This is my entry for the classic mecha section of the 2010 mech contest. I tried to be a bit creative with this one, going for a mecha that looked like a wolf.
About this creation
The Fen Wolf is the Strike Mech of choice for the commander of the Shadow Wolf mercenary squadrons on the moons of Porunn V. He specially designed this mech so that it would have a second A.I. system built in to act as a secondary neural pilot, or if the situation calls for it even be able to take over its own direct pilot functions so that it could either rescue its pilot, or save him from being transferred or captured if he is taken from his mech. This particular model is also unusual in that the lower leg armor and feet have mostly been removed in order to make it much faster, as well as capable of jumping higher and further then any other wolf mech.
We'll start off the pics with a shot of one of the sides of the mech:
And now of the front:
The right side:
The rear of the mech:
a close up of the jaw, I made it able to open as a slight intimidation tactic, and also because it looks amazing. Plus unknown to most enemies, the teeth are bladed so it can tear through armor.
A minifig size comparison to give an idea of the scale of it.
Now for some details about the equipment of this beauty:
Armor: The Fen Wolf is equipped with heavy duty Tiridium Alloy armor reinforced underneath with titanium plating.
Armament: Its armament on its main cannon is two light artillery guns on the outside, and on the inner rack two large laser cannons, able to be pointed down for close combat at need, the turret can also spin 360 degrees. The rear pod contains small nuclear warheads mounted onto LRM missiles to take out sturdier targets, and the wolf also has the close combat ability of its teeth and claws.
Other equipment: It has a small storage area in the center, capable of holding a person if need be, but usually housing the pilots equipment and the secondary generator for the mechs power functions. Also the ears conceal communications arrays.
I hope you all enjoy this Mech, It took me around 6 hours to build entirely. I'm just entering it into classic mecha because I have no true idea of its piece count but I know its probably not over 600.

The head of this mech is great, the only thing I can find that needs work would be the legs, but perhaps you ran out of parts, which is usually what stalls my creations.
I did run out of pieces initially, but after I found more green to use I took a glance at it and really liked how it looked, so I integrated it into my story. I suppose I could add more plating though:P Glad you like it! |

Definitely an unorthodox design that has potential. I'd say you should go for a version two to see what upgrades you can make. Also you might want to try a different color scheme. I can't help but think of a cooshee (elven dog) from the old Dungeons and Dragons game. If you have the parts, I would try a grey/black pattern with maybe a splash of green for combat highlights. |

I was going to go for a version two eventually when I get more pieces, but right now I'm trying to experiment with battletech:) As for the main reason he is green, I thought it would add a cool earthy feel rather then just direct combat, maybe a splash of old to the new, I wanted a bit more black on him, but he just.....turned green while I was building I suppose:P Also, thanks for the thoughts on it, criticism and ideas are always welcome! |

Nice work on this. I like all the details and features. I especially like that you managed to fit a minifig inside. Great job!
Thanks! I'm glad that this mech is such a hit, when I built it I hardly foresaw it becoming my most popular creation! (And believe it or not, that minifig canopy was a dickens to design). |

that looks very, very awesome! I consider building animal-like mechs a big challenge! Almost all parts are great, but I like especially the head. Good work!
Thanks so much! I must admit the head is my favorite part as well, it came out perfectly and communicated a huge part of the mechs personality:D |

Score of 3, its a great concept, but the legs are a little underdeveloped compared to the body, great job though!
that IS explained though, but ah well:P Thanks so much for the 3! I'm pleased that this did so well! |

3 points from me. I like how the head was designed and the dark green was an interesting color choice. I felt that the legs and torso were underdeveloped though, and maybe a consistent color scheme would have worked better on the legs. Still, I like mechs that resemble animals and I can see that you did put effort and thought into this.
thank you for your rating. I too would have enjoyed those areas to be more developed, and perhaps even more color coated, but I resolved not to buy any more bricks as of yet, so I'm perfectly happy with a 3. thanks so much! |

Thanks so much for all you ratings, and heck, didn't think I'd do that good with this^^" The main reason for no communications antenna is in most games I play if I see an antenna shoot it off so they can't tell on me:P And honestly I didn't buy ANY pieces from bricklink for this so I didn't evolve the body or legs as far as normal, so overall I'm thrilled by your ratings, thank you all so much! |

Also, I think at the beginning of the competition, I'll give a little more feedback on top of my rating, so here goes: Your write up was great, and I appreciate the good script, appropriate grammar, proper spelling, etc. Some things that could have made it a five: you mention the ears hide communication equipment. Let's see some antennae sticking up out of there! A little more refinement on the body and legs also could have yielded a five. BOTTOM LINE: exactly what I wanted to see: the underdogs are already bringing their A-game |

wow, I'm blind. Not only did you mention it was in "classic" category at the beginning, but also at the end. Sorry about that, mate. I read fast! Anywho, Let's get on with it. Honestly, I was struggling here with either a 3 or a 4. Ultimately, because you show some great parts usage, and this is your first post (and you had the ballz to be the first entry) I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and call this a solid 4 POINTS. i don't feel like doing halves yet. Its unique, powerful, proportionately excellent, and I like puppies. Great work. I will likely judge everyone's first entry with a bit of slack, but as we go on, I'll become a bit more strict as I hope to see improvement |
|

It is Classic Mecha, he states that at the begining. I grant you a 3. Good idea with the wolf. |

no way, i seriously get to be the FIRST judge to post on the FIRST creation of the contest? Shizaaamm! Alright, enough small talk, now to the score. I give a final score of....dramatic pause..... a final score of.....commercial break (Tired of paying too much for conventional oil-based fuels? Convert your mech and anti-mecha to patented Clone-Fuel TODAY!)....welcome back, and the final score is..... on hold until you designate which category this is an entry for. |
