mini-fig scale model of this famed Skunkworks reconnaissance aircraft
About this creation
I started work on this minifig scale model in October 2001 shortly after completing the F-117A stealth fighter. I got busy building skyscrapers and train stuff and the half-finished model languished around for for more than a year. Finally in May 2003 I went back and completed it. The total length is around 105 studs.

I struggled with trying to come up with a design to mimic the clean complex curves of the Blackbird's nose, and to be honest I never did find a satisfactory solution. The rest of the build was pretty straight forward. However the narrow fuselage had to be reinforced in the middle to resist the bending moments from the heavy rearward engines. The retractable rear landing gear only feature two wheels per axle rather than the actual plane's three due to some tight packaging issues in the fuselage.

Quoting Marty Fields Impressive in both scale and accuracy. I think the length issue that was raised was probably a result of the camera angle used in some shots.
I seem to think I used a scale drawing when I built it, but who knows? That was seven years ago, I hardly remember even building it!

Great, but definitely not too long. I've walked alongside a real one and they are that long. However, this does not affect the look of the MOC. Good job.

Great Job. Best One I've Seen. I am working on my own model of the blackbird on LDD that is almost to scale but LDD has trouble with such a large model.

this is really good aircraft, one of the best i have seen. I am noticing that your fuselage is a little long, u might want 2 look up so pics of top and compare the length of the engines and the length of the aircraft
