"Big Beautiful Doll" flown by Col. John Landers of the 78th Fighter Group for the USAAF during WWII.
About this creation
I thought I would try my hand at World War Two aircraft for a change. Of course I had to go with the P-51D, hands down the most famous American Fighter of the war. Guess I should also throw this disclaimer in: this is not supposed to be as accurate as my other aircraft. It's sorta more of a fun, LEGO® type set... so accuracy was sacrifced to get a workable model that captured the essence of a P-51D. For a little challenge, I thought a famous P-51D paint scheme would be a nice touch too. Although please forgive me, yes the rudder should be all black, sadly I could not find one particular piece, and after about 8 hours of searching, I decided it would be OK if I compromised and made the whole thing grey. Hope you enjoy
Reason for making a fun LEGO® version: now I can go shoot down that LEGO® Me-109!

Very nice Mini-fig scale P-51. Of course, it was the British Merlin engine that made the P-51 such a great fighter! |

Hey Scott:),
This is a great model. One can see you had a lot of fun building it. The color scheme with the black and white parts is a definite eye-catcher and makes up for a little less accuracy as you pointed out yourself. The solution for the cockpit works well - better than I thought it could with those piesces. As you might know, I care a lot about realism and functionality - a certain compromise between the two actually is my favorite. Cause being able to really play with a model matters to me. Speaking of which: your landing gear is great. Though I want to ask: does the wheel in the back turn? Some working control surfaces on the wings and tail would be great - maybe for your next model?! Achieving great accuracy for models of real aircraft is hard. Usually, compromises on functionality and/or playability have to be made, as well as compromises on the design if one doesnīt own the right pieces. That is why I never wanted to build a real model, but make up my own ficticious designs rather: because I can alter the outcome by using different pieces, changing the shape, etc., without having to stick to the shape of a particular real model. In addition to that, your own creativity and imagination can be unfolded even more... But oh well, thatīs just me blabbering... :) Anyways, a great model! Keep it up, Steffen |

Nice! Yeah, the gear is a little off as far as the height and wheels go. The rest is good! |

The proportions are a little bit strange. What scale do you build? It is definetly no minifig scale. According to the length of your plane it is around 1:30 but for the width it is 1:35. The hight is difficult to determine by looking at the pics but it could fit in minifig scale (1:48).
The wings are a little bit to thick and some photos are blurred.
So thats for the critics :-)
Overall it is a really well looking plane and I think it is worth 4/5. I know how difficult it is to build nearly exact models.
I hope I did not offend you ;-) |

wow I read the comment below and it actuall is the "Big Beautiful Doll"! I read a little about that airplane. But the moc, it's simple, yet complicated but the design is fantastic. It's hard to make a good lego airplane, usally I succeed in making a good (not st00pied looking) airplane about 1/4 of the time! |

"Big Beautiful Doll"! I based my republic gunship on this plane. Building WWII planes is always hard, but you captured the shape very well. Nicely done. |

not very accurate as a model but fun and creative; a P-51D Crimson Skies like. I like the way you build the landing gear and the canopy. |
