Blown Away Guy
In which our hero hears nothing but "Ride of the Valkyries" for hours straight.
About this creation
The guy in the Maxell ad campaign from a magical time known as the 80s.

Originally, this was going to be the project I bring to Brickworld, but the more I thought about it the more I realized just how impossible that would be. First, I'm flying there and I'm aiming for zero carry-ons besides a backpack; I pack light and know the way of the hobo so that's no sweat. But I wouldn't be able to build this in such a way that it would survive the trip. Second, I decided I know nothing of sculpture. I barely made it through that head, and that was only because I had Sean Kenney's work as a guide (credit for the head design goes squarely to him, by the way). Building an actual torso was, for lack of a dirtier phrase, not happening.

So it won't be coming to Chicago. A few smaller projects will likely make the trip in its place. Need to save room for swag, anyway.

The color version:

Work-in-progress shot. The head was my top priority, as it always is.

See? No body. Just enough to make seen what needs to be seen.
Yes, that is a shot glass balancing the weight of the leg.

Classic. Nothing less. I believe you've captured the visual sense correctly here. I agree that the "body-less" approach you used gives the piece the right perspective; this piece seems to be more about the iconography of the subject than the make-up of the build itself, anyway. Having said, I still think you could do a more 3-D rendition of it if you felt so inclined, and would look forward to seeing it when you're done. Kudos. - Huss Q.

YES! A very iconic image from the 80's (the time of my youth. Awwww.) Masterfully done. I love the way you "cheated" by not building the body. People only see what you let them see in photography and film, anyway...

Alex is almost too young to know what CDs are, much less tapes. Look, in the last picture he's blasting the guy with some sort of futuristic brain melting device like Darth Vader from the planet Vulcan used on George McFly to get him to ask Lorraine to the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance! No, wait, that was a Walkman with a Van Halen tape...

A good 80's comic style has been used to great effect here. Fantastic.

Holy crud! That is really great work. I recall that magical time and that ad. Very nice Sir! (See kids, before MP3's and CD's we had cassette tapes, back in the dark ages, before electric lights!)

Heh. I was just staring at a disk jewel-case that had the 'Blown Away Guy' picture-thingy on it. I didn't even notice I was looking at the same thing, except in LEGO(R) bricks, until I skimmed the whole post a second time. Where's my coffee mug?
