Peril
Or Apocalego 5
About this creation
Here it is, the next installment of the Apocalego series:

Well we got away from the zombies, but found ourselves in almost greater danger.

We were walking along and heard gunshots. We tried to steer away, but somehow got caught in the middle of a gang fight.
I remembered then. There weren’t any zombies in this area of the city; the gangs owned it.

We ran trying not to get hit in the crossfire. We heard someone from the left side of the road shout: “Black sleeves! He’s with them!”. I knew they were either talking about Austin or Jack, And I was willing to bet it was Austin.

I heard a shout coming from right side of the road: “Over here!” We skidded to a halt, and ran through a cleared area in the rubble. There was a dead body to the left of the “door”.

“Stay down!” the same voice called. We dropped to the ground, and waited for further instructions.
I started having second thoughts after that. Our running to the cover was mostly instinctual, I hadn’t even thought about who was calling to us.

When the voice told us it was clear to stand up, if we stayed behind cover, we saw who had been talking to us. It was a man who I would estimate to be in his mid-twenties. He had shoulder-length light brown hair, and wore a tan vest with a black shirt underneath.

He said his name was Elliot, and he was a member of the gang “The Shadows”. They all wore black sleeves as a gang sign, which is why the opposing side attacked us after seeing Austin’s black shirt.

He told us how there were skirmishes-and full blown battles-between his gang and “The Bashers” all over gang populated areas of the city.

He could get us out of the area, if we helped him defeat the last few people in the building across from us. I consulted the others and we decided it would probably be the best decision. After all we didn’t know what these people would do to us if we refused.

I told him we would help him, on the condition he and his gang help us protect Austin. He agreed.

We prepared to rush the building on the count of three. We tensed waiting for the signal.

As soon as Elliot’s tongue spat out the word “three“, we were off, running like professional joggers.

We shot the last two remaining men at the hole they were looking out of.

We clambered inside, and saw a man who had lost his hand to a bullet. He gasped through clenched teeth: “Spare…me….Please…”.

Elliot shot him in the chest, ending his misery, not thinking twice about his actions.

I stared at the dead mans body in shock. I sputtered “Why…Why did…”. Elliot asked me if I had something to say. I shook my head.

We found the stairs to the next level. We disposed of any opposition we met.

We finally got to the roof. There we found a man with a LMG. He fired at us, catching one man in the leg. He went down without a noise, save for a gasp of shock and pain.

Me and John shot at the same time, blowing a hole through the man’s chest. He tripped over some sandbags, and fell to the hard pavement below.

“That’s the last of ‘em.” called Elliot, As he bandaged his hit teammates leg. The other man who wasn’t injured, gathered up the sandbags, and brought an injured sniper inside, so they could interrogate him.
I breathed a sigh of relief. I had had enough killing for one day. Humans are different from zombies. For one thing, zombies are already dead. For another you don’t see the light leave their eyes.

When we got back down to street level, Elliot told us to follow him.

We got out of the area without incident, but suddenly Elliot started looking uneasy…

He asked us in a whisper: “Can I come with you?” When I asked him why, he said, “I never wanted to be in a gang. They blackmailed me into it. They told me I had to be in the group, or they’d shoot me. What would you do?”

I thought about his plight. I thought how I would feel if I was blackmailed into killing people. I had seen how Elliot shot that helpless man, and had been repulsed. But I realized he did it so HE wouldn’t be killed.

And I agreed to let him come with us.

Well that's that, and I have Apocalego 5 out of the way (Finally). I should have some other stuff up soon, and expect a contest.

Just wanted to show off some detail that didn't make it into the comic. This is a broken filing cabinet on the second floor. Note the letter, and manila folders.

Until next time...
