Once again, I present a world first - a functioning Porsche 917K! MOC includes accurate scale and drivetrain layout, flat 12 engine, working gearbox behind the rear axle, full independent suspension, opening doors/ engine cover, and connected steering.
About this creation
The 1970 Porsche 917K - in this case, car #23 -

- was commissioned by a gentleman from spain. It was built from the parts of 8195 and 8297 - what I consider to be the two 'universal car' sets which when combined allow you enough parts to build just about any car. I'm pretty sure this is also the first time this car has been built in large scale Technic:

(original car, from wikimedia commons)

It was tricky to get the shutlines and key contours mated nicely, but I'm pleased with the result. Unlike the 250 GTO the original car does have double wishbones front/rear, so I could keep the standard wishbones. The only odd layout choice is putting the gearbox behind the rear axle, which means the engine has to sit high, and there's very little room to mount the rear suspension and differential transfer gear. I'm still using a 3-speed linear box (though this time with a tight fitting shift gate!) due to space constraints. It's got a new design and much closer gear ratios (0.7, 0.85, and 1 if I remember right) than the 250GTO. No power functions this time at the request of the customer.
Functions:
- Working steering, linked to steering wheel
- Full suspension, same type as the real car - independent double wishbone front/rear, shortened wishbone length and vertical absorber placement to increase suspension stiffness to match real car
- Working flat 12 engine, mid placement
- 3-speed gearbox with shifter mounted behind rear axle, pushrod activated shifter
- Opening engine cover and doors
Constructed from:
- 8145 Ferrari 599, and 8297 Off Roader.
- Yes, the 250GTO still exists complete; the 917K was assembled from sets acquired specifically for this purpose.
Okay, time more photos and details:

Now for some mechanical bits:

Car without doors and engine cover. Note how short the wheelbase really is; this factor contributed to the instability of the first version of the real car before it had its huge wings added.

The underside. Although there are two pneumatic springs there, they're non functional and just serve as decorative mufflers. I wanted to make the engine cover self-opening, but it turned out to be impossible as there was no room to mount the required pushrods and still keep the whole thing looking convincing - especially from the side profile.

The engine has a braced structure around the outside to replicate the tubular chassis structure of the original car. It was a bit of a pain to make it look convincing, but I think it turned out fine.

Cockpit

Cockpit II, doors and engine cover removed

Gearshift gate

Closeup of the rear suspension/engine/gearbox; note tubular brace structure also used for gearbox mount and casing :)

Engine cover
A note on photography - the majority of the images were shot with a Nikon D700 and remote speedlights, but a Ricoh GR-Digital III was used for the wide and close shots.
Thanks for looking and don't forget to add a fave if you like it! I do respond to all comments if I can.

Thanks Ben. Sorry, nope - the model went to the client already. Best description I can give you is that there's a pushrod that runs parallel to and over the top of the flat-12 engine, which then drops down into the cockpit. It doesn't shift that precisely because of flex in the rod, but it does the job.

Amazing model. Do you have any additional pics of how you set up the shifter linkage back to the transmission and transaxle? I'm trying to figure out how to set up a similar configuration for a Ferrari 312b and I want to put the transmission at the back of the car rather than under the shifter.

Absolutely stunning Ming. I've always loved the look of the 917. It's the only Lego version I've seen and you've certainly done it justice!
You've motivated me to give it a go, so I'm going to try and build it myself over the Christmas period (fingers crossed)
I love your photography by the way. I'm also a Nikon shooter (a D300 at the moment) I'm still finding my feet but hope to get some more pictures under my belt in 2011

I didn't take it apart. It was made for a client. I just don't have the car anymore. Independent parts are generally difficult to make without seeing exactly how it's going to fit with the rest of the car. |

Quoting Anthony Dunne Simply amazing! This car is just awesome- very recognizable! The cars functional are great- like the engine, the steering, gearbox, and the opening features are just amazing! I am just wondering- how much would it cost to have one of these made? First I am guessing the customer purchases the two sets, and then mail them off to you, and then you charge accordingly to man hours? Beautiful car, once again! Keep building! -Anthony Dunne
