Black Sun Empire's BY series Cargo Liner.
About this creation
Hi,
Last model for the moment; the christmas holidays were fun but I've got to go back to my tiny broom-cupboard of a university room in a few days so no more lego until the summer holidays... :(
Scroll down for lots of photos at the end, those who want to skip reading the text.
Also, I'm writing this with my cat (Vocal Cat, the one who "test drove" the lego lambo) sat purring away on my lap. I don't know what she's eaten, but her breath is horrible.
Yes, it's Black Sun Empire. And yes, it's white. There's a good reason for that. First off,if every faction was uniquely one colour, we'd run out of colours quite quickly and the fleets would look quite boring and monotonous. It's not because they're called black that all their ships have to be black; it's the black *sun* ... oh, whatever...
Black Sun Empire isn't a simple military faction; it's a powerful empire in its own right. They work on many fronts. So far, yes, I've only made combat oriented vehicles and ships and so decided to make a more 'neutral' one now.
The Black Sun Empire uses colours to code for ships with different functions - it's combat vehicles and warships are black; many non-combat ships are white - such as exploration operations and cargo hauling. Income is income; and like anybody, the BSE needs to make money to fund its expansion. Cargo hauling is one such way, and a good one at that.
This is the BY-series freighter, more commonly called the 'Cargo Liner' (though 'liner' might make it sound a lot more luxurious than the simple freighter that it is). Another ship based off of one of my little brother's designs, we decided to make a much bigger, better version together. You can see the inspiration here if you're interested : www.mocpages.com/moc.php/174603.
A simple design, long and space efficient on the inside. Remember, this is a freighter, not a fighter; practicality comes before looks with this type of ship.
To make up for the weight and sluggish speed; the ship has been stretched out to help air resistance somewhat when flying in atmosphere; and though its powerful engines will get it up to a fair speed in a straight line, it is obviously not the most maneuverable craft around.
The design is simple, but efficient and makes the most of the ship's cargo space - cockpit at the front; large cargo room; two small contained compartments at the rear, and then the array of 6 engine thrusters.
A little tour of the interior, from front to back - not necessarily the order of the photos... just play mix and match again :)
The cockpit : two pilots control this fairly big ship (though small for a freighter); an all-round window gives them great visibility; viewscreens and control panels adorn the cockpit's interior.
The main room : at the front of this, just behind the cockpit, are the inside crane controls on one side and the landing ramp control on the other (as well as the ramp itself of course).
The room is mostly empty, used for nothing more than the cargo being transported. Along the ceiling runs a crane that can move both sideways and backwards and forwards the length of the room (up to where the ramp is); this is used fir the heavy cargo boxes being loaded and unloaded.
At the end of this room is a small console controlling the two panel doors leading to the two rear storage compartments. these contained areas are usually used for goods best left apart from the rest.
The rear compartments : in case you're wondering, the ceilings aren't supposed to be full of holes as they are in real life; but transparisteel, to let in light. Currently one of these is holding confiscated weapons (which will most likely find their way onto the black market; or repaired and modified for use by BSE soldiers); whilst the other is holding prisoner four pirates who thought they could take over the freighter. Little did they know that this was a BSE freighter; and that their crew receive similar, though less intense, combat training to their military troops. Who knows what their fate will be. To avoid treachery or rebellion, BSE virtually never takes on prisoners into their troop rankings, as it's too risky. The prisoners might end up sold as slaves or sent away with nothing. Such punishment is considered worthy by BSE superiors seeing the criminal intentions of the pirates.
The engines : 6 powerful thrusters permit a decent speed, despite rather slow acceleration; though this is to be expected in a heavy freighter.
And there we go :) It might be simple and empty-looking but I quite like how this one turned out (it also turned out to be considerable bigger than originally planned, though that's good)
Sit back, take a look through all the photos; and I hope you like it :)

P.S. If you are looking to buy lego for your creations, I would like to recommend the following Bricklink lego shop ; "About Town, Castle & Train" ( http://www.bricklink.com/store.asp?p=stacey_love )
I personally know the shopholders, and they are very nice, devoted people. They are currently sponsoring 100% of my 1/3 Lamborghini project, providing all of the parts; and have made various other donations to other models I have made.
The store has a wide selection of parts (over 600,000!), at good prices, and offer an exceptional, fast service (no tax or dodgy exchange rates, next day postage, etc). you won't be disappointed !
P.P.S. I'm not getting anything out of 'advertising' for them; they're genuinely a good lego shop who'll really do their best for you :)
P.P.P.S. the cat still has bad breath.
