WIP: Tri Droid
Searching… Seek and Destroy!
About this creation
One day I figured that a brick-build sphere would be perfect for a Tri Droid. And so began the build. I’ve got the design for the sphere from here and with some few modifications I made it studless. It took 216 jumper bricks, some plates and a lot of tiles, all ordered from Bricklink. Then I put the head together like a big puzzle. Next up were the legs. I tried out many versions and ended up with a clean look.
The weird design of the foot was one one of the most challenging parts. In the end I think the leg and foot are oversized.
I’m posting this work-in-progress pictures because I need help from my fellow MOCpagers. I would like to know your opinion of the Tri Droid so far. Now I’ve got the opportunity to make adjustments, so criticism is most welcome!

This is what I’ve build so far. The gun barrels are going to be replaced by technic joiners once I’ve ordered them. The ‘neck’ is just for the show.

As you can see I tried to maintain a clean look. Maybe I’ll throw in some grilled tiles.

Duplicating the black pattern was very puzzling. I think I'll use Ldraw next time...

The sphere consists out of six segments that are connected to a cube inside

It was pretty hard to get the right shape for the 'toes'. Overall, I think the foot ended up to big.

The rotations joint disks are perfect for the job: they can carry a lot of weight without popping in a different angle.

The inside. I used a simple way to build around the rotation joint disks. Connecting the leg to the foot is a whole other story.

Reference pic. There are some different versions of the Tri Droid on the internet, but I use these one mainly.

Don't forget to comment! :)

Quoting droid-hunter commander Its going to be very good, but I think the legs should be longer and the round head should bigger.
I can´t make the head any bigger, I´ve already spend a fortune on the tiles ;). Yeah I can make the legs longer. Thanks for the advice ^^.

Hey Master. No, unfortunately I don't. :( I still regret not getting that Turbo Tank set with that torso you showed me. I still remember going to a store and holding it in my hands, but I didn't get it because I wasn't really interested in Legos back then. I'm just hoping they make a set with those Kashyyyk figure torsos some day;)

Quoting Jp ... This is going to be EPIC! I can't wait to see this beautiful mechanical monster completed! There's just one little thing I noticed: aren't the eyes a bit too big?
Thanks! ^^. About the eyes, I didn't notice it until you said it. I didn't want the eyes close to each other so I made them longer to make it look right, but now they are indeed to big. I'm going to search for something slimmer than those trans-orange cones. Thanks for your keen observation!

Quoting Lt. Colonel Ghostman Maybe posting this creation on Ask Keith and ask him for advice on the toes? ~ Ghostman :)
Thanks for your comments ^^. That was the reason I posted this in the first place, but I have to wait till january 1st. Once I've got enough criticism I'll order the pieces and finish it.

Wow, its looking good so far! Even though its not completed yet, it still looks amazing. I can't really give you any good criticism for the toes, since I'm not really a great builder as you ;) The thing I'm really amazed is the interior of the head and the inside of the legs. Looking forward to seeing it done! ~ Ghostman :)

Thanks ^^. I think it will be slightly too big, but I'm more concerned if the proportions are right.

this is really going to be great, it already looks magnificent and the technic you used for the head is really interesting, also I think you made the foot in a perfect scale so I suggest you leave it the way it is, great job can't wait to see it finished ;)

Quoting Giovanni Seynhaeve You're going good, no need to doubt the toes. The way I see it in the reference pic: the toes are half as big as the sphere. You've got the scale right. I wonder how you're going to construct the first section of the legs?
Thanks for your feedback! About the first section of the legs, I haven't figured that out yet. The legs gets thinner at the joint, so that's going to be tricky. ~M
