

Dare I ask: would this be the 'clean' state of the den? :D
Absolutely not. This post started because I was taking some 'before and after' pics in regards to the tub that I purchased and it turned into this. Usually I am VERY organized, to the point of being OCD, so it drives me a little crazy. The room is mostly picked up already, that was just the aftermath of a sorting session I had to stop in the middle of. I will have a future post when I get some more containers and have it properly presented, but this was a fun way to introduce people to my Fortress.~H |

sorting is good, but I understand the mess becoming overwhelming. I have a small 5x2 foot desk in the coroner of may basement that is my 'lego table'. But that hardly means the floor ain't fair game. :P My clutter ends up everywhere, in a disastrous hodgepodge of bins burying other bins. It is still much easier to find stuff now than the hours of digging through the black-hole I call a lego bin.
Dare I ask: would this be the 'clean' state of the den? :D |

Hey Hans, if you are curious about a somewhat- close guess to your collection count, there is this cool site: http://www.brickset.com/. You just make a quick account and browse the sets you have (instruction booklets are useful for a bad memory :P). Then you just check those sets and the site counts up the pieces and minifigs for you. It's a little time-consuming, but A LOT quicker than counting. |
