About this creation

Larnach Castle is an imposing mansion on the ridge of the Otago Peninsula within the limits of the city of Dunedin, New Zealand. It is one of only a few houses of this scale in New Zealand.

It was built between 1873 and 1887 as the residence of William Larnach, a prominent entrepreneur and politician in colonial New Zealand. Much of the construction was carried out under the guidance of the architect R.A. Lawson, who was also responsible for many other buildings in Dunedin. The finished house contained 43 rooms and a ballroom, and required a staff of 46 servants.

The building, which Larnach himself simply called "The Camp," did not ensure his happiness. After a series of personal and financial setbacks he committed suicide in New Zealand's Parliament Buildings in October 1898.

After many years in which the place fell into disrepair, it was bought by Barry and Margaret Barker in 1967, and has been restored. It affords spectacular views of the Otago Peninsula and Harbour and is 10 kilometres by road from the city centre.

The house and its grounds are regularly open to the public who hear tales of the ghostly happenings while on tour of the rooms.

Larnach's Castle is famed for its ghosts. Kate Larnach, the patriarch's favourite daughter, supposedly haunts the ballroom which was reputedly built for her as a gift for her 21st birthday - she died of typhoid fever five years later.
Larnach's first wife Eliza Jane died of apoplexy in the South Bedroom - it's said that her "presence" can sometimes be felt in that room's doorway.
After Eliza's death, Larnach married his wife's sister Mary Alleyne - who five years later also died suddenly, of blood poisoning.
Larnach's third wife Constance was 21 years younger than the 56-year-old William, and scandal erupted when she was accused of having an affair with Larnach's son Donald - who later killed himself in a Dunedin hotel.
Larnach's own suicide came when he faced financial ruin after the collapse
of the Colonial Bank.

Or perhaps these eerie tales came from the castle's days as a hospital for the mentally ill, one of its many uses for many owners over the years.

Larnach Castle in real life.

Not the "conventional" European castle, but majestic nonetheless! In fact, it goes back to the uniqueness of your MOCs! Impressive build!

The build itself is great of course, but I actually found myself staring at the landscape pic more. I know New Zealand and Aussie are two different countries, so please don't take this the wrong way, but I've said it before (ask Ocean) if I could live anywhere aside from the States, it would be down under. I find that area of the world to be just beautiful beyond compare. And yes... I have been "there" (Aussie, not NZ. sorry). Again, nice work on the castle. Gonna have to go back and check it out again! ~ Chris.

It is a lovely job, and it would certainly seem to replicate the original. It doesn't have the same level of detail as some of the other mocs in this category, and such I can only give four (4) points. Lee.

It's very nice, but I had a lot of trouble with the scale. The bottom half works well, but the top half suffers from the lack of detail. I wish you had done more of the alternating bley/dark bley plates like you did in the center section on the upper portions. 4 points.

Quoting Josh B. Wow, this is really good! I'm jealous of your entry, and I can smell the 5's now! Anyways, the real building looks kinda brown to me, but you still made it extremely similar. And I agree with the last pic :)
Thanks! I saw this for real only once about 15 years ago and can't remember its true colour, but I only have a small handfull of brown bricks and a ton of grey so I had to improvise. I've never tackled anything this big in a non minifig scale so I'm quite pleased with how it turned out... although it is the 4th build I did for this category! You don't wanna see the first 3!
