011 - Hourglass
Replica of an hourglass
About this creation
This model is the answer to a challenge that I posed to my oldest daughter, who is nine years old, to build an hourglass from this photograph . I wanted to give her a project that I knew would cause her to really have to think and work things out. This project did just that. This project presented many difficulties: An hourglass is typically full of curves; there is transparency to contend with; they deal with time; there is apparent symmetry; it has to work structurally; it has to work visually; it must be recognizable.

The project took her a week to complete. She took a day off here and there. She had to work hard to solve the problems that this project presented to her. When she was finished, she was thrilled with her accomplishment, and I was very proud of it and her as well.

There are three "feet" below the base of the hourglass, underneath each of the uprights, that support the entire piece.

It has a very good look to it. Reminds me of the power core or energy beam from a covenent ship from Halo.

I was wondering if it would be possible to use this design on NXTLog. I would like to use it as a cover image for the main project folder. But the image may be used in another area. It is also possible that the image will not be used. PS: this board should include I love it :) Fantastic work! Great creative problem solving and nice use of available bricks! Thanks for your time. Please let me know asap.

What a masterpiece! Excellent use of basic elements to create such a difficult shape. But what is even more amazing is the way you translated the time aspect. The use of the different coloured transparent bricks, really makes this hourglass look in motion. A true work of art.

Wow, definitely keep this one together. Love the way she made it look like sand was dropping down in the bottom.

After looking through your daughter's models, her progress has become quite apparent. This is a great looking model, especially considering that it's made out of mostly basic pieces. Well done.
