Thanator(Na'vi name: Palulukan)
inspired by James Cameron's Avatar Movie. This beast moc is my interpretation of the Thanator in the movie.
About this creation

The Thanator (Na'vi name: Palulukan) is a purple colored six limb feline like creature that lives on Pandora. Although many regions of the moon have yet to be explored, xenobiologists currently believe that they may be the apex land predator on Pandora. Reminiscent of a Terran panther, this enormous, powerful animal is unique in its ability to lord over its territory and strike fear into the largest and fiercest of Pandora's creatures. Even the Na'vi, who are renowned for their courage, are shaken by the approach of the creature; it is not celebrated in dance or song.

Its musculature is pronounced and impressive, providing power for protracted runs and leaps. The speed of its neck and jaw strike is as swift as a camera shutter. In addition to conventional ripping and tearing, the thanator can also deliver a lethal blow from its armored tail. The thanator's senses are so highly developed that, depending on atmospheric conditions, it can detect prey up to thirteen kilometers away.

The thanator appears to hunt alone and normally does not stray outside of its territory, which is believed to be roughly 300 square kilometers. It appears to hunt mainly at night, although seems to make an exception if hungry enough.

The Thanator was the creature that caused Jake Sully to meet Neytiri; she saw him run from it and later saved him from the Viperwolves. Neytiri also bonded with a Thanator after her Banshee was killed at the final showdown between the humans and Na'vi.

The thanator has twelve sensory quills, two sprouting from each section of armor plating that encircles the rear of the skull. The function of the quills is poorly understood, but it has been hypothesized that they may be tied to an internal mechanism of prey location. The quills also flare up to warn its prey it is about to attack.

It also has an armored head, a massive distensible armored jaw, and twenty-three centimeter long sharp teeth, along with burnished black skin banded with stripes of yellow and scarlet, ten external sensory quills, the upper lip folds back for maximum tooth extension. It also has armored chitinous plating over dorsal area. The Na'vi that are around 9 to 10 feet tall could ride on the back of one of these beasts, making them approximately 20 feet long.

CREATORS'S COMMENTS:

First of all, if you have not seen the movie Avatar then I advise you to watch it! You won't regret it. The special effects is great! Its unfortunate I wasn't able to watch it in 3D though.

My inspiration for this moc comes from the movie itself

Thanator is probably my second hardest moc to build, second only to KROLL . Total build time was around 15 to 17 hours I think. It is quite a big and heavy moc using a thousand or more "BIONICLE ONLY" parts to build it. To give you a size estimate, it looks bigger than a domestic cat.
moc specs
color: gray, silver
L x W x H : 24 x 12 x 12
weight: 2.6 pounds

Despite its size, there are still some articulation. The mouth, jaw, head, frills, tail, legs can still be move for posing.

I intentionally edited the pictures for this moc to look purple to follow the skin color of the original Thanator from the movie. However, by its own color(silver and gray), it is still very awesome.

If you would like to see the movie scene preview of Avatar where the Thanator appears. play this...

Background music from the THE AVATAR MOVIE composed by James Horner.

Quoting Calum O'Halloran hi loads of! hey harvey, isn't double tape cheating?
Cheating? I don't recall entering Thanator to any contest. Lol. The double tape on the eyes was just to ensure the eyeball don't fall off whenever I move Thanator to another place. It wont fall off even without tape if it remains in place.

Quoting Calum O'Halloran I must say, it is an extremely complex-looking build, but i must ask, don't the zamor spheres in the Thornax Launcher ever fall out? I am talking about the eyes, by the way.
The zamor spheres could fall out except that I have put double tape to it.

Quoting Chris Toa of randomness Nice MOC... However, I'd like to know why you have so much time to do all these amazing MOCs
Actually, I don't have much time. Between work, family, bowling, and other civic duties I do, I spend little time now building bionicles as such I plan only to release once a month except when there is a contest at Bionicle Display group. Somehow, it takes easier now for me to built giant bionicle creations. I guess experience and imaginative creativity combined helps.

Quoting Yuri Fassio Great MOC, great editing, great everything :)
Thanks Yuri. I have always wanted a purple moc. I had made just about all the colors except purple. Because of the inavailability of bionicle purple parts, editing I guess would have been the only option. Thanator gave me the opportunity to turn it to purple. hehe.

Quoting Jay O'Bee Most impressive, but I highly doubt it took "thousands" of pieces to build.
Sorry IT should have read a thousand or close to a thousand pieces. The body of Thanator is not hollow but composed of many interconntected parts to make the structure strong enough to stand. Thanator weighs in heavier than the Skopio VX1 set of around 800 plus parts.
